I am a little more interested in your kernel now. And have a few Questions. Prolly more than a few... meh...

Will this be able to run Linux or Unix Binaries? or will it be their own type? XSOS binaries?

Our official API has not been finalized but we are leaning towards D for ease of programming

i'm just curious...are microsoft programmers not under some contract which takes their intellectual property and makes it that of microsoft? so if a microsoft employee works on the xsos project, does microsoft own that work?

ok, so you mean that it'll probably be impossible to make a linux distro think you're trying to run a virtualized linux inside of it with the new KVM (Kernel Virtual-Machine, it's a form of virtualization that passes on the exact hardware specs rather than generics and only to another *nix from the kernel rather than userspace.) stuff that's being put into the 2.6.x linux kernels.

if you could somehow make the kernel work with it after KVM is finalized that'll be awesome!

too bad you couldn't just derive from the linux kernel, but if you're trying to BSD it and not GPL, then you can't use linux.

it will work on anything just like normal windows but with much better perfromance and less load that it will run perfectly on a P3 and even P2

i'm bumping my own post...i really want to know the answer because if microsoft owns part of this project it just lost a lot of my interest.

for example, i _know_ anything a google programmer does "on their own time" is property of google inc., and i can't imagine microsoft doesn't use a similar contract.

I'm interested in beta testing when the first release is available.

I'll beta test. I'm in the process of setting up my system to dual-boot, and I have the spare hard disk space for another OS.

My rig:
Athlon64 3000+
Via K8M800 Northbridge
VT8237 Southbridge
1GB DDR400 CAS2.5
6800 Ultra AGP 8X
Various SATA-I & IDE Drives
Using Onboard NIC & Audio
Running stock speeds/voltages across the board.

Can't test DX10 compatibility, but I can test compatibility with some aging hardware.

I've 3 test rigs

- socket 939 (Opteron 148)
- socket A (Athlon 2000+)
- centrino (Pentium Mobile 1.6 Sonoma)

I still have a 233MMX @ 266 running XP like a baby :D

5) This project is nothing more than a stopgap measure for other Operating systems to catch up with windows in user friendliness.
6) ultimately the next project after this will not support win32 but rather GTK+
7) only people covered by the our designated NDA have any ability to help with the project in forms outside of graphics, testing, and advice.

5) Other operating systems, should they decide to compete with windows must provide double click ease for the masses. However linux and most BSDs are a far way from that.
6) this project is like anything else in life, just a path of learning and improving understanding. The next project is going to be an attempt to provide an OS so light that it can run on less than 640kb of ram.
7) the Betas have ZERO access to source code or any other material covered. However they will be supplied with compiled binaries in ISO format for their installs and testing. No NDA required, however they will be issued logins and each version will contain a simple feature to make sure that they don't leak the OS.

actually it will feature a clean GUI backed in with a streamlined text interface and a port for graphics design. But DX is something too large and memory hungry to fit in that version

what scam? I have never asked for MONEY or hardware or anything outside of graphics work. There are no advertisements or Paypal donate button.
and I do take personal offense to evilghost's comment about my ISOs being infected. If he believes that, have him check them line by line and check every single known virus/malware/spyware/etc footprint on EARTH.

JINroh, it would be argued by any resonable person that your sole purpose on this forum is to do nothing with the exception of flame, flame baiting and general BS-ology. Do you even think for a second that the worlds premiere overclocking community would tolerate a fraud or fraudulant acts to be committed under their nose, WITH FULL KNOWLEDGE! you'll be informed of what beta group you are in, your user specific login and password. And you have 2 Days from the day that I send the PM to you to download the OS, after that you report to me via PM. Reporting problems, or telling me if there are no problems

I would be happy to test it on my WCG farm to get a couple different results. Just PM me if you want me in. They run on mostly XSOS 2 now or linux all but my 64XP for BF2 :D

will is be as easy to install as windows and current linux distros?
installing games and apps, will be as easy as in windows?
will it be heavy to the system? memory usage and disk space?
will it be virus protected or will be as easy to catch a virus like windows?
the drivers used will be windows-based or linux-based?

from what I believe,

-the install will be like installing windows xp. blue screen after you boot, you know the drill
-games/etc, im not sure, but i bet it wont be very hard to work with
-heavy to system? NOT AT ALL! less than 100mb memory used at startup (50-70mb, somewhere in between there I BELIEVE)
-virus protected? install antivirus just like you need to do with windows
-drivers? I believe will be windows-based (thank god, <3 the compatibility)

I'm mainly a lurker 'round these parts, but I just couldn't hold my questions in on this thrilling development! A streamlined OS for benchmarking, yet extend-able for other tasks such as gaming? I've been dreaming about this for years! I always fantasized my computer/OS having a gearshift: first starting just the basic services, then the GUI, the third "gear" initializing start up tasks... Then shifting to the side to connect to the network, then again to the Internet... Seems like this sort of idealistic functionality might be in this flexible OS, as the screenshots have betrayed. Anyway, the questions:

First, what are you going to do about graphics drivers? Are we to take it that ATI and nVidia have been involved at some level? After all, modern video drivers are enormous and complex beasts...

Second, Aero or something like it would be nice; I just want the ability to free up just a few more CPU cycles to an otherwise wasted GPU, the look itself doesn't matter. After all, that should help marginally in benching, right?

And third... is it too late for me to sign up for the beta? :P

nn doesn't take donations... and afaik if it's based on Vista you won't need RAID drivers to install.

This sounds very nice, i would very much like to betatest this. I have a laptop and a pc with a spare partition waiting for this puppy, would also like to see how it performs, compared to my stripped (nlite) xp install. Also i have enough time to scour for and document bugs.
