Every little bit helps.:) One of the nice things about distributed computing is that there's power in numbers. If 500 people are doing only 2,000 WCG points/day, that's a million points total.

We're now the 14th largest team. A few weeks ago we were ranked 23rd.
Hello :) I thought I'd join the team as well.
I installed the Boinc manager... But now what? Let the computer idle and let the Boinc manager do it's thing?
Yes, just let BOINC do its thing. Your computer will run at 100% load, but it should not prevent you from using it for other things.
Anyone know how many points a core 2 quad at 2.5 should turn out?
OK cool :)
So now I can go drink beer and cure cancer at the same time :D This software is awesome!
Each completed work unit that's sent back has to be validated. You should get a better idea of your daily point average 2-3 days from now.
Some of the variables for using one's PC/Laptop while running Boinc/WCG.
If you have a decent amount of system RAM.
A decent speed CPU. Quads are more ideal but you can still work with a dual core.
Over all age and use of the PC.
If the PC is an older machine, especially if lesser then current avg ram and depending on the use (applications/programs running) it may cause the system to slow down but the options can be set so that if you are using your machine it will set BOINC to run in the background and or set the optimal % of CPU/RAM usage so it won't interfere with daily usage.
Net surfing, music, reading, e-mail and probably most video formats won't be affected unless maybe one is on a laptop with a slower/integrated older VGA and the system RAM is shared for video as well as system resources.
If something like that is an issue, set BOINC to run when the PC is idle, work will pick up right where it left off after a short period.
For details, one should read through the settings/options an can fine tune from there.
It is a really user friendly app, though it can be a resource hog when you let it.
It is possible to run BOINC and game depending on the system/RAM/CPU cores and speed.

This is awesome, thanks to everyone that's joined up. I joined in March and even before I fall asleep, I feel a little bit more satisfied when I think about how my PCs will be working all night for good causes.
We should all make a push to add more people from those around us (family, friends, etc.) too!
I'm in :)b

well said :) . a friend of mine is crunching with my user and has 2 rigs running the our projecy : 3 core and a 2 core . they do not run 24/7 but I think they do 12/7 which also helps quite a lot

Added a few more rigs to my effort. I haven't turned in any WUs yet (are they called WUs in WCG too?)
On my i7 rig, it is running 8 different WUs at once, but it isn't taking 100% of my CPU all the time. Is there setting that I'm missing or is this normal?
Go to Advanced/Preferences and then on the processor usage tab change to 100% for cpu time and cpu usage.

Make sure you have these settings.

I'm a little late to the game, and I'm only running one of the three rigs I wanted to :C
I will try to get the other two running by the evening, EST. After I saw the advanced interface I found a new addiction to replace F@H.... :S
Ah, I just saw this! :D
Thanks. I'll be sticking around. Is this where people get pie? Or is that a private ranking? I want it all now. Om-nom-nom-nom-NOM.
But seriously, I want pie, which is good, but bad, but good. I'm going to go broke-er.
Alright teammates, I am sorry to let you down. My main cruncher that has been infected with a rogue program. It's a fake virus scanner thats called Security Tool that literally blocks off every program which tries to open, that means BOINC is blocked. It seriously bugs me, it is now 11 at night and I have a track meet tomorrow at 7. I will have to wake up at 5.
There will be some downtime and we might lose some point. Not saying that I am a big-producer, but everything counts.
I will now squeeze in last bits of my brain juice, as I've been exhausted from average of 4 hours of sleep everyday for this 2 weeks. I will attempt to fix this piece of :banana::banana::banana: in 1-2 hours. Wish me luck.
Ha! It was tough but I finished that S.O.B. virus. It took me a while to get rid of it as the rogueware even blocked out task manager, but everything is done. My cruncher is up and alive again:up:
damn dude, you really are a trooper! I know this thread is a thanks to new members, and sincerely thanks to all of you btw, but I want to say thanks as well for doing things like this. Its people like you, dave, jcool, dak etc that really make this team the "best in the world!"
I used to crunch a while back(us MJ12'ers are in a league of our own :hehe:) but I've thrown my Q6600 back on BOINC to add to the fire :)
one stupid question
is there any difference if i use 6GB of ram instead of 12GB?
Yeah ... about 6GB. ;)
For crunching purposes, no. 6GB is more than enough even on a 12 threaded machine.
i have 16 threads :)
It should still be fine. Some units don't use much RAM at all, say 10MB. Others are much larger but on average 6GB will be plenty.
nice any other secrets for tunning griding pcs???
Fastest tune up is to use these settings:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...3&d=1272495172
More in next post.
ATI users cant use grid??because my client grid doesnt show the GPU settings. i could put my VGA's too
After that there's things you can do in terms of tuning your system, like stopping unnecessary system processes, getting rid of unused apps in your task bar (digital camera software is terrible for sticking around and wasting RAM and CPU cycles) also set your screen saver to either "blank screen" or "off". Pretty much shut down anything that takes cycles away from the WCG applications.
RAM speed and HDD speed are close to irrelevant, generally. Don't bother buying high speed ram/HDDs for a cruncher, it's wasted money. So long as you have enough RAM that you don't need to page out to the HDD you're golden.
After you've got all that right, you might MIGHT want to consider looking at your individual machine's performance on different types of work units. Different machines tend to do better on different projects, but the difference isn't huge.
belive me HDD speed is not a problem! my reading speed is very close to Ram speeds of a dual channel pc ;)
no problems with HDD cpu usage cause of a Raid controller and no problems with loosing cycles i think :S
With all the added ppd's from the newcomers like me, how much has the ppd of the XS team increased % ?
Just curiosity for what joined power can do when there's a good purpose....
Thanx
well add another member, just in time I guess (typical). Atm I'm 90-100% crunching with:
Phenom II X6 1055T @ 4Ghz
Phenom II X4 965 @ 3.8
Athlon II X4 @ 2.6
Tommorow i'll get a couple more machines on board too.
Both the PPD and results per day have approximately doubled in the last month:

tuesday i should have another rig to add to the Supercomputer.
it will also depend on when i get my second monitor though.
my current i7-920 setup is crunching at 4.2Ghz DDR3-1600 6-9-6-21
dont know how well my new setup will OC? if i'm able to use it on tuesday
i'll just run it at stock the remainder of the Supercomputer crunch week.
heres what i'll be adding.
Intel Core i7-870 w/HT on @ 2.93GHz
Gigabyte P55A-UD7
8GB Corsair DOMINATOR DDR3-1600 CL8
Gigabyte Radeon HD 5870 1GB
so i will be in for 16 threads total. i hope i get my monitor to really
help with pushing us to reach Dave's goal for the week:up:
There are a couple of projects that will validate results faster - FAAH and HFCC - both have single member quorums, so you don't have to wait for another person to complete crunching the same work unit.

Chucked my rig back on, having not crunched since D2OL/DIMES days (Hence the custom title). It's on as much as my 'leccy bill can cope with, and will be unless I forget to reinstall after an F&R... again...
My new X6 is crunching all day and night now
(and it's of course OC'ed)
