That way our users could do whatever they wanted to make their desktop pretty and use the software they want. If you tried to port the Windows API and DX10 directly into a Linux kernel module, however, Mr. Gates would reach down your throat and rip your heart out.
if this is just a gaming OS, then why not have an interface where all you have to do is click on the game you want to play and that game is launched (and then give option to have a "normal" desktop.....
say for example like this mockup here http://delfick.storage.googlepages.com/xsos.png (except the whole screen, the squares would be the would be the icon for the game, and "game" would be replaced with the name of the game, and a whole lot of polish :D)
where the "manage games" button would allow you to install and remove games...
(i'll let you guess what the "shutdown" button would do :D)
......
How much is XSOS 3 going to cost?
nothing :D it's a free operating system :DQuote:

I don't really care too much if it looks like a lot of the linux distros out there, or kinda like Windows, or even like a Mac, I would just rather have it work great and be very stable. But I would like to have the ability to "zoom" out to view all your open widows like Expose has on a Mac, it is a very useful feature that helps with switching between different windows and programs a lot easier and more fun :)
I don't mind the looks that much, clean and simple is all good. Functionality is what matters.
very important question here...
Since the release of vista i been seeing alot of posts with people having problems with the install on certain mobos/processors. Since XSOS is vista based, is it likely that we will experience similar issues?
1) different baseQuote:

How about a real OS, not just a striped down DOS box for running Direct X 10 games!
Something that also supports the other things you need to do with a computer.
Thanks:D

Keep in mind, the XSOS does not fall within warez limits due to the legality issues nn_step has set up with Microsoft. This link to a torrent has NOTHING to do with XSOS and is NOT ALLOWED.
**EDITed by IFMU**
As I said in the PM to you, this is NOT allowed. This is WAREZ.
You MUST re-read the
Forums Rules & Guidelines
and it more than likely would not hurt for you to read the Announcement on
Warez, Crackz, and Copyrighted Material.
I better not find this posted again or you will recieve a perma ban.

And then you go in and edit out My editing of your post with the exact same thing I removed and the say to PM you for links?
Good Bye.

so nn_step this menas that u divided the beta testers into groups
and that each griup will get a PM when their turn to test the OS comes ?

This better not be fake. Sounds to good to be true, but I will keep checking back. :toast:
I'd be interested in beta testing this in future. So if you want a hand from someone with a fair amount of experience at it, give me a PM.
Other than nn_step, who are the guys behind this?
The major people behind it is Microsoft because without their assistance our project never would have been possibleQuote:

Not really... I've put my name on the testing-list so I hope to receive a download-link soon, but I also understand that nn_step has better things to do than sending PM's to people telling them when they'll get it or in what beta-group they are.Quote:

If you could e-mail me when the beta testing starts for whichever group I am in, that'd be great.

Cool, I look forward to this. What "teaser shot," I don't see anything.

I remember not so long ago a large number of WoW players using Cedega were banned because Warden was detecting something either present or missing that put up a red flag. I wonder how these AC systems will play with XSOS. I'm definately not gonna be playing WoW on XSOS until I've tested the risk of being struck with the banstick using a trial account, or I've seen somebody else give it a try. I know PunkBuster has issues with Vista (playing ET, I've seen several people automaticly kicked for various game integrity errors, and I've even seen people getting their GUID's PERMANENTLY banned because of false positives arising from playing under Vista (albeit the beta release), so I'd be even more worried about PB violations while playing under XSOS, as it'd be even more alien for PB, with more possible false-positives. I don't know about VAC or other anticheat systems.
I can not make promises regarding the effects of "anti-cheat" applications simply because they are designed for Windows not for XSOS or linux
well XSOS is windows based aint it? wouldnt that make it ok or did you guys remove things that could cause issues with anti cheat games.Quote:

nn_step didn't say Vista (all package) sucks, he owns a build of this OS, on other treads he usually posts about DRM as negative function and other "Bling - Blings" unnecessary for all users.
Noob = beginner (A inexperienced and/or ignorant or unskilled person)
Noobs of the world = beginners of the world (inexperienced kind, yet they own a PC for a couple of years - they used it only for multimedia, games, school projects already finished and chat)
Professionals use Mac and Unix based OS.
PS.Even professionals used it at home - at least those who don't have a Mac OS X :).

Who was in it that posted to be in it and can they provide some detailed feedback? Or are they sworn to silence?
Well, each case is different, maybe this one is different of whatever you've ran into. If memory serve me well, some kind of contract exist between MS and the XSOS team. Maybe certain questions can't be answered because of that. I don't know either, but I, opposite to you, need this to be proved false, not the other way around.
About the first beta team, I don't know either, but I suppose that if it's a closed beta, the feedback is possibly "closed" too. You could have tried to join the beta when it was open to see by yourself. I tried to do so (in fact I registered here only for that reason) but I didn't know about the moderation queue and wasn't able to post till the next day he closed it :(
Anyways, I'm not trying to attack you or anything. Just have a different point of view. Oh, and I don't know if it were you, but someone asked, some pages back, "why would be MS helping XSOS team". My response to this is: "Why not? Just because they never did it before? You can't be sure only for that reason."
Cheers.
are we able to see this contract ??? :D

And as far as I'm concerned Apple f**cked up grandly, and may have forever lost my confidence, with their series of commercials depicting a Mac as cool, young and hip while the PC is old, strict and conservative. One of the commercials is like "I know you're really good with numbers PC..." "Yeah, and you're really good with the creative stuff Mac..." and this is where I go WTF?! =) It's the same hardware now. What could possibly make Mac OS more "creative" than Wintendo (since it's only an OS question now)? It's like saying *nix is only for servers...
I digress...I really hope XSOS v3 will come to be and be as good as anything it hopes emulate. If it would turn out to be bogus I would be somewhat more than disapointed...
i say that we just all shutup and let "nnstep's team" do the work. if it doesnt release, a fake, then he pays. grandly. for his reputation. embarassment.
if he does, then great!
what good is there in pessimism? its not like we've all placed bets on him.
playing on his side:
if he is just making all this up, then whats his point? fame? i mean infamous if its all just a fluke.
yes, i understand that speedlander is making very good points. in all honesty, i doubt his contract with MS. but who knows? we really have no right to say anything when there is absolutely no proof.
i signed up for beta testing early, so i HOPE to acquire a copy soon.
when is the OS out? not beta the final

Seems to be alot of talk in here that is not helping the development of XSOS, and NN_Step you should be answering more questions, i.e at what stage the beta resting is up to. If you're unable to answer certain things ATM (due to MS contract or some other reason) just say so.
from everything I know, from everything I've heard and from all my gut instincts I beleive what nn_step says on this.
Now if you can't beleive him for whatever reason thats fine but don't toss it up here. The guy has put a lot into this and that in itself is provable by anyone that has tried his OS. I have and it is in fact his and that is a fact.
As to contracts with whomever I have no reason to disbelieve him.
Agreed 100%. I do not understand why people feel the need to rant and rave and demand answers. If you don't believe, go away... It seems fairly simple. I would rather nn spend all his time producing a quality OS than sit in this forum 24 hours a day answering asinine questions and assuaging ridiculous fears.Quote:

I'm not doubting nn_step, I just find the fact that the "teaser" shot is nothing more than KDE + a text editor most likely running on Linux.
You mean I wasn't supposed to get DirectX10 and the Win32 to work properly by porting some Microsoft source code into ubuntu? Darn, looks like I have to make some changes to make you "feel better" about the OS. :rolleyes:Quote:
