Just thought I'd run the latest stable on a new machine. I had been running 5.10.45 for a while on the farm. Went to 6.2.19. As noted above, my gui_rpc_auth is not there on this version. (Vista ultimate 64bit) Since I manage the farm with Boincview, this is a problem. Has anyone figured out how to get it working or is boincview not going to work going forward?
I searched around a little and didn't find much on this. Figured I'd ask before I spent more time looking into it.
Thx,
Bob
Do you mean the 'gui_rpc_auth.cfg' file isn't there after installation? Just create the file if it doesn't exist, but if that's not the case then please explain further :)
Yes, it's not there after installation. I'll give creating one a shot, but I'm suspecting that this version may not support remote control.
Bob
EDIT: made a little gui_rpc_auth.cfg file and no luck. Boincview can't see this client. (and yes, I turned on the boinc port in the Vista firewall.) It appears to be turned off or stripped out of this version?
I don't mean to sound condoning but ... did you restart the system after saving that file to your BOINC directory?
You got the 'remote_hosts.cfg' file setup as well? Seeing as how it's a two part system there's always one piece to forget :p:
If that's not the case, then how about posting a copy of your 'stdoutdae.txt' and 'stderrdae.txt' logs?
As they would contain whatever errors the back-end spits out, like unapproved GUI RPC clients attempting to connect.
I don't believe the logs should contain any sensitive information, they're basically just what you see in the log tab.
You may need to make a file named "remote_hosts.cfg" and put the IP if the machine with BOINCview on it in there. It's just a regular text file but with a .cfg extension instead.
I did the remote hosts thing. I run boincview on all my other machines. I've been running it for some time, so I am familiar with how it is supposed to be setup on those. (version 5.10.45 clients) There just doesn't appear to be this functionality in version 6.2.19, as far as I can tell so far.
Has anyone got boincview running with the 6.x clients?
Regards,
Bob
How about posting the log files (stdoutdae.txt and stderrdae.txt in the base BOINC directory) as I mentioned?
I suppose the other thing is you could also just try running the client back-end (boinc.exe) from a console prompt instead to debug it, for which you can attach the '-allow_remote_gui_rpc' argument to let any host/IP attempt to authenticate and control via the GUI RPC functionality.
I just checked, and attempts by non-defined hosts (not in 'remote_hosts.cfg' that is) show up when running the client back-end from a console prompt, so that should show up in those log files as well, when running as a service that is. It doesn't look like clients using the wrong GUI RPC password show up though, so that makes things a little harder to diagnose.
I've been running versions 6.1.0 and 6.3.0 for quite some time with BoincView, that is with Windows XP and Linux respectively, so BoincView definitely works with the 6.x releases.
I don't bother with the passwords, and so wipe the contents of that file. I just block the ports at my network firewall.
Sorry rcofell, I read your other post too fast. I'll do as you say and report back here in a bit. Thx.
Good to hear you have it running on your rigs. I can at least go from there.
Regards,
Bob
EDIT #1: Well, the plot thickens....I looked for the files stdoutdae.txt and stderrdae.txt in the Boinc program directory, and they are not there. Neither are the sub-folders "projects" or "slots"..... I seem to remember at install time that it gave some options for putting stuff in different places. I just let it use the defaults. I looked over my whole machine trying to find them, but did not see them. Boinc is running and crunching WUs, so they must be somewhere... I'll investigate further and may re-install and see what happens....
That's it !
Look under c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application data\Boinc
Thanks Bob and rcofell
Was going to edit my previous one to report that I found it under c:\programdata\boinc. I'll edit this one to report on the progress. I bet if I stuck the remote_hosts file in here, it would work....... Stupid me.....:slobber:
EDIT: IT WORKED!! Thanks rcofell! :toast: If you hadn't asked about the files, I may never have caught that the specific data files were somewhere other than the boinc program directory. I feel somewhat stupid now, but I'm really happy boincview still works. I rely on it to manage the farm....
Thanks much,
