No problem, hope it helps!
To my knowledge when a WU completes it sends the data off to the respective projects immediately, however it does not report it completed to the wcg scheduling servers right away. It only reports to them a few times a day to get new WU's. When you hit "update" that's what you're actually doing.
Adding the quad core really picked up my results/day

I've found that when using BAM to control BOINC the finished units are uploaded more consistently?
Although I'm not really comfortable with BAM yet, keep thinking I may have one of those setting wrong.
My stats are not very consistent yesterday only got 2400 points and I was at work all day? 5600 points so far today since activating BAM and I've been using the computer for some minor tasks. Not very good numbers for a 4 Ghz i7-920 and Dual Core e7400.
Of course stones, milestones
John
Joined up yesterday.... glad to help
WZ
An i7-920 @ 4GHz should generate at least 30,000 WCG points/day (approx. 4,285 BOINC). So if you have 5,600 BOINC points, that's very good.
In some cases, work units are not taken in right away because the servers are either down or offline for maintenance.
You can generally increase the frequency of completed work units being taken in by making an adjustment in your Device Profiles. Under "Workunit Cache Settings" set "Connect to network about every" to 0.1. See if that helps.
Thanks sierra_bound, I've got it setup to update .1 days and 1 day of work (although BAM is controlling now).
This is only my second weekend of running BOINC but it seems the unit transfer "issue?" seems to happen on weekends (maint. time?).
I've set BAM to update every 4 hours and so far that seems to be working well.
Thanks for letting me know what my normal points should be, hoping to see more consistency now that BAM is controlling things!
Your a GREAT help my friend, thanks.
Gotta get my new case setup and ready to go today so that when the new i7-860 rig arrives I can just pop in the mobo/CPU and start crunching. Running 6 gigs of RAM in each machine should should be sufficient on x64 systems, right?
The upcoming week is hell week ( 6x12 hr shifts in 7 days) and she has to be crunching by Friday !!! :)
Biggest issue to date, keeping the temperature down in my home office! Dust everywhere as I have to leave the window open and we've had howling winds :(
John
Heat during summer is always an issue. Where I live, the temperature sometimes goes above 100F (38C). It gets very warm in my computer room at home.
During the weekends, the work unit validation process often slows down. Could be maintenance-related. A computer does the validation work. Team numbers are often lower on weekends, especially for corporate teams because a lot of work computers have probably been turned off.
@sierra_bound: I like those settings. I've updated mine as well. I can see the benefit of having 3 days worth of work, just in case that host isnt connected to the internet, it can still crunch.
Some long-term members keep a 2-3 day cache of work units in case the servers should be down for an extended period of time. That happened several years ago.
Even though BOINC is always connected to the servers, the line only opens up at specific intervals. You can adjust the length of those intervals with that setting in Device Profiles.
I've posted a separate thread on this. But thought it might be worth mentioning here. The Human Proteome 2 project has been known to cause errors. I would suggest unchecking it in your Device Profiles section, unless you are not getting errors.

Can some one shed some light on this?
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/5340/capturepmt.png
It doesn't want to get new tasks even though it's out
Make sure you didn't accidentally select "No new tasks" in the Projects tab.
Thanks for reply but that was the first thing I checked, even toggled it to see if that would "unstick" it.
If I'm lucky it'll reset when the WCG updates like it did last time, not sure why that keeps happening to this system though.
Are you getting a lot of errors from that system perhaps? I would expect to see a message about quota, but just the same it's worth looking.
this might sound like a stupid question but if i ran my i7@3.6ghz 24/7 is there anyway of telling how long it will last using wcg with 100% load im only using 1.15v on the cpu max temp 65c and i think 1.26v qpi and 1.2v vtt
i cant remember at the mo have not gone into bios to check it out
ps i think i have put in 6 days of wcg so far
Points Generated (Rank) 24,838 (#280,794) but its not been on for 6 days solid i dont know how it works but thats what it says
thanks
Hello all. Is it wise to check all projects when you are logged into WCG in your profile? Or are you guys going to be focusing on only certain types of projects? For me I have SETI going and i have WCG projects all checked, thanks.
Some people have had problems with the Human Promteome 2 project.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=250673
When you register at WCG, you are given all the main projects by default. Some people here prefer to run just one or two projects.
