ABIT IC7 – IC7-G – IC7 MAX3 ALL in one Modifications - The way to go!

My friend just did a stupid thing, and I would like everybody to know of the thing.
He unplugged the main ATX cable from the mobo and tried to jumpstart it (to meassure voltages) with the ATX12 cable still in the board.
This made one MOSFET burn out next to the connector. There's a hole in the top of it. (See attached image, between sinks and 2 caps)
So beware of doing that!

I would like to know if you guys think it is possible to replace this component?
Or is the board more likely to be completely destroyed?
I know some of you guys have dead boards lying around. I would be xtremely glad if someone could unsolder that component and send it to me.
I can pay for it and shipment through PayPal.

He,he,he.........I once did burned down the EXCACT SAME Mos-Fet when I worked my other everyday 24/7 SETI crunching rig with an overclocked - on air - Prescott CPU.......Nothing to worry about, it can be repaired.........When I was waiting till I found one so as to repair mine , Another Mos-Fet went down - the one next to it - and for about 1 1/2 weeks I was working my Mobo with TWO PHASE power.....I had to unsolder them so as to work with two phases........It continued to work even with two phases......... :D

ok, so if I unsolder the legs of the mosfet, it might work with 3 phases?
Or do I need to unsolder the other one also, to get only 2 phases?

Hipro: Do you know if I can get another MOSFET, with the same spec?
Or do I really need one from an IC7 board?

i burnt out a vdimm mosfet. it got so hot it actually melted the copper layer in the board(i wired the vtt mod backward). i just unsoldered it cleaned the mb off put the same mosfet from a wrecked board and presto it worked..

Does anyone (i.e. Hipro5) know what that little smt is connected to the positive leg of the electrolytic capacitor?

I accidentally soldered off the metal end of the smt that would have connected to the capacitor. :( I wasn't sure what to do so I went ahead and soldered my capacitor (1.500uF) to that point on the mobo. As a result, I have lost my onboard USB and I can't overclock as high as I could before my mishap at either 1:1 or 5:4.

Can I just replace that smt or am I screwed?

Yes you could tottaly unsolder the small Mos-Fet and work as a three phase circuit........

Sorry I don't know........I used a dead IC7 mobo to do so........ ;)

I managed to fix the problem. It's not pretty but everything is back to normal. If this happens to anyone else, a 100nF multilayer capacitor makes a good replacement. I found one on a broken xbox motherboard.

I´m not sure, because its a ultra low esr Capacitor (13mOhm/20°)!

now a second unsolved question about Vnorth voltage!

Why the voltage with a installed Prescott CPU is 0,2V lower (MM reading 1,3V in Bios) than a Northwood (should be 1,5V)!

Have the Vnorth Mod, i mean the Mod with the 50K variable Resistor near second PCi Slot negative Effects for Prescott usage!

Because on my last Max3 i have contact at the Vdd Mosfet´s measering point to the middle pin of the mosfet! heedless :toast:

Now i measure at the Vdd point 1,432V, but the old board gives me a blue screen, soon i set higher vcore! standard Vcore every thing is ok!

Maybe i need a new Vdd Mosfet, but i dont find the same one! infinion, but wich one! And where to buy, i´m from Austria (sorry for my bad english ;) )

No.........You can mod it to show you the right temp.....

I'm weary of soldering little capacitors and things that like if that's what it takes..

I modded my new IC7 today, but I have a problem with the VAGP-mod. The solder didn't stick to the pcb, near the cutted trace. What I'm doing wrong :(

did you scratch the coating on top of the trace? you should see clean copper wire then. put some flux and tin it. should solder without a problem. it is hard to get it to stay there. make sure you put a dab of superglue afterwards

I've got a question about the Vdd mod, is it possible to do it with a pencil instead of soldering a VR ?
Was thinking to use a 2B pencil and reduce the resistance as it is... will this work ? what you guys recon?

Hi again, couldn't resist so i did the mod with a pencil :D
for a weird reason the vdd measured from the mosfet above the agp was showing 1.28v default :confused: while it should be 1.4v or something???
Anyway, with the pencil mod it went up to 1.68v, question is, will this be safe to operate 24/7 with the stock cooler? (the blue heatsink with the fan in it, not the old one with a square cheapo chipset cooler with seperate fan that hooks on it).

IF you have a Northy this voltage is about 1.42V but if you place a Prescott one , this voltage is about 1.28V.......So it's OK.....for a prescott..... ;)

Try to have 1.72Volts for a Northy and 1.52Volts for a Prescott max for 24/7....... ;)

I'm using the stock cooler lapped down with 1500grid paper and using some artic silver ceramique on it.

To be honest i didn't saw any difference in overclockability... i've stuck at 4.16Ghz rock stable :( even with 1.28vdd or 1.68v that it is now... any suggestions?

Hi!

I think, your VDD with a standard stock cooler is too much!!

