Damn I did not see this soon enough. The card was probably repairable. When the pot came off (and if installed correctly you can adjust them with the card running all day long) one of the traces in the feedback loop opened up. When the regulator sensed no or extremely low voltage present at the feedback pin (VSENP) the regulator would have down one of two things both of which would have shut the Vcore PS down almost instantly as a protective measure.Quote:

You are not ignorant and there is nothing to be sorry about. All I was saying, admittedly in a rushed and not so tactful manner, is if the trimmer is applied to the card properly using the right materials it won't come loose during normal adjusting with reasonable care.Quote:

ok - well - I was speaking of something I knew little of... but I see your point completely, the biggest danger of adjusting the pot while the card is on is the possibility if weakening, or cracking the solder connections... so attention to proper mounting of said unit should be taken. there's a nice clean section of PCB on the side of the card facing out by the pci-e power socket. Granted the leads have to be longer, but that looks like a prime piece of real estate for the pot.
EDIT: from the images I see that's a favored spot by many. :)
There are good locations right at the mod points for trim pot mounting using "X" style 90 degree bourns 3296 trimmers that do not need leads at all. The lead that connects to the feedback circuit in nothing more than an antenna smack in the middle of RFI/EMI hell. It picks up noise and injects it straight into the regulators feedback circuit. The longer the lead the more noise pickup up.Quote:

i've done the vGPU and vdd mod today
seems work fine
the default vGPU and VDD of my 7800GTX is 1.424v and 2.09v
by adding a 500ohm pot set to about 200 ohm, vGPU= 1.475v
by adding a 100kohm pot (96.1k according to MM) vdd=2.16v
btw. anyone know whats the max volt i can use on the ram?

Also - Slipknot - I would not do that (flash a 256GTX to the bios of a 512mb unit). Even if nvflash would let you do it, which I doubt it would, the card would not post (especially) because the memory speeds on the 512mb (for the 1.1ns mem) are way too high for the 1.6ns mems on the 256... even with the vmods. that's my $0.02

1) I am going to be on aircooling (modded A64 stock heatsink, its a bigger than what i was using before (old socket A heatsink) which still gets like 45ish load temps at 500/1400. Im also gonna add a shroud system to cool the card with around 54cfm of airflow pushed throught the vreg, mem, and core heatsinks collectively. I should be fine right?
2) As long as I have airflow, the voltage regulator heatsink that comes stock should be fine correct? I dont mind replacing it if need be, i would just like save some money.
3) Any links to the trimmers I need? Any part numbers, etc etc, would be nice. I want to make sure Im doing this right
4) I know to turn the pots to max resistance for lowest volts, but which way ups resistance? clockwise or counterclockwise?

Alrihgt mid typing i just realized a major problem.
I was looking at my card and i noticed that C695 is COMPLETELY GONE. I can tell its been ripped off. But Ive been nothing but carefull around this card, and i cant find it lying aroudn my work area. Well just flipping switches hardly takes the card back to stock lol. Since the NV cards run .200 volt lower Vcore (unmodded) in 2D mode it is really unneeded anyway. The danger will occur only if u give a big jump in voltage.
The swithes are not just for the normal purpose of an on/off but to be able to "rest" the vga during benching...for example between the test selections of 3dmark2001...

If you water cooling the card then why are you worrying about temps anyways? I am doing 680/1410 right now on my 7800gtx w/ core @ 1.68V and have load at around 42C max when running 3dmark05. But whatever, to each his own. Cant wait till I get my vddr mod stuff and sinks (winks at VJ)

comp didn't explode.. just no change in voltage.. the wires were reading 200 and 94.4 before solder.. which is the exact same the trimmer legs were showing..

*edit* so far error free at 570/1420..@1.7gpu and 2.25vdd.. not that great of clocks but a little better than the 450/1320 I was stuck at without mod... temps are 42c load.. little better than the 85c the stock cooler was doing without mod too..(maze4 block)

so... new problem.
after doing the mod.. when running 3d mode.. you can hear the vid card at work through the speakers. . . hard to describe it.. when running 3dmark05 with the speakers at full it's kinda like a race car type sound.. revving up and down depending on what it's rendering... with speakers at normal playing games it's not noticable but just knowing it's there is rather annoying... anyway.. I take it this is an emi problem? just wondering if any of you other "wires" people experienced anything like this? or is it just my "most screwed up stuff happening to me imaginable" luck again?(on-board sound btw.. could it be the psu ground doing it? or do the other points all go the same place anyway?)

