Ah I see, just thought you might have some super-clocked 486 or something, that would have been kinda cool

Ah I see, just thought you might have some super-clocked 486 or something, that would have been kinda cool
that would be really cool, but parts [high performance ones] especially memory, and locked multi's lead me to think making my phase cooler fit on it was a waste of time :D
PS: 1200 frames so far,[3 days] is this normal for a a64-3200?
lol yeah phase probably overkill on the 486 :D
Which client are you running, the GUI or the console text-only client? Which project # is it? Some projects take a long time, others not so long so I'd need the project number to compare.
well, I just typed a big post, and when I looked at the screen it wasn't there!
I'm on 3044, but it doesn't matter because I thought they were all the same size, and i used the GUI installer, I'm not all that good with software compared to you guys, so I figured I would be less prone to give up!
EDIT: I'm at 1444 now
Work units aren't all the same size, depending on the protein they are crunching they can be pretty small things or these massive jobs.
I've not used the GUI client and unfortunately the console and the GUI don't compare well to each other. The console has 100 frames (comprised of varying amounts of steps), so each frame is 1%. GUI client has a varying number of frames (why, I don't know...).
Actually, the console version just doesn't give you anything nice to look at, but as far as an actual installation goes it's just as easy as the gui and generally has fewer issues than the gui. I'm a firm believer the console version has less overhead and allows the client to utilize your hardware slightly more efficiently. Trust me, when I first started folding years ago, I started with the gui too. Plus you have a good safety net. There are a lot of good people on this team that can help you out if you hit a snag.....Sparky for one is usually on top of stuff. I just pop in from time to time to lend a hand if I can.
Take the plunge....go console!
Oh, I forgot to say "Hi" :welcome:
I'll just wait until I can get my network up, I just have to put in a new card in the other system and get a new router, so it may be awhile [saving money for the router], i'll install with the console on that computer.
There are some setup guides linked in my sig if you want, might help. And don't hesitate to ask any questions :)
i just got a ps3 yesterday (boxing day special w00t) and i've started folding. ive gotten 3 protes done sofar. whats the benfit of joining a team? i'm helping alone just as well as with a team right?
Hi there and welcome. The PS3 is certainly awesome... I have one folding as well.
For the cause of folding there is no difference in folding for yourself or a team, but folding for a team can get you more in the competitive spirit! It is the competition that helps drive a lot of us to fold more, which in turn does more for the cause of course.
If you would like, you can use 36362 to join up with XS. Currently, we are ranked 63rd overall as a team.
I started to folding seriously now.
I have my quad at work and one at home, soon I throw some other machines too.
I'm running the console SMP client.
:welcome: leo_bsb glad to have you here! SMP client is a good choice for sure
hi im running 2x console clients on my E6520 clocked at 3.4ghz
and im getting about 380PPD out of them? is this normal or am i doing somthing wrong? both cores are maxed at 100% , ive only been running it for about 6 hours ?
If you want more points, try out the SMP client. More of a pain to set up (partially since it is in beta still) and you can't set it as a service so you have the annoying button on the taskbar all the time, but it puts those cores through their paces quite well. My Opteron 165 @ 2.8GHz hits about 1100PPD with it, so your CPU should definitely be capable of some heavy hitting
right some good old console hacking and its running on my main vista rig , havent got a PPD yet but il update.
time to get this running on my server box
Thanks for all the help , lets Crunch hard
done :D 1400pd on my main rig and about 980ppd on my server
thanks! thats double what i had before!
Hello guys!
I joined the team, I'll try to contribute as much as I can :)
I'm currently folding on my lil' E2160.
Maybe I'll make a rig that will do only folding, but I'm limited with my budget, so it will probably some K7 Athlon or maybe a Duron, but it will fold 24/7 :)
Thanks Swarm! It's not just the massive crunchers who make a team, it's also the long term contribution of the regular guys that helps us out in catching the teams in front. Welcome Aboard :D :toast:
The top five on the XS have really picked up the pace to boot, Toms is going down in record time.... this is sooooooo nice. :D
Welcome swarm :)
UnG, what is it about Tom's that motivates us so? :)
Hi guys,
Thanks to this forum..... well the P5W DH problems and fixes thread .... It's taught me how to overclock. Thanks to all the info I managed to build my system with 0 problems.
