I have 2 cards so it is a pain to flash. Not just taking them out but all the reboots with the changes plus add an extra reboot to disablng ULPS. I am seeing it is possibly though by editing a config file so its all good.

Using afterburner I'm running at 1.015v at 880c 1450mem on my 6970:banana:
Uses 50 watts less:)

That's quite interesting actually. If you look at it this way, 900 for me needs about 1.10v. Now if i were to try 880 like you, i would expect it to need about... 1.05-1.07. But maybe, it might actually need less. Considering the lower core clock and the lower voltage, temps would be mighty low, allowing it to possibly need even less volts? I'm gona try it :D
Edit: What did you set VID3 as? 25mv less than VID4?
Also, if this works as i think it might, then i would be able to have a more conservative fan speed table (i use trixx for that). As really, even 6950 clocks is all you (I) need, considering i'm only on 1680x1050.
Edit2: well, 1.025v won't do 880, 1.05v testing... <- 1.05v did it, passed a good 15 minutes of gpu tool stability tester, now to test in games.
If I might ask, is there a way I can get my Gigabyte HD6870OC supported for controlling voltage?
I tied After Burnert 2.1 Beta 6, Gigabyte OC Guru, Asus Smart Doctor, Sapphire Trixx, non of support voltage controll.
U don't have to take them out, just use another command for atiflash
atiflash -f -p 0 xxx.bin (first card)
atiflash -f -p 1 xxx.bin (second card)
Still don't work with 1.3V, 1.275V it's ok with msi ab.

anyone noticed how annoyingly the 1st gpu clock varies when DOWNvoltaging the card?(6950), even though powertune is set to +20%, when adjusting the voltage(in AB), the closer to 1.1 volt i set (<1.1) the lesser the clock fluctuations.. When i stress test them with occt gpu, the 2nd card stays at full clock, but the 1st varies between 561 and 800mhz
edit:
found a "quick and dirty" way to avoid this bug (dunno if happens to others though)
Set the desirable voltage in afterburner, move the powertune slider to -20% for both cards, APPLY, then move again to +20% for both, APPLY, and gpu1 clock now is constant.
edit2: it doesnt happen with 1 vga in the system, i can adjust every secodn a new value to voltage, and during occt gpu gpu clock stays solid.
Actually Im currently now running at 1.035v as I found out in heaven benchmark as soon as tessellation was added, weird artifacting happened. Also one of my games could make it also show instability at 1.015v. My card is water cooled which seems to help how low I can do with voltage.
But still that's a far away point from stock 1.175v:)
I kinda just gave up :p: just stuck it to 900mhz 1.10v, and 1400 on the memory. I can run up to ~1475, but i just want to save on heat a little bit.
You need to dissable CCC when using afterburner per wizzards instructions. Works fine without the 20% adjustment, if you dissable it and are still having issues try reinstalling the drivers. I was having the same issue at first but a fresh install of the drivers seems to have solved it.

Very nice scores there guys, better than i expected
What did you do different from the earlier vantage results to get better score? Install 11.1a?
Is anyone using Afterburner 2.1.0 Beta 6 w/ HD69XX crossfire? As soon as I overclock w/ it, it causes GPU usage on the first GPU to peg @ 99% and not ever drop.

Good VGA i guess, first try with tweaks and stuff but crappy OS =/
I will try on xp and vista to get more cpu score =/.
Nice run there Bullu$.
Tnx,
Xp give me a higher score as u can see.

Ahhhh wait for my Gigabyte 6970 arrived
After switching from a P5wdh to a P67 UD5 board, my videocard overclock went way up. (it previously wouldn't even do 945 mhz at 1.25v unless the fan was blasting, now its going 950 at 1.225 and 60%, since I was flashed there before the system upgrade). I'll revert to stock later to see just how far the OC increased (old stock max was 920), and then see about going past ccc limits. I also had GSOD at 1450 RAM on the old board. With this new board, no GSOD...

Hi,
Have I a poor sample here. I can just do 920@1450 with out crach in 3DMark11. Memory looks fine but the gpu???
All over 920 make a crash. It doesn´t matter if I change "power settings" to +20 in ccc either.
Maximum stable overclock, using 1.30v max in afterburner and 100% fan speed.
Tested using atitool. I found when there's no OC programs running in background it allows gpu usage to go up to 98-100%. It finds errors quite quickly, more than gputool i think.

Modded Sapphire 6950 with 6970 bios.
It won't go higher than 920/1425 at stock voltage though, higher and it can't go through 3dmark 11.
Can any one explane for me how to unlock msi ab so I can oc further than 950MHz on gpu?
It is a noob qust. but wtf!! ;)
I use version 2.1.0 beta 7. Do I have to uninstall ccc or what?
Update: I solved it! :)
Thx any way..
This is my max OC so far.
2x Sapphire 6970 with Asus bios watercooled. Got lots of OC headroom on the CPU's but just testing OC on the 6970's.