This is a look at the projects our team has run or is running. The two most popular ones are Help Conquer Cancer and FightAIDS@Home. Some of the projects you see listed below have been completed and are no longer available.
wow i realy dont want to know about the electric bills (huge)
i cant beleve there is peapole on here that just use the pc just to crunch all the time i only have 1 rig so if i want to play games on it i have to stop wcg otherwist my games run really bad
but none the less i will be crunching if im downloading or just browsing the net :)
happy crunching
Yes, my electricity bills are high. But I can afford it. Some people donate to charity every month. I donate my time and money to science and the utility company.:D
Some of the people in my neighborhood have very big homes. If you ask them about their power bills, they just roll their eyes. It's even worse for people with swimming pools. Heating and maintaining a pool will really drive up your power bill.
that it true if you can do it then do it i wish i lived in a better country i really hate the uk everything is just so expencive
just as example my cpu,cpu cooler, motherbord and memory cost me a little over £600 converting it in to dollers that will set you back $1200
but if you bught it in america it will be $600
its stupid thay bring something out and all thay do it change the currancy from $ to £ at the end of the day it cost me 2x the ammout you can get it for
in america so annoying
sorry im rambling :) you have to smile dont you at the end of the day
Not everyone has such a high opinion of America.:D I lived and worked in London for a year, so I know how expensive things are in the UK, especially in that city. Half my paycheck went to taxes. But I had a great time while I was there.:)
I finally bumped up the CPU utilization to 100%. Should see a slight increase from me.
cool so you have traveld alot then im happy that you agree and the tax is getting worse now to be honnest your better of on job seakers now thats how bad it is
where would you prefer to live america or the uk that is the question
ps its nice to know there is some peapole out there that chats about other things not just pc stuff :)
I was in my 20's when I lived in England. London is a great place for young people. I'm much older now.:) I think the country I would most like to live in is Italy. My wife and I visited Tuscany about six years ago. We both agree that we would love to retire there. The country looks ageless. Italy has its fair share of problems, just like everywhere else. But there's a lot more to like than to not like.
Any reasons why i still have "pending validation" units from 19th of April? Is it normal? And noticed two "inconclusive" units as well... Any thoughts??
It can sometimes take a week or longer for a work unit to be validated. Let's suppose the same work unit is sent out to two computers. Your computer finishes the work unit and sends it in. The second computer may have gotten an error, in which case the same work unit has to be sent out to another computer. That's how the validation process works.
BOINC uses a quorum system to validate work units. Each project has a different quorum size. Let's suppose it's a quorum of three, meaning three identical work units are sent out to computers. When they are returned, the validation program examines all three. If the results for all three work units look the same, then all three computers will get credit. But if one result looks a lot different than the other two, it is called invalid and thrown out. If all three work units look different, then the results are called "inconclusive" and three more identical work units are sent out to computers.
Hey Sierra_Bound,
Maybe you should post this on the front page with all the other help items you have, or at least a link to the thread. It might help for newcomers like myself to understand the BOINC results a little more.
I found it here https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.or...ad_thread,6105 at the WCG forums.
Quote:
•Work In Progress - This means that one of your computers is currently working on it
•Aborted - has 2 prefixes, Server Aborted and User Aborted for canceled jobs before or during running. Server Aborted reflects the Server side instructed cancellations telling the client to automatically abort redundant or known bad tasks. Latter only happens when the client has contacted the project servers who set such an instruction ready.
•Detached - When a newer client gets dis-associated from this project with tasks still in the cache, will a message be send to the servers to ensure that these tasks get quickly redistributed. With older clients this would not happen and task copies would not get send until the "No Reply" condition occurred.
•Error - Some event occurred to keep the result from finishing properly. This could be due to a BOINC error or a science application error.
•No Reply - The result was not returned to the server by the time it was due.
•Pending Validation - The result was returned to the server but there have not been enough results for that workunit returned to the server yet for validation to be attempted
•Valid - The result was returned to the server and was equal to the majority of results returned for the workunit.
•Invalid - The result was returned to the server and was not found to be equal to the majority of results returned for the workunit.