You should set the max. VDD for safe 24/7 usage (with a installed Prescott)
at 1,52V! (that´s 0,24V over standard VDD from 1,28V)

Only you got a Northwood installed, than you can try 1,72 (Standard VDD 1,42-1,48V)

Give only 0,2-0,25V more Voltage in relation to your actual standard VDD for safe use!


What´s your actual Vcore and wich cooling you are using for your CPU?

Im using a watercooling setup... with 1.53-55v vcore (at idle) and ~1.47v (at full load)

A 3.2 Prescott "rock stable" @ 4,16 with a watercooled setup and a stock northbridge air cooler is a very great result!!

Think you are reached the maximum performance of your CPU@ watercooling!
Vcore is in "my" opinion also the max for 24/7 usage by watercooling!

Also, looking for a Vapochill LS, that´s a great but expensive deal to go higher!

GROUND is the one side of the MC371 where one cable is soldered and the other spot is the THIRD spot from the IC and to com and serial ports side (not the CPU side) of the mobo......There's a missing resistor there.... ;)

Ok. I think I'm going to go balls deep into these mods now that I have some good ram to play with (Corsair TWINX1024-3200LLPT / XMS3205 v1.1 BH-5).

My question concerns some of the items required to do the mods on the IC7. For example; Hipro uses mostly 25 turns 200ohms trimmers for the volt mods. I found them online but I'd rather not pay on shipping for such a small thing. Radio shack sells these: RS trimmer

Which are 15 turn 1kohm trimmers. Will these work since they are 15 turns?

Now regarding the (goddamned) electrolytic capacitor; How old does the motherboard have to be in order to have the type needed (high internal resistance). I tried finding it online, but apparently either they don't sell them in high resistance anymore or i havent searched well enough. I ask cuz I don't have ANY old mobos around and I'd have to start calling up peeps to see if they got old mobos laying around.

Now about the VAGP... Am i the only one that thinks running 1.95 volts to a 6800 ultra is kinda wacko ? Or it doesn't affect video cards at all? Couldn't I just set the trimmer at something more reasonable like... um... 1.80v?

The last thing is in regard to the wires he uses. Some of the spots I gotta solder are EXTREMELY SMALL. What size gauge wire is best to get the job done?

Sorry for being such a noober but I'm emotionally attached to this Ic7 and I wanna clear out all my doubts before getting to the point of no return...

ANY help/comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

What is that C64 transistor in max3 for? Why should I remove it? I've found out that the VDIMM mod in Max3 doesn't have an accurate adjustment over 3.10V as I found in IC7-G. I think a 500ohm trimmer would fix it..

My friend got a new abit ic7 max3 ver 1.0 from factory today. And he says he's VTT is normal above 2.8 ! 1.6V @ 3.2 vdimm. And he can set even higher vagp then me, or other normal users he can do 1.8 from bios.

That's very strange for me and we started to compare vdimm circuits and vagp. The reveal was shocking for me He have exactly the same circuits as ME, but very different then are on hipro's page.

My max3 came the same way and is not stable above 2.8. I can't even run my ram at it's stock voltage of 2.85 without the mod. I have OCZ PC4400EL Gold. Abit didn't put 2.85 in there and it just wouldn't do 2.9 stable.

Sorry. Hadn't done much work like this before. Found out that going over on the voltage is okay. They just usually cost more but, not much. Someone mentioned that the cap should not have that much length in wires to the attachment points, though. You may want to shorten them and lay the cap closer. Maybe next to the pll chip. I was going to do something similar since I have a Swiftech MCX159 and the retention clips go right over the area the cap is to be soldered.

Yes, mine is the same....not stable above 2. vdimm.

and another difference is his VAGP...he can set 1.8V in bios. I can only set 1.65! Very strange...

I'll try to flush with his bios tonight and see if that helps, but I doubt it...

sorry to bother you, billy, but the pictures from hipro5's site are for an ABIT IC7-G, not a MAX3. Hipro5 mentioned that "MAX 3 has also a resistor AND a tiny SMD transistor ABOVE it that HAS to be unsoldered as well…", so your picture doesn't prove anything.

That explains a lot then!

But it still doesnt explain how come he's got a "working" VTT ...

i hope i get his bios fast... ;)

It isn't far away. There is nothing between them.

So it doesn't affect the performance of the mod to have the legs of the cap extended like that? I think I'll do mine like that too if not... as it will keep the legs from stressing the resistors and potentially ripping one off.

Ther is no problem at all, the wire resistance is pretty small, and no componentes betwenn them to increse the current delay.

If the caps are black (or dark purple) with gold writting then use these.

has anybody experiences with vAGP set to 1,9V and GF6800 Series?

I'm trying to perform mod 1: "Electrolytic Cap" mod. I went to radioshack, and they only had a "non-polarized" cap; that means for the mod, I can hook up either end to either side right?