Bob
That's why I install BOINC from a direct download instead of the repositories. The folder is where I put it, not spread out all over the file system. :shakes:
I install from download too. It just appears that this new version allows you to put the boinc data in a different place than the program. I just blew through the default choices when I installed and didn't catch that the locations were different. I'll likely re-install just to get it configured the same as all my other machines.
Thanks everyone for your help. This was driving me nuts.
Bob
That's not what he's suggesting. In an earlier post Bob mentioned that he was given the choice of where to put the data folder during the installation process. He is now considering re-installing from scratch and selecting to have everything in the same overall directory.
I would have thought if the installer gave the option then it would work.
In linux they live quite happily in the same directory ie BOINC (linux is a completely different animal I know)
You are both right. I always had the boinc data files in the boinc program directory on my client version 5.10.45 installs. They must have changed this at some point though because this new version won't allow me to choose the same directory. The easy work around was to create a sub-directory called "data" in the program files boinc directory. So, it's all back in one folder now, with the new "data" subfolder. Screenies to show what I'm saying....
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...thscreenie.jpg
This shows the 6.2.19 screen I blew past when I originally installed. Note the it sets the directory differently. Note the "advanced" button.
Pushing the button gives this screen....I set both path's equal using the "change" button.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...d2screenie.jpg
Doing this now gives...
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...d3screenie.jpg
I went back in and added a "data" subdirectory and it took it. Now my path to the gui_rpc_auth and such is c:\program files\boinc\data. It's happy, I'm happy.
Now all is happy with this final screenie....:clap::yepp:
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s...45screenie.jpg
Note that this is 6.4.5. While I was messing with this, 6.4.5 went to the "recommended" Status at the boinc page..... I figured I'd put it in since I was re-installing anyway...
Regards,
Bob
Can WCG use CUDA in the latest version as on the BOINC page it says:
For BOINC 6.4.5 and later
"Use your NVIDIA GPU for scientific computing"
"Projects with CUDA applications include:
GPUgrid.net
Of course, you can attach to other projects too; BOINC will keep both your CPU and GPU busy."
Anyone tried it? I only have one CUDA card atm but this sure would generate more points if it worked.
+1 here. Same question.
I don't much care what app I run on it, just so it's a worthwhile cause.
I only have a few rigs that have decent enough cards in them to run on, but I'll crunch those if I can. Heck, I'd crunch with the washing machine if I could figure out how to get a client running on it....
w00t! 6.4.5 is the recommended version for x86_64 :)
Guess I'll have to try it out later then! and report back.
I await your results.
Ok, tried it on two opterons (185 and 170) and an Athlon XP. Benchmarks have dropped a few % across all machines so far.have to wait and see what happens to completion times or if this is just all about CUDA.
With 5.10.45 and 6.4.5 on a dual Harper rig @3.6gig, I get the following for benches
5.10.45 - 3661/10744
6.4.5 - 3658/10781
Nearly equal and the completion times look very close to the same.
I've had 6.4.5 running for about 15 hours now and it has been running smoothly. One thing of note is that I don't seem to have as big a WU queue as I should. I'll have to look into the preferences on that. I have it set to the same profile as my other machines. I may have to reset preferences on the client.
I'm not doing anything with the CUDA stuff yet. I have to find out if it works and can contribute yet.
Regards,
Bob
I don't have any CUDA enabled cards, so that part is wasted on me.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/io_1229516081227.html
According to NVIDIA, SETI and Einstein have now added CUDA support, but still no mention of WCG.
Can't say the gains are shockingly huge though.. GTX 280 2 times faster than a stock i7 965? Perhaps they only use FP64.
The good news is that unlike certain CUDA DC projects it's both Win and Lin.
Actually ...
CUDA support in the science apps at WCG is coming.Quote:

is 6.4.5 good replacement for 5.10.45 at 32bit system? should i change the 5.10.45?
I'd split the difference and go to 6.2.19.
What are the advantages if any of moving from 5.10.45 x64 (which has been a flawless performer) to the newer versions?
The CUDA support of 6.4.5 is about the only reason I know of. So far, I have not found a way to take advantage of it yet. For those running old cards or headless, I see no advantage to running 6.4.5. I'm still running 5.10.45 64 bit on most of the farm since they are very old graphic cards there. 5.10.45 has been bullet proof for me.
I'm having the odd issue of queuing WUs, as I reported on the other thread with high priority WUs, on the only machine running 6.4.5. I suspect this may be due to 6.4.5. I won't propagate it to any other machines until I know what's up with that...

Bob

2. and how to switch from high priority to normal
http://localhostr.com/files/562809/boinc645.png
as u can see in shot, 3 WUs have high priority and 1 is normal
You will get new WUs as soon as one is nearly finished or as soon as it has finished. I've also got it from time to time.
yea, but i have them in previous version and now they are gone :)
one WU is done and gone for reporting, three are crunching but no new ones

Check your client preferences. The (retarded) defaults are to connect every 4 days and ask for 1 day's worth of work. Make sure you're connecting at least daily and asking for at least a day's worth of work. Then make sure your network activity isn't restricted somehow, either in the "activity" menu or in your preferences.
this is how it's set
http://localhostr.com/files/149ed5/boinc.png
i get WU at the same moment that there is one finished. always there are 4 active WUs
but in 5.10.45 i have a lot more WUs , besides those 4 active that are waiting for crunching. now in tasks window i have only 4 WUs (those active ones)
additional work buffer= extra cache, set appropriately.
Try these settings:

6.4.6 is not recommended, there was some problems with it!
What do you mean- I have an older version on the computer at work and tried to install the newest version but got some kind of kind of error message. Of course it is working, merrily chugging along but I figured the newest version would be best.
If you look at the main dowload page, you can see it's not recommended any more, they changed back the recommended version to 6.4.5.
What was that error message?
You know I can't remember exactly, something about "error file". I got version 6.4.6 running on both my rigs at home, loaded up fine and am flying through projects on my Q6600- very excited. When I go back to work I will try and load the 6.4.5 version.
Just wondering what is a good average of daily work?
Maybe I'm a bit late with the answer, but you can also try the new recommended version: 6.4.7
Windows 32 bit
Windows 64 bit
Average? On my computer it look's like this, rig in sig:
http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/7448/wcgstat.jpg
There were a lot of weird file access errors coming from 6.4.5 at WCG. Google it, but you might want to steer clear of that one.
6.4.5 had run as service issues on server 2003 and server 2008 as well. I reported those long ago.
Is it recommended to run the Boinc version rather than the WCG version? when I signed up about a month ago they had a link to the WCG version but I see everyone talking more about the Boinc version.
Many here run 64bit OSs and many more like to stay with the cutting edge to try and stay ahead of the curve for points and performance.
The WCG version is the one they have tested to their satisfaction above and beyond how Berkley have tested them, while the others are newer and sometimes give better performance and/or new features (but not always).
The WCG version and the BOINC versions are exactly the same, it's just that BOINC gets updated more regularly (since they're the ones making the client). WCG is currently using 6.2.28 while BOINC is using 6.4.x. That said, I don't know of any real issues with 6.2.28, and I think the PPD difference would be fairly minimal, so unless you're having issues there isn't really a big need to change to a newer BOINC version (although moving from a 5.xx.xx to a 6.xx.xx version does usually give a PPD increase).

so you are saying to get the best results I should have the latest version- and all I have to do is close down the boinc version i have now->download the latest version-> and install it and it will start working away with all my info like nothing happened? Latest (stable?) version seems to be 6.4.7
And Sunfire thank you for all the help and constant updates- I am head first into Crunching now and can't get enough of it at this point!!!
No. Sometimes the latest version just adds features rather than improving performance (think 6.4.5). How you go about installing the new version over an old one depends greatly on how you installed the old one. If it's the windows version then yes, just shut it down and run the new installer. (I think)
Thanks; I read that the WCG was 32 bit and Boinc was 64 bit; Is this not correct?
EDIT: Does anyone use the GPU version? Does this produce more points than standard? Unfortunately I do not have an Nvidia card though; I went ATI for F@H; of course they support Nvidia now too. although folding on gpu and WCG on cpu is working out pretty well.