•Inconclusive - The result was returned to the server and validation was attempted but the system could not determine which result(s) it should consider to be valid. New results were sent out for this workunit and validation will be attempted again when those results are returned. Additionally, for the Zero Redundancy projects one or more results are at times randomly marked Inconclusive to force out an additional copy for computation and verification. Clients which produced an invalid/error result will see this more frequent until the reliability rate has returned to high standard.
•Too Late - The result was returned to the server a long time after it was due and so no credit was granted.
•Other - The most common reason for this status is that the BOINC server decided that the workunit should be sent out to another computer but prior to the workunit actually being sent again, the workunit was validated.
•Waiting to sent - A transient condition when not all copies of a Initial distribution have been downloaded by volunteer clients. Seen also when a project has been temporarily stopped.
Will do.:)
Another n00b question (or maybe busy guy - i'm writing up my phd thesis right now:cool:): can i download workunits on one computer and transfer them (usb stick) to another PC not connected to the network...??? Then compute them, "ready to report" back on usb stick and to network connected machine?
In other words: if BOINC client can work in off-line mode?
Okay so this is my first time seeing this I just got 5 high priority tasks that bumped other WU's whats that all about? Maybe WCG is starting to realize the computing power XS's has :p:
That will happen from time to time on most computers. Sometimes WCG inserts a batch of work units with shorter deadlines that it wants finished as soon as possible.
So I read another post about points bonus if returned in under 24 hours? Is this true? If so, wouldn't a workload cache (work buffer) of >1day cause you never to get the bonus?
Hi
Im absolutly noob to this, running my e6750 @ 3,2G. Did some testruns and now want to join the supercomputer week.
I am NOT listet on the XS Individual Stats, what am i doing wrong????
Here is my stat page: http://allprojectstats.com/showuser....t=0&id=2023831
Position in team - out of 2,286 ?!?
Thanks
Go here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/te...mId=69B8364XP1 and click "Join This Team" (or just click here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms...mId=69B8364XP1 )
Yes this is for XtremeSystems :P
Edit: Ok, from what I've just seen you've already done that. You're now at the mercy of the validation system. Your stats won't show up on the team page till at least about 0100hrs UTC tomorrow after the team stats run completes. It can take a couple of days to really get rolling with this project.
Check my edit, it might be relevant.
Guys, as I'm fairly new to Boinc: I didn't check that protected app execution, when installing Boinc, initially. So boinc doesn't run as a service.
Any way to correct that w/o reinstalling? Or can I just re-install over the existing install without loosing the work and settings?
Tnx
I would recommend uninstalling BOINC, but saving the folder containing the BOINC work units. It's probably in a sub-folder called "projects". When you reinstall BOINC, delete the new sub-folder and replace it with the one you saved.
i accidently hit the update button on the projects page of boinc manager
and now my 16 units that were in waiting to send status are now gone.
did i lose them by hitting the update button,or did they just get sent
to be validated?
ok thanks, thats what i was hoping happened.
Not lost at all. In fact that would have happened eventually anyway. BOINC finishes a WU and uploads the results but then there is a seperate step to report that you did upload it (the files go to one place and the notification that the upload has been done goes to another). The second step second step is a heavy process for the server on the other end they have BOINC set up to report them in batches (it is just a heavy if reporting 1 as it is for reporting 10). It does the reporting when your machine asks for more WUs or it automatically happens within 24 hours of the original WU due date, which ever comes first. There is no real harm in pushing the update button.
Also change your settings in your WCG profile to update more often so you don't get a huge backlog:
My Grid | Device Manager | Device Profiles | Default [if you haven't set any] | Workunit Cache Settings:
Change the "Connect to network about every" to .1 or something lower than what you have now.
Snow Crash, well thats what i thought happened.after i hit the update,i checked my stats and they werent there
thats why i paniced and asked if i lost them.but its good to know i can safely push the update button.thanks
retro77,yes,i did that before i hit the update button, after reading a thread about how to change settings.thanks
Sierra_bound,
That, apparently, doesn't work. It seems whichever way you try it, your config is partially toast, and at the very least, all work in progress is lost for mankind...
So for now, I reverted to the non-service mode.Depending on the time I have, I'll uninstall Boinc altogether in a week, or then try to figure out a way to do this (there was no way to connect the manager to the service on the localhost).