Also the instructions said: "high internal resistance"... the box mades no mention of that... here's the cap:

272-997 RadioShack
2.2 uF Electrolytic Capacitor
Non-Polarized
For speaker crossover: 8kHz at 8 ohms
50V maximum
Axial Leads
Operating Temp: -40* to 185*F (-40* to 85*C)

Radio Shack will not have any caps the quality you will need. The "high internal resistance" he speaks of are "LOW ESR" or "Ultra LOW ESR" caps. Usually marked with gold writing. The reason for this is the short rise times and superior ripple handling. A poor cap in this position will actually lower performance or damage the MB. Look for Rubycon or Nichicon brand.

Hi! Have just finished the VDDR and VTT mod. Started the system and with the VDDR set to 2.5 V in BIOS adjusted the VDDR to 2.92 V real V, set the VTT to 1.46. Voltages stabel and no problems. Upped the volts to 2.55 V in BIOS and rebooted. Now VDDR are down to 2.8V and VTT to 1.41 V !!!! :confused:

Tried to increase the voltage step by step and volts do come up. Set VDDR to 2.5 V in BIOS again and adjusted VDDR to 2.91 V real. Rebooted and this time it holds and upping volts makes VDDR increase as it should. :(

What was the strange behavior the first time I increased voltages in BIOS???? :rolleyes: Had rebooted a couple of times before the first time I increased VDDR in BIOS, VDDR stable at 2.92 V. So why volt droop, may I have damaged something????

I am about to do the cap mod on my IC7-g and just recieved my caps. The thing is I ordered 6.3v 2200uf Ultra low ESR caps but they set me 10v 2200uf Ultra low ESR caps. Will these work fine or will they mess my mb up?

They should work fine, but they might be slightly bigger than the 6.3v caps.

Hipro, thanks a lot for the guide, they're awsome. Also, I have couple of questions:

1. Instead of using the through-hole caps, can I use SMD caps with same specs and better quality? If it's okay to use SMD in replacement, can I use smaller 0402 caps or have to use the 0603?

2. The modwires, you mentioned to use small wires, would the 30awg be okay? (they're very small, smaller than the ones in the pics - 26awg I believe?) And for some mods where it'd require bigger cable to feed the current to Vmem (one of the last mod you shown), what gauge size should I use?

I'm asking these question is because I have a lot of access to SMD caps and microscopic soldering equipments, therefore, I'd try to see if I can keep it as clean as possible.

Can anyone tell me where i could purchase an input choke from the uk for one of these mods?

i managed to wreck one attempting to remove it from a dead mobo and dont particularly fancy my chances at attempting again.

ive looked on RS, but couldnt find anything looking similar

the ones i have recieved are a couple of 63V 2200uF Caps (ordered 6.3V), 3 16v 2200uF (should have been 1200u-M(?) :rolleyes: ) and 8 35v 220u-M caps (should have been 6.3v and 2200uF :rolleyes: )

im guessing that for the most part i cant use these? not too impressed with this so far tbh

You only need the 6.3V 2200 uF caps soldered paralleled to the ones onboard, coz they are filtering caps for the vcore. I say hipro5 knows best and just follow the guide he made :fact:

sweet... so your saying that as long as theyre capacitance is 2200uF theyre fine? the fact that the voltages are all higher doesnt mean they cant be used for this?

2200uF 16V is bigger than 2200uF 6.3V. That's the only difference I can think off and one of the most important things are the max temps and the ESR of the caps.....

With the 6.3V 2200uF caps, you can still solder them behind the mb without hacking the back of your case :D

heh...was gonna hack up the back of the case anyway :D

while i think of it - the choke for this - i dont seem to have a spare one i can use.
is there anything specific to look out for? or is it just a ferrite core of some kind with a relatively thick wire wrapped round it?

You're welcome..... :)

You can use as tiny SMD's as you wish and can handle of caurse.......Only think to been taken care off, is to be in specs......For example, you must not use caps with less voltage than the one you have on your circuit ........

2. You can use small wires for the mods......Not to much current drow.....BUT for the Vdimm and the VTT, you HAVE to use a bit thicker.... ;)

gotcha, so I can use SMD parts with the same specs? I was worried about the mods since like the Electrolytic capacitor mod, you mentioned that it needs to have high internal resistance, that's why I was worried if I need a really BIG cap. I'll try it with the SMDs, hopefully, it'll come out nice and clean. :)

You must have misunderstood something here. You sure don't want to have high internal resistance, but indeed the exact opposite. What you should be looking for is an ESR that is as low as possible. ;) You sure can use smd parts if you can find some with the same specs.

But please don't use high ESR parts. :)

That's what I thought, and the reason why I got confused. Because on the guid, Hipro mentions that. At my company, we have some good quality parts, so I think that I"ll be good.

Btw, why shouldn't I be using ESR parts?

Oooopppsssssss............I just noticed that part of the capacitor..........It must been writen wrong when the translation from Greek to English took place.........I'll tell the guys to correct it.........and yes it is LOW ESR electrolytic capacitor........ :)

Thanks bro, I must be on drug that day :slapass: . I thought of you saying that ESR is a type of Capacitor because these SMDs have different rating (from Extremely good quality caps to low quality caps - which I'm not familiar with the types and their names); that's why I mistook the "ESR" as a "good type" capacitor and not ESR as its definition.