So how do you do when you use msi ab? I can easily do 950@1450 with 1.2V but everything over 950 crash 3dmark11. Vcore does not matter. I have tryed up to 1.3V.
Do you disable ccc?.....if how?
Thanks in advance.
cant go over 950mhz in my XFX HD6970, what software are you guys using?
do i need to flash another bios?
I would Flash the cards with Asus bios and use Asus Smartdoctor to enable higher OC
Can the bios version effect the gpu limit?
Not sure I understan your question, if you mean the max OC limt fo your card I dont think so but if you mean OCing over 950/1450 then i Think the Asus bios combined with Asus SmartDoctor is the best combo at the moment.
Improved a little on my 3DMark11 and Hwbot Heaven DX11 scores:D

Very nice score! Impressive memory oc!!
dump the ASUS smartdoc and use MSI AB. smartdoc actually limits the OC potential, i've done the comparing to proove it. though my card is an HD5970, i still get higher clocks and better numbers with MSI AB.
Sry guys for asking but i have problems with setting the clock on my XFX6970 running in CF over CCC frequencies (950/1450) in Afterburner beta7. I have flashed both cards to Asus bios and enabled unofficial overclocking mode in Msi Afterburner cfg file. What am i missing here? I have the cards watercooled and would like to push them a little further than 1050Mhz with Trixx on 1.175V (if i use AB for setting the voltage Pc freezes)
Have you done this:
To enable unofficial overclocking in this version it is necessary to:
Set UnofficialOverclockingEULA field to the following text: I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
Set UnofficialOverclockingMode to 1 to keep PowerPlay active (may not work on old ASICs), 2 to traditionally disable PowerPlay or to 0 to temporary disable unofficial overclocking path
Great thanks for info :toast:
When you have Asus bios use SmartDoctor to enable "Overclocking range enhancement"
Then close SmartDoctor and fire up AF or "AF voltage unlocker", that's what I've done.

That's the right one and it should work, have you flashed your cards with Asus bios? If so try again, your info looks just like mine in GPU-z and SmartDoctor works fine here.
did you set the EULA part in the config file too?

Did you reinstall drivers after flashing, stupid question maybe?
agrhh crash now, i have 2 RE-install my OS

how about 1.4V
I think all 6970's are software limited to 1,35v
How did you enable past 1.3V in afterburner?Or you made some bios adjustments?Or how :)?Could you upload that bios somewhere?Thnks.
I just downloaded Afterburner voltage unlocker
Im new to these cards, was using a GTX470 for a while now but just got my 6950 yesterday. Flash went great and it seems I have overclock pretty well.
What is the default core voltage for a 6950? and a 6970?
Has anyone shown yet how much these cards can tage, voltage wise, before we start seeing them die?
I think mine is at 1.175v right now and I turned up the power setting in the overdrive tab of Catalyst Control Center to +20%. That would mean the core is getting 1.4v doesnt it? Is that safe if I want to keep the car for 3 years?
Pretty sure 1175 is the highest in the V registers in bios of 6970 ref cards at least so assuming it is default. Also pretty sure you won't get 1.4 out of CCC unless you go Smart Doc or Afterburner with the mod to get it or edit for higher. I couldn't get Smart Doc to work, so used Afterburner (latest beta) and edit of Bios (via RBE) to the max volts I wanted and left voltage locked in afterburner. The Afterburner mod mentioned above did increased the volt headroom to 1.4 but it didn't seem stable for some reason so went back to modded bios. My chip doesn't seem to like temps much above 72C but I'd imagine if you keep temps high 70's low 80's max your card should last you the 3 years to forever.
I see a lot of folks over the 1000MHz mark. What are you considering stable? I've been trying to get Furmark stable. Standard @1920 x 1200, MSAA 8X, is fine but with extreme burning, disp. mapp. and post FX the card dies at ~30min - Temps stay under 80C with up to 1.45V so the card isn't roasting or anything (Arctic Acc cooler). Those settings are probably way extreme and unnecessary but just curious if anyone else used them or had comments (and figured I'd go for a super Noob post:yepp:
EDIT: Furmark Post FX is the killer choice. Running both other options together run fine. Guess I should try all three at defaults (880/1375) and see what happens.
My card failed Furmark (1920x1080, extreme burn, post FX, disp map, 8x MSAA) sometime while I was at work. Core speed was 940, RAM at 1400. It was going for 45 minutes prior to when I went to work though. Highest temp was 73 degrees when I left, voltage was at stock + 20% from Overdrive tab in Catalyst.
I just dont want my card to die anytime in the next few years so I dont want to crank the voltage too much. I guess I will just leave it at 900 core and call it a day. That way I don't have to run the fan even a little bit loud either :)
Here is a good question, does the +20% in the power control area simply mean 20% more watts available to draw from? Or is it a voltage increase of +20%?
Yes, I realize a voltage increase of +20% would give the same wattage increase. But if this power control slider simply gives more wattage without raising voltage, that means it gives more amperage instead of voltage. So which is it?

Never saw any higher than 1.175V in afterburner's monitoring screen regardless of the % change power slider position in CCC so my guess is Amps but that was my first experience with AB and it may not have been set up right so could be wrong.

