Working app_info files

Didn't know about saving the files, sorry. Have done so now, but I caught something in the latest files transfer for dsfl that isn't in the app file

None of the app files I have looked at mention the underlined file but is looks important. I am not qualified to add it to an app file if it is important.
Edit: running bionc w/o app file for now to see where this would go.

That is the 32 bit executable for DSFL which (I think) runs slower (by a hair) on a 64 bit machine.
That is what I was talking about in post #295 when I mentioned using the app_info to force using 64bit executables for 32 bit tasks.

Changed dsfl app info to to one posted last page, however i have too many wu's atm to see if it updates. Will post here with info if it works or not.

retro ... don't sweat it ... I'm not sure it ever existed on the site. I know I did this in one of my personal app_info ... just one more tool to out in your kit ... maybe I'll update my stupidly technical approach to app_info thread :up:

It's currently running 4 HCC on the GPU and 4 DSFL on the CPU.

Snow Crash

I finally figured out how to disable HT on this motherboard.
My processor ran harder at a constant 75% in HT off (14 count).
And for my particular setup HT on (26 count) it is ~5-7 seconds faster vs HT off (14 count).
As for cooling I'm water cooled and low 60's is max for Intel Burn Test. And Tjmax is 100.
But this configuration is with a i7 3930 @4.2 and one 7950 @ 1000... (the replacement is out of stock for the second video card that was bad.)

Does this update the DSFL units? That was my problem, I would end up having to finish all my work units and remove the app file. Ended up switching to HFCC units which app file works for me just fine.
If it works I will add that to my app file and do those again, they seem to use more power and make more heat.

Since you are adding to your system you may wish to switch to a newer version of BOINC and then use the config file to set up your rig. Anonymous users will eventually not be accepted by the server.

app_info will soon be retired so I am going to recommend you switch to using an app_config file

you will need to run BOINC 7.0.42.

Go Here and have a quick read

App_config is a lot easier than app_info

card is here and I'm going to shut down and install.

Using my 2nd computer, I followed the instructions in post #1 and placed the post #8 app_info.xml as directed. When I brought BOINC back on line, I only had one ATI GPU running a task. How do I get, my second ATI GPU up and running. I do not pretend to understand the app_info programming which is why I pasted the data as written in Post #8.

Ok, confused here.
I do the install on the Beast and all goes well, then I take the 5879 card downstairs to use it to replace the GTX460 card in the 2600K machine
I uninstall BOINC, I uninstall the nVidia drivers, I install the latest 13.1 ATI drivers and then install BOINC 7.0.59
I copy the same 3 WU config_info.sml file into the program data/ wcg project folder, set the machine on the same profile as the beast is and no GPU work being done
I do get a message in boinc log of "No ATI card found" or words to that effect..Ideas?
OOPS, later it says it found the config_info.xml file and it downlads one gpu WU and instant "computational error

MM, go to the BOINC Manager > Tools > Computing preferences...
Click on the processor usage tab
Click on Use GPU while computer is in use

I need to see that first lines of your log when you start up to see if Boinc is seeing app_config and open_cl. The 3 important lines are:

Out of interest did you do the whole package including open_cl when you did the drivers? and then did you re-boot?

Yes, installed whole 131mb AMD driver package with the catalyst control panel.

MM, Your app_config file looks OK. It should provide you with 3 ATI_GPU WUs and 5 CPU WUs. Please post your CC_config file as well so we can peak at it and look for that missing start tag.

Open the app_config.xml file for that rig in notepad and re-save it as app_config.xml. Make sure that you use the ALL Files save option. Have Boinc re-read config file and see if that makes a difference. If still no joy, shut down rig completely, leave of for a few minutes and then re-start the OS and BOINC.

Oh yes... beware MM, using your sledge hammer in close quarters, in sleek sheet, could be very messy...!!! :ROTF:

Your CC_config looks good to me. The computing error you see in BOINC manager should also show up on the WCG "Result / Error" for that rig online. If they do click on the "Error" location in the listing. Another window should open up listing the name and/or error code encounter. If more than one listing list them all.

Also could post the top portion of your log file up to where the crunching entries start. If you exit and re-start BOINC, you should get a short and fresh log for us to view.

I suggest you try to uninstall BOINC 7.0.59 and installing 7.0.58. If still having problem then I would uninstall AMD CAT 13.1. I would then do an AMD display driver cleanup with either Drive Fusion and/or Drive sweeper 3.2.0 followed by a full re-install of AMD CAT 13.1.

Seriously, consider this: RIGHT before I made the video card change that machine was working fine on WCG running one GPU WU on a nVidia 460GTX
Also consider that the ATI 5780 has been working fine up to and including friday when I took it out.
I didn't drop it so we should be safe to assume the hardware is good agreed?
Then I copied/pasted the app_info.XML file that was working fine across the network to the machine the ATI card was goiung to..
Bottom line is I can't see what is wrong but my nexct attempt is to uninstall boind totally, make sure nothing is left on it and then yes, I'll try 7.0.58 and see what happens

Did you uninstall the old Nvidia drivers? Sometimes Nvidia and ATI drivers don't play nice together when the Nvidia card has been removed. And FWIW you don't need all that extra stuff from the ATI driver package. Video driver, audio driver and APP SDK runtime is all that's needed. :yepp:

MM, I'm curious as to why you're running GPU and CPU tasks on the same machine? Are the CPU tasks from another project?

