Title: [Computex08] RoG X48/P45 boards at ASUS
I have a Q9450 on a Rampage Formula and I was reading that most X48 boards top out at 480 fsb after being tweaked. I have mine running at 487 fsb and after never truly learning how to tweak voltages with my E6600 and Striker Extreme, I'm having alot of trouble breaking past this.
Here are the voltages
CPU - 1.25v
CPU PLL - 1.68v
Ram - 1.82v
NB - Auto - 1.68v
I haven't set any other voltages because most of them I've never worked with before. Working on phenoms for the last 6 months didn't help either. I tried setting the fsb to 490 and it didn't load windows, so I upped cpu to 1.3v and nb to 1.71v. It got me into windows once, but it wouldn't run prime at all, actually crashed prime in about 3 minutes. I didn't post this in a new thread because with all the official ones it would probably get lost in the mix.
using latest bios / rampage formula / not ocing / bios at default / system reboots randomly when i go sleep(so its idle) and leave downloads on the bg+msn /
anyone having the same problem do let me know.
using a Q9300 w/ 4gb corsair 800 ram
Getting horribly frustrated with this rampage formula. I'm on my second one, and once again I have the very same cold boot issue.
Here's what I do to create it:
Turn AI Overclock Tuner to manual. Leave everything at auto (or put in stock settings, doesn't matter). Shut down machine normally. Turn power switch off. Turn power switch on. Fans and LCD poster light up, gets to check cpu or cpu init, then shuts off and starts up again. Sometimes it will give overclock failed but not usually. Its almost like the board isn't supplying enough voltage to the cpu to boot up, but I have no idea. My dfi doesn't do this with the same parts. Not sure why I was retarded enough to think an asus product would actually work right.
Parts/bioses I've tried:
corsair dominator 8500s (2x2 gb kits, 1-4 sticks, any slots)
g.skill pc2 8000's (2x2 gb kits, 1-4 sticks, have 6 sticks I've tried, any slots)
Enermax 650 watt psu, corsair 620 watt psu, silverstone decathlon 800 watt psu
e3110, e8400, x3360 cpu's -- all verified to be working
In or out of case -- there is no emi issue
9800 gtx ssc, 8800 gts 512, 7900 gtx
Pretty much all the available bioses I've used
If no settings are touched and the AI overclock tuner is left as auto, it will boot normally. If stock settings for hardware are dialed in or if the setting is just moved to manual with everything else at auto it will NOT cold boot properly. Once that setting is touched, the cold boot issue is present even with nothing but the cpu in the board (not even any fans plugged in). No gpu, led's or anything needs to be plugged in. It is *REALLY* irritating.
Anyone getting this and have fixed it that have done something I haven't already tried? Its not hanging at det-dram so unfortunately the ram doesn't seem to be the issue (god I wish it was).
all ASUS boards beginning from P965 have this "feature" - double start from cold boot when AI Overclock is turned to Manual in Bios. Your board is OK. I also had double starts on Commando, P5K Premium and now on Rampage Formula. This is normal.
well, it's something about programming chipset registers and timings needed to cold boot. Don't know why asus implemented this "feature" while others can do without it.
My NB is idling at 56c ( FSB=400, 1.6v). I applied AS to the heatpipe too, whats a good way to cool it off?
Yes, read here:

Getting some cmos corruption with the rampage formula (and possibly even bios corruption). Essentially after the box has been sitting for several hours cold, I turn it on and get stuck at checkcpu despite being stable for 24 hours (each) of both small ppu and blend priming. It does its normal double boot then comes into a checkcpu error. I bumped voltages some but that didn't seem to help. The cpu is fine, after wrestling with the cmos reset button it will work fine and let me load my previous settings w/o problems. It then boots into windows and is perfectly stable.
Hardware:
xeon x3360 w/TRUE 120
8 gigs corsair dominators ddr2 1066 5-5-5-15 (4x2) @ 1021 mhz
evga 9800 gtx ssc
Here's my settings:
fsb: 425
CPU - 1.33125v (this is a little overkill, but it drops to about 1.25 under load)
CPU PLL - 1.50v
Ram - 2.06v
NB - 1.51
Loadline calibration = off
ram at 5-5-5-15 w/ trfc 60
All other settings @ auto
Given how stable the cpu normally is I'm guessing this is ram related however the memory passes memtest86 test 5 multiple times flawlessly. My hunch is that at boot time its not giving the ram enough voltage causing cmos corruption. Just to eliminate the possibility I upped the voltages on my cpu across the board by a notch. I'll know for sure whether that works when I get home. It does NOT corrupt the cmos unless the box has been sitting cold for several hours. I've left it off for 45 minutes and it still comes up flawlessly -- its rather odd to say the least.
update: Had one ram stick dying intermittently and it was *very* difficult to track down. Finally got it though and sent it back to corsair.
thanks for that link!!
only two x16 lanes on the Rampage Extreme?? Really? doesn't Maxiums Extreme have three (x16, x8, x8 if using all three??)
kind of a bummer. would be nice to find more options for dual graphics AND a slot for x8 RAID controller
looks fricken sexy though :)

BIOS 0121 for the rampage extreme is now available at the asus ftp site

1.add"CPU Clock Skew" & "NB Clock Skew"
2.add uCode(E0)
If you don't use water cooling, do you need to replace the water block in the north bridge.
wow - ditto that. Probably the best looking board I've seen. Hope it runs as nice!!
DO NOT USE THIS BIOS.
This BIOS has caused my machine tremendous instability and want to know the best f*cking part about it???
It will not let me flash to an older BIOS!!!
BL
EDIT: I posted in the other thread and will post the same here. I'm not sure if it was a coincidence ebtwen the BIOS and my RAM or not, but it turns out that my RAM was causing the instability. I had to slightly loosen my timing and inscrease voltage to eliminate any errors with memtest86...
You got to use afudos to flash back to older bioses.
AFUDOS is not working for me....
I have a USB drive that I've made into a bootable drive....
I have AFUDOS 2.36 on it and the 151.ROM
Every single time I try to flash, I get a message that AFUDOS cannot open the ROM file.
I am following the exact directions on the Asus support page too....
THE FOLLOWING IS THE COMMAND TO FLASH USING THE UTILITY:
AFUDOS /iP5E3-ASUS-PREMIUM-0151.ROM
If I do not use the "/i" switch, I get the message saying that i need to use the /i switchbefore the BIOS file name.....
I'm at a loss as what to do from here.....
BL
I'm back to 151...used a method posted in the P5E3 Premium Thread
How do you guys like the p5e3 premium? Trying to decide whether to get that or hold out for the Rampage Extreme.
I gave up with this POS .. it is just my opinion , bios not mature even if some can boot at very nice fsb
getting stability with mine was not piece of cake , so far .
strap issues , random reboots , freezes and bsod daily made me crazy and I'm an asus fan boy usually .
It was impossible to get prime stability ( just occt stable )as with my P5KC, P5K blackpearl whatever voltages I choosed
Now running P5E3 deluxe and prime stable without any issues so happy to have sold it .
I just wanted to get 2 x 16 pci express available
You can try it but I still say it's luck of the draw .
beware it has lot of ram issues.
good luck as I'm considering it is the worst board I had since 10 years !
:shakes::shrug:
Im sorry you feel this way... know what it feels like though :)
but this board is dancing pretty good tango with me :)
its just very tricky as ALL X48 boards, they need serious tweaking to get stable at high OC, and it isnt allways logical settings that is required... Ex, its stable at 1.55 vMCH but if you put 1.57-59 it doesnt pass OCCT. tricky board, and beleive me i have been screaming some nice words over this hehe... but now its totally tweaked and stable and getting superb performance not lot of people have :) and regarding FSB i can get 560, but some time ago i did that on the P35 to with the same cpu so i guess its the cpu and not the board, but hey, 560 is quite good anyway? :)
pick the board if you have some knowledge in tweaking and a lot of patience hehe.
cheers! :)
Works for me -- it is tricky. I'm on 0503
560 is pretty good but although I could max boot at 568 fsb with that board it 's not enough for me to keep something unstable all the way and with such ramdom issues .. occt vas stable though so WTF.. and prime never lol
Anyway I saw lot of benches related to high fsb but few ones concerning real stability with that X48 .. but it is no more my pb for future
good luck to you
regards
What do you think, is Rampage Extreme better then Striker II Extreme???
I'm feeling the same way as you.
I'm either going to RMA this board or just get rid of it all together.
I am having a very tough time getting it stable and not only that - now that I'm back to 151, which was the only BIOS that allowed me to go over 500FSB, It will now not allow me to do that!
This board is so inconsistent as far as stability....Orthos stable at one speed one day and not another day. Memetst96+ fine one day and then not another...or I can have the machine completely stable with Orthos blend, then I go launch a browser to surf the internet and i get a BSOD.
Oh, and i love it after I game for hours at a time and decide that I've had enough, that my computer decides to crash after that....not while gaming...go figure.
I'm back to 204 now.....
It is doing better than 151 did.....
I plan on trying 505 again straight flash from 204 after I get my new memory modules....I've determined that my memory was the problem causing all of the instability....
soo, I have RMA request in for my current sticks and new sticks on the way and will arrive Monday.
You can use the flash program provided several posts up I believe....I used it to force flash back to 151.....if it isn't this thread, then it is the other thread for the P5E3 Premium.
BL
So has anyone been able to tell if the Official 505 is better/Equal to the BETA 505?
New memory arrives today.....looking forward to some new overclocking....
BIOS 505 is working great for me.....
Not sure why I had so many problems the first time around...it may have been my memory.
This board is rock stable for me and i'm looking forward to dropping in a few ATI cards whenever I can....
BL
Great got a link for 0505 that is the final version?
Does anyone know why the P5E Deluxe has only *1* very lonely looking BIOS update....is it the perfect board..a total orphan...or can it use the Rampage Bios updates?
I could use some help here on overclocking my new E8400 on the P5E3-Premium mobo.
As far as I understand VID is the standard voltage the chip will run on when at standard speed. I guess my chip's VID was 1.18V @ 3Ghz (Q817A240; pack date 4-6-2008).
I already searched the internet for some basic settings to start from. The following settings got me into Vista64 but when I start orthos it already gives errors after app. 10 seconds. Would pls take a look at my current settings and give some advise:
CPU ratio: 9.0
FSB: 450
FSB strap: 400
PCI-E: 100
DRAM freq.: 1800
Timings: 8-7-7-25-2T @ 1.98V (factory specs are 7-6-6-24-1T @ 1.9V)
CPU volt: 1.425V
FSB temination: 1.3V
NB volt: 1.45V
Temps. idle: 42 and 36 (measured with speedfan v4.34)
Everything else is on auto including, load line calibration, CPU spread spectrum and CPU PLL voltage.
In my opinion these settings are way to high as compared to other E8400 users here on the board. However lowering one of these settings results in BSOD or no POST. Thanks in advance for the advise which is much appreciated!!!!