HI can anyone post picture with fan set 30% at 6970 like this
http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/9071/fan2kl.jpg
Diamond 6950 flashed to 6970 1000mhz core 1500 mem 1.3v 3DMark 11 6069 3DMark Vantage 24147 stock cooler. Was able to game at these settings for a little while(1hr black ops) then got off went back and after about 15 mins it froze so now im gaming at 975/1500 still very happy with a $235 card. :)
Ok I have a new MSI 6970 and it works, but even at stock speed 880/1375 it shows like a dustbuster in any game I've tried. Even running VMWARE causes it to exceed the total noise of the system (2x120mm fans, 2x60mm fans and 8x92mm fans, 8 HDs ...). Its just crazy, I've notice the temp of the card never exceeds about 73c and is normally about 71c in games, but the sound is insane. So what can I do about the noise from this card, is this even normal?
Second the card can hit 950/1450 without issues (Heaven2 for 45 minutes, furmark (which came from MSI) for 1 hour without issues, is there a way to go faster without flashing bios, or do I need to use that nice switch and flash the card to exceed those speeds.
The first issue of noise is mostimportant as I want to be able to hear when playing games, the second is just fun to play with and see how far it can go :-)
Should mention I'm using the 11.4 Preview and I've never seen the Card temps drop below 63c (even when everything is idle (CPU temps (there are 2) are on water and is only 35c at the same time.
Thanks,
ERIC

Interested if it's working correctly now with 69xx I`m at work now and will try it when I'm back at home.
i just put my case back together so im not excited to flash it again after doing it a lot yesterday changing voltages etc to get 1000mhz core.
but i may give it a shot later, especially if someone posts back saying you can change clocks.
Didn't do much overclocking on air, just unlocked and ran my 6950 at stock 6970 speeds. Put it under water yesterday, and I hit 1GHz at 1175mV, the stock 6970 VID IIRC. Not a lot of scaling going on beyond 1GHz though. I hit 1025MHz at 1250mV, and I'm still testing. Should I be cautious about the amount of volts? Or should I keep going so long as the temps are in check? Loading it at 46C presently.
Edit: Link to GPU-Z validation at 1045MHz, 1275mV.
Your temps are good try for more. Here is my max overclock for 3D Mark 06(unlocked 6950 with stock cooling at 100%).

Do we have a solution for going past 1.3v (modded 6950 BIOS) in AB? There really isn't a lot of headroom for people on water with the default limit.
See this for AB voltage unlocker.
You can also use RBE for more voltage.
I am personally waiting for 6970 Lightning BIOS, hopefully it'll work with reference cards and give us huge voltage limits and the ability to adjust vMem and VDDCI.
I was one of the first unlucky few who ended up with hosed vRAM on a Sapphire 6950, so I think I'll hold off on any vmem trickery. At least until some people with deeper pockets try it first :p
Also with heatsinks, with a 120mm fan.
I'm using Afterburner to overclock my 6950. I have all of the overclocks unlocked (via config file). However, whenever I increase the voltage past 1.1v, the settings to not take effect.
The program displays 1.15v, for example, but the voltage never goes past 1.1v in Furmark or games. What is causing this? How can I have the voltage actually increase to what I set?
i used rbe 1.27 to take my bios..well an unlock 6970 bios and change voltage like that to get the increases to take effect so i could clock a bit higher..i couldnt get anything playable in games over 915. But i went upwards to 1.3v and got some benches in at 1000core/1500mem and some gaming done at 975mhz core ..plan to try a little more once i get a new aftermarket cooler.
What's a good solution for stress testing now that OCCT/Furmark trigger throttling? I've just been using Heaven/Crysis/[new graphically intensive game] as a measure of stability.
If Furmark and OCCT trigger throttling on the card, then there isnt really a point in OCing higher anyway I dont think. Anything higher and you will just trigger throttling more in games.
Sorry if it was already posted, but some guy (I'm not sure if it's RBE's developer or a friend of him) discovered a way to patch the registry to expand CCC overdrive limits the same way Asus does, but you're not limited to Asus bios. It's a simple registry entry with some binary values and can be easily reverted (just delete the registry key). I did used the patch and now I have very higher limits on CCC.

Thread at TPU: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=141858
Using 11.4 preview, on my 6970 and I get startup temps listed as 56c (this is waking after sleeping so the actual temp is closer to 25c, it then creeps up about 73c and stays there. At the same time After burner and CCC say the fan speeds remain between 20 and 40%, yet the RPM meter says the fan is running a 5600rpm (which is I believe 100% or close to it). basically I can not use this for gaming as the sound it just crazy. I replaced a 5870 in the same slot and it's fan never exceeded 30% even under load.
Is it the preview version (which I needed to run Dragon Age 2, or is it a bad card)?
Thanks,
ERIC
Has anyone had luck flashing their overclocks to their bios? I have successfully flashed my Vgpu to 1.3 but every time I try to raise the clocks, Windows will not load.
^ i dont think thats supported yet in rbe..from what i remember reading it wouldn't work and i havent read that its been changed even in rbe 1.28..so i think you still manually have to OC in windows.