Not really a good design that the service is not the default install mode, I would say...
Are you using an older BOINC client? I think the newer ones operate only in service mode.
The new ones can be installed in either mode, service or user. I just finished building my 2nd quad, and it has the latest and greatest. I've always installed my in user mode, but that's cause I've never had that option till of late.
I've seen 'older' versions have the issue CeSinge is having, and also the new ones on my old P4. The only real fix I know is to nuke the entire install and folder structure and reload. I've had a copy and rename work I've also had it fail. Wish I had better advice.
As for the questions about hitting update early - I do it all the time... the only rig I have constant access is this lappy, the others are remote depending on where I am. I 'force' updates with no loss of Wu's or points and have for a few years. The tasks reporting 100% will go in to the pending validation or valid depending on the age of the Wu. So no worries there.
Hope this was of some help,
Rick
Sounds like a silly question but how can I verify that I'm actually running the 64 bit client?
Downloaded what was said to be the 64bit client. However the file downloaded is titled "boinc_6.10.45_windows_x86_64" I've looked at the services running which shows BOINC running in the system32 folder. "About in help" doesn't say anything about a 64 or 32 bit client ?
Also my new i7 860 doesn't appear to work as fast as the 920 ( 200 mhz seed difference) however I'm using the "stable " version of the client instead of the beta. Can I just re-install the beta over the stable client without loosing everything? Running both as a service.
Thanks
John
I'm not fine
I'm just freaking after seeing the new rig down for over 24 hrs !!!
My remote machine is acting weird, just hooked a monitor KB and found it is processing tasks at the bottom of the list and stopped a task running at the top of the list?
I need to contribute all the points I can for the challenge and find myself concerned about my setups lol
I feel like I'm running a marathon or something really competitive, who knew crunching on short notice could be so stressful :hitself:
John
John, blow that out and install BOINC 6.10.18
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php
The BOINC client is a wrapper that handles the benchmarking, scheduling and a few other things and provides a framework for the science applications. At WCG all the science applications are 32bit. The 64bit BOINC client is worth running if you have the hardware, but if you hunt around in your task manager you will see 32bit stuff happening. That's completely normal.
6.10.43, 32b on XP.
I read that somewhere too, but it's clear that nothing happens until I start the manager (and there is no Boinc service installed anyway). When installing, you have to manually click advanced to activate it. The 'service' setting is dimmed, but disabled by default.
I think I'll leave it as such for this week, because I was overtaken by too many today... and that's more stress than trying to fix the problem... :p:
Yes, just leave it as is for this week.
Just an FYI, 6.10.43 was taken off the recommended list at the BOINC site because it has a bug in it. The bug mainly affects those who are also using their GPU for other projects. 6.10.18 is now the recommended client for Windows users.
Tnx for the info. I don't use the GPU (I saw the 8800GTX is not supported for this.) Next week I'll try: rename the AD\Boinc dir; uninstall; restore the AD\Boinc dir. What I did was to restore the dir after having reinstalled. Possibly, if I install with that dir still there, it will realize it and use what's in there.
Fortunately (for crunching), the weather is cool this week, so it doesn't overheat my room too much. I'm one of those guys who'd want the CPU % to be inversely linked to my room temp...! Allows for green crunching: the CPU would run 100% until the room is at 73 degrees, then throttle accordingly....:)
Hello everybody, I just joined to help.
Regards from Argentina!!
Welcome and thanks for helping.:)
i just checked my current running WU's and just noticed they say "running, high Priority"
before they just said "running".is there a reason it changed?
"High priority" means the deadline is approaching. BOINC always crunches first the work units with the nearest deadlines.
ok thanks.that makes sense.it just alarmed me at first, thought to myself "thats new".
Anyone know of a thread where people list points based on the CPU they are running?
I'm curious to see what others are getting for points on lets say a 3.9Mhz i7-920. My results are all over the map 3000-7400 WCG points a day and I'm not sure why. Obviously some of that is due to using the computer while crunching, but for the most part I've left the machine alone.
Oh, and which point site best represents a persons position in the team, WCG and country? On Boinc stats my Extreme ranking is 593 out of 2235 and on Free-DC listed as 458 with no total.