I think that the pipelines are more asked in Fillrate-Test than in any other tests.
I saw the high meaning of the pipelines in the fillrate-test as i activated 4 pipelines on my old ATI 9500. After activation to 8 pipes, the test run more smoothly than with 4 pipes.
I think that the pipelines are very "hungry" if they are needed.

There are several things that can cause a 7800's vcore PS to shutdown and trigger a reboot. OVP is determined in relative to the Vcore regulator VID pin programmed voltage config and is normally higher than 1.84 but tolerances can bring the down. The thing with OVP is it will happen the instant the Vcore exceeds the setpoint at anytime in any test.Quote:

I dont OC inside so there aint any overheating problems... just my watercooling on cpu wants to freeze all the time, this time getting dryice

Sure not, but in this test i saw a dependency between power consumption and the temperature of the GPU (and a larger drop down of the 12V in fillrate-test than in MN-test).
In Austria it was 4 a.m, so i was too tierd to run 25 times. I ll do this later, today.
But i saw 2 tendencies yesterday:
- The temp-graph (in Rivatuner) grows in fillrate-test faster than in MN-test.
- The temp-graph was stable at 46°C in fillrate-test, and unstable at 44-45°C in MN-test.
The fillrate-test was the first test i ran, so the air around the PC was warmed up for MN-test, and the GPU-temps were nevertheless lower.
I ll post later some graphs an values.

Is there any way to prevent OVP or core shutdown from occuring? Does this have anything to do with the amount of amps that the system powersupply has? Or is this card-specific? My issue is that when using vcore above 1.75V the card will bench a single run and through the middle of the second the screen just turns off. The computer stays on, but it looks as if the card shut it self off. I figured it was peaks in voltage causing it to bump up past 1.85v, but I have never actually seen any jumps during benching on my radioshack multimeter.
Oh I have a copper big flower Prescott 3.2GHz cooler on it :) Ill but 1.65v on it then? But yeah.. what volts for memory? Mem heatsinks are one of the best i have ever seen... copper botom and aluminum fins

There are only 3-4 peak values at 45°C. Most temperatures are 43-44°C. The temperature depends on the watereffect in MN. The more watereffects are drawn, the higher the power consumption and the higher the temepratures. In one test, the effect changes 5-6 times from low watereffect to much watereffect and back.

The issue is you do not know if the shutdown is being triggered by OVP (doubt it) or OCP (more likely). So far I have not found work arounds but I am not looking either. I do not run Vcore's high enough to trigger a latched Vcore PS shutdown in any case except for rare exception/odd ball cards with cores, that appear from the temps at the Vcore being run, to draw well in excess of typical current draw at the Vcore the PS is shutting down at.Quote:

You can not exactly equate indicated average die temperature to rapidly changing core current draw and the localized heating it produces. The simple fact is 3DM03 MN and/or 3DM01 N produce the highest core peak current draws and that is why they are used to determine max core current draw and power consumption. The peak draws are not steady state but that are high enough and long enough to generally cause a 7800 core core to lockup (instantaneous localized heating) or to trigger a Vcore PS latched shutdown on OCP in those tests first when the card will run perfectly fine everywhere else.

n00bish question alert but when using autodetec in coolbits which core of an SLI is actaully being checked?my gtxs are votmodded, thanks to persivore ;) ,and I set the vgpu to 1.65. I notice whn i run coolbits auto the vgpu of card 1 is reading 1.63V or so but the vgpu of card 2 is only at 2d setting of 1.4V.
so in SLI when you overclock is it setting both cores at this same overclock or is it only the main gfx card that is overclocked?
I also had a mutlimeter in my hand. Exactly in that moments, when the water-effects were drawn, i read the lowest voltage. I do not have a good PSU (350W), but my advantage is, that i can read drop downs@12V. The highest dropdown i got in the fillrate-test (constantly 11.63V). In MN-test i got 11.65-11.73V. In that moments, when there were more watereffects shown as trees, gras... i got 11.66-11.67V. In other moments i got 11.69-11.73V.
You think, that my actualization-rate is too high. I will do this tests again. This time, i will check a log-file and set the rate to 10ms (a lower value is not possible). I hope thas low enough and i ll see what values i ll get.

Vddq is probably being regulated by the same regulator as Vdd (the ISL6534). I would guess that FB1/pin 29 (or something connected to it) would be the point which needs modding.Quote:
