it's not LOD
it's the driver
I used LOD in my runs too hehehe

This is about the last week guys, very quiet in here :(
When I'm back from Taipei I'll see what I can do with my crap card :p
well I've finally got my mounting sorted for the pot to fit onto the 8600GT so hopefully I'll get it insulated and ready to party by Wednesday. Of course knowing my luck it'll cold bug immediately and bust up my rig at the same time!
It seems like I'll have to pass :( too much work at the university. Shame, because i got a very nice card, Galaxy 8600GE (GT on GTS PCB).
I'm still waiting on LN2, ordering it in about 30 minutes though
Well im out before i have even begun. I sat with it, and getting results like 775core @ 1.83v is just not right. The card was making electrical noise on stock @ 30fps in games. Again, i find that abnormal.
I got a RMA number for it, but by the time it gets there, tested, and a new one back out, this contest will be over. Very dissapointed with the way this contest has gone from myself.
Well, always the next one!
I wish everyone in the contest the very best of luck. May the best person win!

hmmm... Here's a stock clock evga SCC card, no tweaks. I will install xp later to try it oc. Not sure what safe voltages are, I haven't touched the cooling.

common fellas rip it up
compulsory pics of your rigs please
44k 01 at stock. I need to swap cpus for the 8400 and get xp on the array. The x48t in my sig...

Sorry, work has kept me from doing much else than keeping up to date with whats going on.. :(
what about extending it to the middle or end of next month?... seems like everyone has been a little to busy...
I'm thinking this could be needed as well or there is gonna be about 4 of us actually benching here :(
ehhh... pretty weak, I don't care how long you run it. I need to work on this, lol...
http://lakesidepc.com/843d1.jpg
and this too :D
http://lakesidepc.com/843d3.jpg
I agree on lengthening the competition. The competition will run an additional 2 weeks to give those busy benchers 2 additional weekends to cram in some benching. Get on it guys  Updated the 1st post with the new results and updated date. October 15th, 2008 is the final date
wow am i having trouble or what.... needing a format asap....
im at
972mhz/1998mhz/771mhz... Air
e8600 @ 523x9=4.7ghz... Water
03 = 20,2xx..
01 = 50,8xx........ zero tweaks just 2.0 lod and stock sequence.
so i have ALOT of tweaking to do... unless the memory is just bottlenecking that much.. any ideas?
common guys
there is no way you will allow my :banana::banana::banana:house scores to be on top will ya
hmmmm yeah last chipzilla i was benching on then secret 790i chipset
actually i do have a nice little board coming here which will raise some eyebrows when it's released heheheh :D
I Knew It!!!!!
doing a little better.. the memory is just starving my card....:(

Edit: ok here is a little update with my 3d01. i am digging the 007.
clocks
972/2052/783 Air
well that was single handedly the worst nite of benching ever :(
Started off promising running 3DMark01 with 980MHz on the core and 1100MHz on the memory - until both Dragon Low and High decided that they wouldn't run - until I lowered the gpu clock to 900MHz and the memory to 1000MHz -> just scraped 70K and then the save corrupted wahhhey!
Thought I'd give 3DMark03 a try instead - GT1 has become a total pain in the ass! keeps crashing in exactly the same point then the Lancaster bombers colloid and the shot changes to seeing them head on - instant crash. This occurs even when I turn the core down to about 920Mhz and the mem alll the way back to 1000MHz yet the rest of the tests run fine at 950MHz/1100MHz!!!
Cold bug seems to be around -80oC and I've managed to get a OVP problem too - can't go over 1.70v on the core or the card shuts down. Memory being Qimonda means that upping the voltage on them means sweet FA in the way of improved clocks and they have already begun to degrade at stock voltage - 3D03 no longer runs 1.1GHz happy
All round failure this end :(
now that is sad.... johnny :(
well so i thought to myself why not lower the voltage of the memory and test her out... i gained a little bit more stability but i gained nothing as of mhz... stock mem volts are 2.06v i went to 2.4v to 1.87v.
1.96v seemed to be the sweet spot for them. but still not a single mhz gain.. :(
now i need to actually do an order and set lods for 01 and figure out why my 03 is so weak...
come on guys post up some cards on fire!!!
I still wish it was a 9500gt. ;) These are tough cards and I've only got air and it's even tougher when gomeler gets my score wrong :stick: :D No worries, I'm going to try and better those a little, especially that 01... I dunno what I'm doing wrong. Maybe the 790i will oc my e8400 a little better than the x48t? It's starting to get very frosty here at night so I think I can probably squeeze a little more out of some of this stuff. I still haven't taken the stock cooling off the card yet either and I have a duo orb on the shelf and some copper ram sinks. When I was first doing my vmod I busted a tiny resistor off where the mem read point is. I know absolutely nothing about any of this stuff so I'm like ok, no big deal, it'll probably run anyway... wrong answer :ROTF: Now my eyes aren't what they used to be and I shake like a ring of fire aftershock, but I managed to get it reconnected. :D
http://lakesidepc.com/3586.jpg
Oh yeah, I remembered what I wanted to ask now. About voltages, how much can I use? I think I tried like 1.48v gpu and 2.05v mem but as I said I still haven't removed stock cooling, even to look underneath it.
It's a case of contact area - Volterra do make them with different surface areas, Blackops has big ones, abit did not. Problem is if they are not implemented well, abit on early boards had a flaw were if one of the ICs overheated it would shutdown, however this meant the other 4 had to take up the slack -> they got hotter -> shutdown cascade. If it's done well then they should run pretty well, and hopefully the cooling solution is well made *read braced underneath* as contact is everything with these parts.
Thanks for the tip Bong ;) Managed to up my 03 score a little  I put around 1.64vgpu and 2.09vmem.
http://lakesidepc.com/038684.JPG
cant quite see your clocks... what are they?
lol... I didn't realize they were covered. 939/1030. I'm going to rerun that too, I want to try experimenting with drivers because my 01 still sucks :(
This is the cooling I put on last night...
http://lakesidepc.com/3605.jpg
http://lakesidepc.com/3611.jpg
And an 03 run I did playing around before I swapped out the q9650...
http://lakesidepc.com/038696504_1.jpg If I had better cooling I wouldn't even bother with the e8400 but I can't get this q9650 over 4.3ghz
Will update the scores tomorrow. I've been a terrible host :( Keep on pushing it, 1GHz core is calling your name.
Got a heatsink rigged up today, just have to mount it.. and dig out my VR's.
Would have done that as well but I got sidetracked working on my 8800GTS...
guys how do i mod the RAM to reduce the volts to try improve clocks
i'm back benching the card on air
What's the lowest yours will go Dinos? Mine are like 1.97v
you can mod the potential divider Dinos normally we vary the resistance between the divider setpoint and ground - if the vary the resistance between the divider setpoint and the memory voltage you can effectively decrease the voltage.
btw my air benching seems to be producing similar results
985/2160/848
about 90% stable but doable heheheh......
don't joke I'm moving from LN2 to water - think the Qimonda chips don't like the cold as I can't clock anywhere near what I had under the chill :(
i dont think its the cold but voltage
it's :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing odd
ok so it seems 1.74v load is max i can give it
i am at 972/2106/848
lobbies are giving me issues with voltage
holy smokes
390FPS CH with 169.21 drivers eeek
damn you! I cant get higher than 1.71 volts or the card cuts out!
Time to put a fire under your ass with some bad ass results me thinks :D
Strange the lobbies are giving you issues as it was dragothic low and high for me
they can run higher but lobbies will cut out
i've tested 1.8v nature loaded
RAM is killing me
but i also must be messing up my LOD for Dragons
they are weak
well I was running 980 core 1100 memory on all except dragothic, which had to nosedive down to 920/1050. That put me a 69k but I'm certain if I can get dragothic to play ball I'll be smoking past 71k ;)
i got no chance with you
i just spent a few hours on this damn card
i'm sick of it and wont bench the bastard any more
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/9...164056pxa4.png
Dinos you try the 169.09 drivers?
i was thinking about them seeing some big numbers on HWBOT but i am tired of that asswipe card to be honest
Get a chance to play 3DMark03 - I blew at it, GT1 culled my core clocks no end and GT2 was pretty picky about the memory speed :(
Nice one dinos
I tried some Cas 4 1:1 on RE, not working. EP45T looks pretty good for that ;)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/canny/61883.jpg
your file host isnt working
you really should use imageshack and ff3
no popups ;) and images never go down even after years of hosting
Uploaded to wrong album ;)
Imageshack...you've got to be kidding lol.
ive seen your remarks about it in the past but seriously that host you use sucks
have a look at threads 2 years ago with ppl using that host and imageshack and see what the ratio is of working pics :D
your card is a dog too
ram wise i mean :(
Ram sucks but I can run 1000 core on air :D
180L delivered.. insulating up a board and trying to figure out how to clamp a GPU tube to this little card
I may have some pics that will help you out here Gomeler - watch this space....
hmmm... still pretty weak but a definite improvement...
http://lakesidepc.com/0184861.JPG
You need LOD ;)
damn
that driver is pretty good...or is it his RAM running at such speed...i think it might be dragons liking RAM actually
http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/8...reen003pd9.jpg
Stretch my legs ;)
First Attempt
http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/7...reen009bl8.jpg
Running 1.68 on the core 2.2 volts on the memory - gpu is cooled to -75oC with LN2 as the cold bug seems to be vaguely about -80oC.
Everything runs fine at the clocks reported except Dragothic low and high - with cut out at random stages of the bench. Only way to get around it is to reduce the clocks heavily on those benches :(
http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/2...reen010cv8.jpg
Clocks in this image are the ones I had to use for Dragothic - how crap is that!
3DMark03 just threw more confusion into the mix - GT1 always crashing at the exact same point but GT2,3 and 4 seem to be able to run the clocks flawlessly :shakes:
Nuts to it I went to bed by that stage....
First Attempt
Having read what a few of you guys had been doing - and seeing how most of you were hitting in the high/high 900's on the core with air I began to wonder just how effective my more extreme cooling was really being....
...turns out it's not that good at all
running the pot at approximately -20oC instantly solved my dragothic issues?! Plus the same clocks I'd been using for the past week with -80oC could be achieved with about -20/-25oC on the core - what a joke! I soon found out that going lower than -30oC caused all sorts of problems with the memory and the core. I'm wondering if the IMC on the gpu is really cold bugged?
By this stage my memory was starting to give though - 1.2GHz was a flight of fancy and benching at the clocks below wasn't exactly plain sailing - car chase low had started to randomly crash (which is f'ing annoying when it's the last one you run and you know that your other times are good!)
But I managed to pull this out of the bag with one crazy ass running order :D LH-N-DH-LL-DL-CH-CL
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/7...reen017qw0.jpg
LL is about 20fps off what I've had it at which was annoying - and car chase low is about 10fps off too but then it was playing silly buggers and I didn't want to chance it screwing up the show.
Final voltages had 1.68volts on the core (OVP limited) and 2.16volts on the mem (bigger volts != bigger clocks with Qimonda) nothing exotic was done with the board but I'm pondering trying to find the voltage controller datasheet for the gpu core so I can disable the OVP and drop some real volts on the core.
http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/5...reen019bz6.jpg
Similar story for 3DMark03 - up the temps and the problems go away. In fact for 3D03 I was mostly running at about -19oC to get GT1 to complete without fail - go figure.
I've come to the conclusion that if you had a good chiller and a decent water block you'd be landed as far as cooling is concerned for these cards - they just get too wired after you pass -30oC
I'm gonna mount my Swiftech shortly and see if I can do better more ambient temperatures :D
nice going indeed
holy moly!!!!!!!!:shocked: i cant compete with that memory even a little bit. great runs mon!!!:yepp::p::):D;)
try to use that other driver i used initially for '05
i could not match my '05 runs for some reason even though i was a lot faster on CPU and faster on GFX card
must be the driver   or my card was unstable
that the 175 one Dinos?
yeah give them a shot
I really don't know much about benching but I still like to play and learn. I played around with lod some and I think that last run was when I settled on 11 or 12. My e8400 will no way go over 4.5ghz here on air so I think I need to settle for what I got although I'll probably try one last hoorah this weekend. :D
okay..... this is the last day to bench right? all i know is next round im looking into the memory more then anything.. :yepp:
Yup, today is the last day unless you guys want another extension :D Going to sift through this thread and compile all the scores as I've been a lazy/busy host.

Congrats guys! Unless we plan on continuing this Challenge, these are our final results. Judging by the results it looks like we've all been quite busy. Feel free to keep submitting scores and I can continue updating the results but for the extended duration of the competition these are the final results.
Wish I thought I could get a little more but I'm not so sure. This was fun, thanks.
my '01 score was in normal category (edit-CPU subzero though whoops hehe)
the '03 was subzero :)
I'll try to play around with my card tomorrow for schnitzel and giggles. Feel bad buying the card and not even modding it yet. Stupid busy life :(
When's the next challenge then? ;)
It took me literally 40 minutes to find damn mythical thread!
I kept searching for 8400GS instead of 7200GS. Looked in the WCG Forums, Xtreme Overclocking forums, browsed my post history.. Ugh
If someone wants to organize a Spring challenge I'm sure some people would participate. I currently am still swamped with school and work
How about we join the red camp for one competition? - and go a little old school :D
X1800 XT
X850 XT
for cheapness we can go for a 2600 XT or Pro model
What do you guys think?
Yes lets, X1800 would be good, I still have one.
2600 PRO
2600 XT
Actually, I would go for any card - just get ourselves together and start this already :)
i would go for anything with gddr3+ and yea i am fiending for some action as well..
:yepp::up::cool::D;)
Thats strange, cause i was actually looking at making a new thread about this, lol. Was even looking at card, and figured it's time we went ATI!
Looking around, i figured something like a HD 4550 would be cool, or older, like x1800/1900.
Same as someone else said, would like to run on some GDDR3 this time around. I shall check UK for X1800 and X1900's, bu Hd 4550's are readily available. down side is 64-bit bus. upside, GDDR3. anyways, more choice then a poll like last time! :D
- paul
I wanna stay clear of smaller bus speeds as it puts the emphasis on the memory rather than the core. Shall we start a new thread for the spring 2009 Cheapzilla challenge?
Yes, start a new thread and set a poll up.
I think we should go with HD2600XT - it comes in DDR3 version.
resurrecting this thread!!!
lets get something going guys!!! 4 months left of 2009!:yepp::p::cool::D
perhaps 4670's or 9500 gt's?
Sounds good. i could do with something fun to do in this department :P. Also have a QX9650 @ 3.8ghz now days which means i got a little more cpu power. shame the IX38 can;t keep up though...
back to topic, hmmm. HD2600 is a bit old. 9500GT is basically a 8600GT again. HD4670 i think would be fun, or if people could stretch to the budget, a HD4730, but that is like £70 and not the £40 region were used to. But come on. 128-bit with GDDR5 haha.
maybe everyone can come up with a different card idea but heres my idea
HD 3850 256/512/1024MB
why?
1) 256-bit + GDDR3
2) 668MHz core (HD3870 managed 1Ghz+)
3) Different PCB layouts and PWM areas
Ontop of that a quick check in the UK shows we can get them for £45 - £50 in some cases. readily available. Anyway open to other ideas too.
- Paul
I'm all in. Just name the card :D
HD 3850 would be fun but hard to find them for under $100USD here in the States. The HD4650 is 128-bit GDDR2 for $50 while the HD4670 is 128-bit GDDR3 for $60-70. I think the HD4650 is ideal as it is the cheapest 128-bit card I could see that is also heavily available. Guess a new thread is needed with a poll.
edit: Let's get a few more suggestions first though and then once we have all ideas considered we can fire up a poll.
Make it cheap, make it all DDR2 or 3, make it fun.
I'm in no matter what :-)
Edit: 4650 GDDR2 looks to be a good price point.
I'm in for 4650 GDDR2 or probably any other card for that matter
looking forward to this
Chris, would you be willing to start up a new thread for this? I like the 9500gt but I could live with ati. Those 4670 look like lotta fun.
lets do eeeeeeeeet hehehe
Are there any other GPU suggestions besides the 9500GT, HD 3850, HD 4670, and HD 4650? I'll whip up a poll in the AM with suggestions and a "I forgot to post my choice" option.