TIA
John
Some of the stats sites don't update at the same time of day as WCG and it causes them to count more updates in one day than another. If you're getting a every other day pattern, this is most likely the cause.
The only other thing I can think of is a coincidence on when you have quorum 1 tasks that validate instantly and when your wingman validates on other projects...
According to BOINCstats, you are ranked 458th on the team and 1,612th in Canada.
http://boincstats.com/stats/user_gra...=wcg&id=681494
I wouldn't worry about the daily point fluctuations. Use RAC (recent average credit) to get a better idea of what your machine is doing. I have one machine that can do 56,000 WCG points one day and 40,000 the next. It's just the validation process which varies from day to day.
Thanks very much for the replies, it helps.
And BTW the dedication you peeps show in helping our community so they can help others is VERY ADMIRABLE !
John
I joined in the effort tonight with my rig. I've got 4 more comps in the house I'll put online tomorrow afternoon.
Welcome to the team! :welcome:
Anyone noticed that number of "pending validation" units is reduced? In my case by half. Some leprechauns over there are doing really good job, especially during this special week:up:
Try this page... http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?p...cg&name=682135
I use both sites but as the team stats tend to use Free-DC most.
All right I have 4 of the computers up and running now. I've got to work on the 5th. ;)
Down to 3 - one of my quads has a sad face ATM............... :(
Edit...... more than sad face - more like 'magic smoke got out of PSU face'
ruh roh :shakes:
Rut Roh .......... LOL, Me go by Frys tomorrow and get a new one. Twas a donor rig, so I figured to have issues with it. Beggars can't be choosers :)
I am running a 4.3GHz 980x rig and it crunches like a demon, however im a bit confused about the points that it generates.
When i look up the stats for it right now, it shows the last results returned on the 4th May, which is yesterday UMT. When i saw that i thought i had better check if it had crashed so tonight i check and its still buzzing along splendidly, and i actually watched it uploading a result or two in action.
When i check the Tasks list i find gazzillions of completed tasks at "Ready to Report" status, but these dont seem to be regestering in WCG stats and are certainly not on "Pending Validation" or similar on the website.
Anyone know whats up?
My other machines are working fine and reporting last results from today, just that one machine...
Cheers, worked a treat and i should see a big day's result in the morning :)
Finally got the last piece for my I7 rig but I need to take down my current rig to set it up
problem is what is the best way to migrate boinc to the new set up without losing any wu's ?
Essentially you can't as far as I know unless the new system will work with all the same drivers,etc..IE:no format needed.
You can just do a "user abort" on the remaining undone work in your queue and start over on the new system.
Now since you already have an account all you'll need to do on the new system is install boinc and when it asks for name and password just use the same ones and all is done.
If you're crunching on Linux (which odds are against, but still) and you're running the generic kernel then the system will just pic up where it left off. You might need to reconfigure the video drivers, but that's it. If you're running something as heavily customised as mine then not so much, but the BOINC folder (if you downloaded it from Berkley) can just be lifted from one machine to another without issue (so long as it's the same architecture ie 32 or 64bit)
ok, i have 3 inconclusive results for HFCC in the past two days on one machine, and I read the OP on this thread and I'm not sure if 3 times in two days counts as "occasionally". Should I be worried?
Unless those inconclusives turn into errors I wouldn't be too concerned, and even then not if they didn't cost you a bunch of time. If you KEEP getting incons or errors then you might have an issue.
I have quit HFCC last night as one of my 980x rigs returns error every time on it, but passes all other fine.
Quick question, yesterday around this time of day I made a post to the Milestones thread and stuck Free-DC's stat's tag. in my post . 24 hours later Free-DC and BOINC Stats show the exact same totals as yesterday even though I've been crunching? Both sites tell me I've added points but nothing has gone towards the total points? WCG is accurate though???
http://stats.free-dc.org/projusertag...81494&theme=17
The above is exactly the same as yesterday?
John
I've noticed lags in both sites, before as well. For just straight WCG runs I use WCG only. The others will catchup on it. When I'm running something else I usually use Bonic Stats.
Rick
It's not ignorance, it's learning..........
My last few work units from one of my crunchers have vanished, checked every category under results status but they're not there  One of them was a 20 hour WU too :(
The results status list doesn't update in real time. Give it at least 12 hours to be sure.