The least I could do was use my rig for folding for Team 36362 as a small thank you... but why stop there, I've also added my bro's PS3, my work comp and my second rig:
1 X Q6600 (Ubuntu)
2 X Pentium 4 (XP)
1 X PS3
and hopefully add my own PS3 next month.
Team 36362 FTW!
;)
Welcome man! :welcome:
Whoa bud, that's a lot of rigs... numbers are flying up the curve for SURE :D :D Ugly definitely has an evil grin on his face. Most importantly, I'm glad you got some good solid info out of the forums. The folks here take their hardware pretty seriously and are a pretty damn knowledgeable group.
What's your folding ID? Welcome to the team!
I am so unhip and lame that I don't really know a thing about Tom's other than that once upon a time they posted hardware reviews that were marginally useful. Mainstream vs. Xtreme, huh? Is there bad blood? I like XS and especially F@H/XS so it's all good. Every team we pass is more glory for the team and more science for all :)
Yeah at the end of the day friendly competition is about the science, The results go to one lab, the project overall is is exciting and interesting in and of itself.
As to Toms > well we don't bash other sites at XS. There's no bad blood, they just have a habit of misguiding the starting out enthusiast in the opinion of some of the savvy computer builders here... After all, when your revenue is derived from advertising, you have to keep the advertisers happy.
just set up the SMP client on my main rig after I reinstalled windows vista as I had driver problems and it took apart my RAID ... but anyways I am all good now and have a dedicated cruncher that I have left on for a long time ~ 20 WUs ~ and will be putting a SMP client on it
Just checked out FAHMON and it is a sweet app!:yepp:
Sounds good goat eater  Watch that wallet, the addiction sometimes can be a little rough on it at times :D
Thanks for the welcome guys! :)
As I promised, I'll set up a dedicated cruncher...It's not much, I came up with a Duron at 850 MHz (will oc it, maybe I'll reach a GHz) and with 128 MB of SDRAM :D Please don't laugh guys :D
Since I am going to high school, I don't have a sallary or a regular income of cash, so this is the best as I can do for now. Also, I'll have the main rig crunching, but it's not always available for crunching 24/7.
I'm wondering, will the Duron even run Folding@home? It doesn't have SSE instructions I think :/
I also promise that the 24/7 crunching rig will be updated, I don't know when, but I'll try to beef up that setup.
Hey swarm! I'm not gonna laugh at all. When I first started crunching it was my main PC then I added my first dedicated cruncher later on - a 750MHz P3. We all start somewhere and everything is welcome :D
The Duron should run it fine, I ran F@H on a duron for a long time myself as well (was cruncher #2 for a bit). Never any trouble crunching. The duron does have SSE, just no higher levels like SSE2 and so forth.
Thanx Sparky!
I see that you guys have even more than one cruncher, usually very fast and formidable machines. So a Duron is a laugh when compared to you guys and to your rigs ;)
The crunching rig will be online in a week or so, because I have to clear some space for it (I don't have any space in my room to put a hard disk drive, not to mention an entire rig :D but all the hardware is here, but it's not yet connected and set up together), install the OS, overclock and run stability tests, and so forth. You know how it goes :D and school is a pain in the neck, so it is slowing me down a bit. :shakes:
Welcome to the team, it's not about the rig, it's putting them to good use is all. I'm folding on some antique hardware here myself until I feel I am knowledgeable enough about the "scene" here again to make some more choices. All are welcome and appreciated.
Again, we all start somewhere. Took me quite a while to work up to where I am now - and then when you think about it a bunch of old s754 and s939 single cores isn't really all that formidable anyway :p: My "army" started with my PC and that P3 750MHz, then it slowly grew to consist of a duron, an athlon t-bird (still has one of those actually), and a couple more P3's.
If you have any questions on anything at all - or just want to throw a few smart remarks at any of us :D - feel free to post up
i have one core going all the time on my q6600 and 3 for all my games that i play through out the day. i also have got my ps3 going but can not figure out how to join the xs team can anyone help me
Hey dafeeessh - you can restart the client with the -configonly flag to set our team number, which is 36362:
> by editing the properties of a shortcut to it
> or you can rerun the setup from the command prompt like so:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y68/jandz/FAHsetup.jpg
Now restart the client in your normal way, and next time a unit completes it will be submitted for XS  :) You might want to look into the windows SMP client, or running a few more vanilla clients - they are pretty good at getting out of the way when a game needs your CPU I find.