He has 32 cores to play with and a 7870 on one machine and 8 cores and a 5870 on another machine. on the former there are 12 cores dedicated to gpu just now and on the latter 3 cores on gpu

Gotta keep the others busy so they work HCC as well

I know that my previously suggested corrective actions involved a bit of work on you part. Here is my reasoning for my previous suggestions. They were listed from least work to most work involved.

1- Re-save or re-create app_config file - I have had one experienced where an app_config.xml file got corrupted transferring it from one rig to another. After many frustating problem solving hours re-creating it corrected the situation.

2- Switch from BOINC 7.0.59 to 7.0.58 . BOINC 7.0.59 is an unknown entity for me I am successfully using 7.0.58 and I know that it works.

3- Re-install CAT 13.1 after full uninstall and Nvidia and ATI display driver sweep with Drive Fusion and/or Drive Sweeper. As stated by Nano, switching a rig from Nvidia to ATI/AMD video drivers or vice versa can leave many entries in your file folders and OS registry that will cause you problem(s) after the new install. This is specially true when dealing with older video drivers and OEM un-installing applications.

In summary MM, by switching from an Nvidia to AMD video card & driver you have made a major switch to that crunching rig that could have left troublesome remnants of the previous Nvidia video driver behind. This may require you to do a full set of video driver sweep (Nvidia + ATI/AMD) to rectify the situation.

Also suggest that you continue your trouble shooting in the "app_config" thread located here The "Working app_info" thread you are using is dated and no longer valid. It must be removed from our stickies and replaced with a new App_config thread. The app_info sticky is providing first time GPU cruncher with invalid info and much duress specially if we keep it alive with new "app_config" related posts.

That's the attitude. A little trick I figured out for modifying the app_config file is make a Shortcut of the file and move the Shortcut to your Desktop. That way, while you're modifying the file, trying to figure out what is the best settings for your computer is, you don't have go looking for the app_config file. Just click on the Shortcut on your Desktop. It saved me time and frustration.

Beast is fine and that sucker is screaming with 12 GPU WU and 20 cpu WU..I'm thinking of going to 16 GPU WU as my cpu load never shows more than 81%

A yardstick that I use to determine if I have a good setting in the app_config file is how much time does it take to complete a GPU task? If you increase the number of GPU task running but it takes longer to run each task, then have you really gained anything? And, of course, if it starts causing errors, then you know you've gone to far. Been there, done that.

Agreed.. Hey, can you guys send back work right now? I can't get through. I have a ton completed and a huge amount on hand so I'm not worried about running out yet..

I get a notice about a syntax error, clicking on it takes me here http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Anonymous_platform

The project then forgets all work units in progress and won't fetch new work, even though the event log doesn't show errors.

JMHO but I wouldn't run more than one GPU WU on an nVidia based card..That is just my opinion..

I have my NVIDIA GPUs set to 0.5C + 0.5NV. Works for me.

The link referred to the app_info.xml file. That is not where you want to go.

MM - if you are running BOINC on more than one computer, you might want to download/install/run BoincTasks. I use it to keep a watch on all my computers - http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/boinc_tasks/

With nVidia yours will be a bit different.

Confirm which Boinc version and confirm that you have deleted any previous app_info file.

My log is currently clear as I had to reset WCG to get it crunching again and I don't want to break it again tonight for fear of not getting more work units, but I've never seen app_config and I had to make app_info (it wasn't there). BOINC version 7.0.59.

can't remember the exact version number but I think it was boinc 7.0.42 and later require app config or at least prior to that it doesn't work.

You are correct OC. 7.0.40 or above to use app_config. Do not use app_info in 7.0.40 or above. You'll be stuck with WUs that won't report.

I took a chance, it's now running four WUs :)

Update:
I uninstalled 7.0.59, installed 7.0.58, same issue
Then I tried Driver sweeper, removed all the NVidia hidden files and reg entries, booted, did a fresh install of 7.0.58 and sam thing and this in the log:

MM, Can you confirm that you followed these steps to use Drive Sweeper..

1- Un-install AMD CAT 13.1 and delete C:\AMD\Support\13-1_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql
2- re-boot in safe mode
3- Use drive sweeper to remove Nvidia and ATI/AMD display drivers
4- Do normal OS re-boot & re-install AMD CAT 13.1
5- Re-start system
6- re-start BOINC

No, I did exactly what I said above..Didn't see the need to remove the ATI 13.1 drivers since that is what i needed to use..:D
Sort of made up my mind tonight that I'm replacing the board and will have a fresh formatted drive to start with.

I had an issue when I messed with drivers. The WUs would immediately error out upon starting. I cleared them(drivers) out and reinstalled everything and the problem was fixed. But if you don't buy that, it's a good enough excuse to get a new board! Will this board be hypothetical like the other one?

It's actually a board I sold to a guy here, someone stepped on the box in shipping and he sent it back to me and I replaced it..
One of the dimm locks is broken off but I think it's usable..Not sellable but usable and a big step up from that first gen Intel board that the 2600K is in now.

I think I'm missing something else now, since doing the app_config file the only threads using the CPU are GFX threads. My CPUs are sitting at 16 % usage and all CPU tasks are Waiting to run :/