OK if I join? Only a P4 but every bit helps I suppose.
I joined the team a while ago. I'm folding 24/7 on an iBook G4 and a Dell Latitude D600 w/ a Pentium M. Is there any way I can make either of them fold faster?
My F@H name is hotwaxisbad
The easiest way provided you haven't already to make them fold faster would be to use the console client instead of the graphical client.
Yep what Voo Doo said :)
:welcome:
Thanks, thats what I was doing.
Just a question, How much does the console client improve performance by compared to the graphical?
The graphical takes some CPU cycles to produce the graphics, so there is a tad bit of a slowdown from that. Also the console allows more than one client to run (if you are on a multi-core setup) and can use some extra configuration flags to "possibly" help boost performance a bit (depends on a lot of variables).
Hey guys,
my 8800 GTS just joined the team :)
Still running WCG on all the other cores though, and I'm afraid that won't change, HCC is my top priority. But since the GPU was sitting there idle all day long, I figured might as well let it crunch.
one 8800GT added
Welcome to you both!!
:welcome:
So good to have you on the team!
:welcome: :toast2::wtf: What happened to ugly n grey?:eh:
one 9600GT on the way :)
username the.illidan
One p4 added to the cause
Will add my new rig as soon as its assembled in a few weeks
Userid = KingOfToasty:up:
:welcome: Kingoftoasty! Glad for you to join us :)
I see Omastar has joined! :)
I have brought 2 new folders to the team, crimson_lily as everyone knows.... and my friend... chronos. He's folding on an old ibook, so its not super fast, but its extra ppd and he gets it done when he can.
I might be able to get another guy I know folding on a quad whenever he upgrades. He doesn't OC, but a 2.4ghz q6600 will still run smp fine, plus he won't ever shut that pc down. That's a good 1700 ppd +.
 Always good to have more people :wtf:
The forum has a reference system for new members but not for new folders, if you think it will be motivating and just a nice feature then propose it to the admins? Hint MM :D
I'm taking the main rig down now, needs allot of dusting off and fixing cooling/wiring. Maybe I will take pics along the way but only if I think it will make me look good
All the people i've gotten to join were on gamespot :( i help out at the hardware forum
Post count 1337!!
Well atleast they join Kingcarcas that's the most import part..
though if we keep this up we're going to be an top 20 team pretty soon, that brings with it greater responcibilities
I just joined the team
I'll be folding with my ps3 and my pc.
Next week, I'm bringing 17K ppd+ to the team. Details when the hardware comes in.
Joined nearly 2 weeks ago as "drvodka"; since I bought a 4850, I thought I'd use it for some good.
Folded 51 WUs, +9200 points for the team.
I also have a C2D, is it advisable to set up a SMP client? Won't the GPU2 client slow down a lot to negate the PPD gain from the SMP client?
:woot::welcome: to all the new members!
Well, that's good to hear, since I'm running vista :D
I'll set SMP up now, it'll be good to have some more PPDs...
Awesome name!:welcome:
Ok. I have a c2d and 8800gts. Which client do I use for my C2d? I was just using the regular 6.2? I think it is. Is there a special client for multiple core processors? I'm folding one instance with my nvidia card can I run the second on my cpu? Yes I am running Vista.
SMP client & GPU client:
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther
Good luck
Sweet! Welcome to the team mackey!
smp fails for me ill enter my logon and password in the thing but then its like FAIL ill retry it now and tell you exactly what it says
edit - It decided to work? lol
If it can't get any work it is because they had a big power outage out there. If it is a client not running issue then post it up and we'll take it from there :)
my client issue fixed itself before it was LYING saying that im wrong about my username and password a few times
now its the power outage failure thing =[
with the SMP client tho does 1 client = running one core?
or does it run whatevers available etc as i want it running off 2 cores, then the gpu off one + gpu then the spare "last" core to browse net msn etc
1 SMP client runs 2 to 4 cores. The newer client though you have to put -smp in the command line to it otherwise it won't run in SMP mode.
It will use all your cores by default, up to 4. If you have one of those sweet 8 core systems, then you'd need to run 2 clients to use all 4 cores.
ahh ok that all makes sense thats cool :D thanks alot :)
anytime
Says Completed 0 out of 5000000 steps.
How long till it completes 1 step? It's been sitting here for a minute or two.
It takes more than a couple minutes. Depending on the project it can take 5, 10, 15, 20 minutes for the step.
:welcome:
how long should it take for a Q6600 at 3GHZ (for now cba to make it 3.6 its too hot lol) ... to make a step? its taking roughly just under 30 mins to make a "2500 out of....." step
so was just wondering if that sounds about right?
James use www.fahmon.net for monitoring ;)
And Sparky, how many is 2 two four?
I finished a few WU with my GPU client but my score did not go up? I left it on all night with about 1hr45min/WU and my score is still the same? How often is it updated?
Stats update every 3 hours, but if you upload like 30 minutes before the update it won't come until the next update. However, as jamesrt2004 said, that power outage I'm sure caused headaches. They did say they stopped the stats updates until they got the rest of the stuff back online to help speed things up.
Nice Evening [ GMT +2 ] to you guys
I'm not new on XS.Org but today I decidet to dedicate my time to Folding [ 18 Hours a day, When I sleep PC sleeps to, that's the rule ]
It's just one PC but better than nothing :hehe:
http://www.ninjutsu.tym.cz/Folder.jpg :p:
Welcome to the team Kondik
It's not important what you bring, it's important that you're here
Hope to see you around, and happy folding :wtf:
Arrrgghhh I made it through here before I actually looked at the image... you CHEAT
You're still welcome though, just try to be honest next time okaaay
:D
Welcome!
Ah :slap:, You see .. I got long wires :p: well it's just one PC, you guys are foldin' with 2 ~ 4 GPU's , 2 ~ 6 PC's therefore
Think of it this way, that PC of yours, is probably going to be awfully close to what I can do with SEVERAL PCs. I run old hardware! Because it's cheap and I don't pay the power bill...yet.
Well, thanks , I'll tweak it a bit and eventually get a 2nd GPU. Now i'm sitting just at 12.000 PPD [ OCed the CPU a bit and got +800PPD ] +/-
As for the Elecricity bill, my flat my rules and since I don't have other Ohm Law Eaters except the PC [ Not a TV nor a Fridge :hehe: ]
And still is around + 5 ~ 9 $ per month so 50 ~ 100 buxx per year IS Worth even if there is the smallest chance to help a single person on this planet. :wtf:
Sparky knows :)
Sorry if my communication skills sometimes seem to be lacking, though I thought in this case it should have been pretty clear I was joking
I think you ment long feet btw, not long wires?
And yeah, not many people here are running those dedicated folding rigs, most ppd still seems to come from the cpu's. Which is abit of a shame for a 3d oriented community like XS but maybe we just got to work on that some more.
Like I said, welcome aboard :wtf:
Edit: damn please, for the sake of the americans, never post your electricity rate here  ( or my sake for that matters ).
I like your attitude  Crunch for life, to me, as you said, if even ONE person benefits from all this, it was worth it
12000PPD  Wow... I'm at 4000PPD when things are going smoothly, right now between moving to school and some system troubles and an OS upgrade my PPD has suffered but it'll bounce back.
How do you get by without a fridge??? I can see how no TV, I don't have one either, but a fridge is like a necessity IMO!
4 kW for $1 :yepp:
Long Wires = Brain related , it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what you thought :D and SparkyJJO figured it out in a matter of seconds. To put it intro a XS.org sentence, I was born with a RISC CPU , I count things fast but sometimes I'm limited with my architecture :p:
Well paid , If my body starts hunger.dll I usually call the 24/7 Delivery service or put on my clothes and a nice good warm lunch / dinner in the city, Fridges are overrated.Quote:
How do you get by without a fridge??? I can see how no TV, I don't have one either, but a fridge is like a necessity IMO!
But how about the cold drinks
I'm pretty attached to my fridge, it's about 20cm away from me now :D
And remind me to never tell you to not do something, unless I want you to do it
You're feeling right at home, I like it :D
Edit:
Just pointing something out to you, I got asperger ( read signature ).
If someone has a wiring problem, it's not you :D
