Welcome to the team!!
Yes, welcome!
Any folding is good folding! Thanks for helping out. We need all the help we can get!
By the end of the year (at current PPD) I will be at #99! And 90 days from the top 100!
I only use my GPU(8800GTS) for folding because my quad is being delayed. I have about 3,6k PPD :(
I'm looking into Joining.. I downloaded this.
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download#ntoc1
the top one. I'm on vista64bit. and if anyone noticed. I have a good system for this.. What else would I need to install, and how hard is it to get going.
This is for the High Performance Clients.
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther
The top one Windows: V6 GPU2 will install sys tray client for your gpu.
The second set of clients are for your cpu: Windows: V6 Beta SMP/CPU clients
There are guides here on XS for install and the official guides are here
http://foldingforum.org/
If you have problems or questions just post you'll get a lot of help here.
So what I downloaded was wrong.. Delete that.
and the link you provided. I should install the top one.. and thats simple. and nothing complicated. it will run in system tray. and thats for the GPU. then the second one is the Beta one for my CPU. I read it and it says I should install 5.92 first. is this correct? or should I just install the new V6 Beta. ( can the beta's or even F@H harm my PC?). also the top one of V6 Beta SMP/CPU says for 32bit only. I'm 64 bit. So should I just download the one below it. Even though it doesn't say for Deino.? I'm lost. but I'll give them a try.
So in both of those. I need to enter the XS #. or does it link to my name or something? sorry I'm completely new to F@H
also since I have Nvidia's 177.92 that has CUDA right. I don't need a new driver. or should I update to 178.13 anyways.
Thanks!
Your video driver should be fine I do not think there has been any improvement from 177.92 to 178,13 MikeB12 might be able to answer that one better since I think he has used both drivers. As for installing 5.92 first for the cpu smp client that is not needed just install one of the 6.22 betas. I can not tell you which one is better since I am not a windows folder you need to get that answer from a windows smp folder.
Cool.. thanks for the info. and ya I'm assuming I need to download the second beta. as the first one is for 32bit only. second is both. I'm on 64 bit. but it also says different things in it. so i was confused.
thanks!
I usually use the -Systray clients they are easier for me to handle and they lack the eyecandy things.
Thats what I want.. system tray. where can I get that for the CPU folding
Xgun, these next 2 posts will be how to setup and run a nvidia gpu client and dual smps on your qaud in Vista 64.. probably around 8K ppd.
FIRST Setup GPU.
1.
dl 178.13 drivers and install http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
2.
dl gpu systray client and install. http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandeg...tray-620r1.msi
3.
Start the client, right click your systray icon-configure and set your:
team=36362
username=xguntherc
machine id=3
check box "slightly higher" on advanced tab.
gpu client is done. right click the systray icon and stop it so you can install your smp's.
SECOND SMP: they do not make a systray client for smp.
HOW I DUAL SMP IN WINDOWS (Vista): (6 steps)
1.
Download affinity changer, either 32 bit or 64 bit depending on your vista os. http://distributed.org.ua/forum/inde...showtopic=1149
and install it. the service will start at the end, and will start with windows from now on. DONE.
2.
dl 2 copies of 6.22 mpich http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandeg...-SMP-mpich.exe
and install it in 2 different directories
C:\smp1
C:\smp2
3.
dl the beta exe http://www.stanford.edu/~kasson/fold...-Win32-x86.exe
and drop it in the install dir copying over the old one.
4.
Copy shortcuts of "install.bat" and "Folding@home-Win32-x86.exe" to your desktop and rename them...
for my example I used
shortcut name = Loginx for install.bat
shortcut name = smpx for Win32-x86.exe
then right click-properties of both smpx shortcuts and add the flags (-smp -local) to them. as illustrated.
http://img385.imageshack.us/img385/3873/13044935qe9.jpg
5.
Before launching smpx shortcuts, always launch both install.bats (loginx) to get "mpi is working" twice for both directories..
You must use a windows admin with a password for this, if you don't have one with a password, create it now...
Turn UAC off in Vista.
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/6931/59655181pu8.jpg
6.
now you can launch the clients with the smpx shortcuts, the first time you launch it will ask you too config.
fill in your username and team.
answer YES to advanced config, and make the first client machine id=1, and the second client machine id=2...
the rest are your call, I just use the default on all except machine id...

Wow Mike.. thats some great work and info there. Thanks for the Help. first off. Do i really need to get 178.13, or am I ok with 177.92 for now?
first off why do I need to Run 2 sets of the SMP.?? Just cuz I can with my CPU basically or what.. also after i add the flag to the shortcut. all I need to do after that is just click the shortcut. and I can remove that from the desktop right. as I use a dock instead.
that totally sucks there is no system tray for SMP. thats lame. lol.
and do I need a Passphrase for GPU.. does that matteR?
you'll get more points by running dual smp's. the smp client is not mature, so it needs both instances to milk all the cycles out of a quad. if fah ever gets the new fah core out of closed testing and actually working in windows we wont need all this junk. but we still do. you dont have to run 2, but it wont pull all the ppd out of your quad.
everytime you launch smp you have to click the login shortcuts to give windows the mpi rights to run the client or it will error.
then you can launch the smp shortcuts to launch the client. but you obly have to configure once, after that it just launches.
but you will have to keep the windows open in the systray to run the client. there's a service smp guide around here somewhere, but I've never used it.
smp is a little whiner baby of a client, so it does take some getting used to. you'll see it errors out now and then and requires attention to keep it going.
fah considers it beta still, but it's the only multi threaded cpu client they have. if you use the sytray client it only runs on one core and produces very low ppd. dual smps will procude about 3000ppd on a quad. a single smp will produce about 2000ppd. so it's up to you.
smp is one of the pieces of software that they tell you, hey look it's beta so quit biching... everyone complains about it, but it does no good.
you dont have to run it if you dont want, but many of us do and get an extra couple grand ppd out of it...
you can put the shortcuts anywhere you want, but you'll need them to launch the client everytime.
oh yeah, the 177.92 is fine.
Boom... there it is. My first Fold for XS (Or for anyone)
GPU is hard at work already.. Thanks for the info. Next is the CPU. or maybe I'll do that tomorrow. as It's almost 3AM.
oh and do I need the affinity changer thing.. ?? for now I'm only going to run 1.. I'll do 2 later maybe. we'll see how this goes.
you wont need affinity changer for one smp client, but you will for 2 clients. but I would go ahead an install it. it's just a small dl and a one click install and done. no configuring. it's not going to hurt one client anyway.
I have a copy of the 64 bit vista AC to make it easy, just dl this unzip and install it and you're done,. it's just a next, next, next install. http://www.scootplace.net/fah/FahSmp..._x64_1.0.4.zip
btw. dl fahmon http://fahmon.net/
it will monitor your clients... and calculate ppd.
your gpu watch folder is in your profile/app data/roaming settings
Well for now I wont get Affinity.. why have something startup with system if not using it.. if I go to Dual CPU folding.. I'll get it. but thanks for the info. I appreciate it Sir.
and for Fahmon, is that where ur getting the pictures thats in your Sig. or is that from somewhere else.? and when you say GPU watch is in profile/roaming/app sett.. is that in Fahmon your talking?
thanks Again!
sig images are from here http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/?nav=IMAGES and tracks your wu's that are turned in and sent back completed.
fahmon looks like this and is just an app on your machine that monitors your clients, it doesn't track your ongoing turned in unit. just your current wu's being processed on your local machine.
I'm monitoring all of mine locally and my other folders across a windows netowrk.
the local gpu watch ffolder for the gpu on this machine I'm posting from is displayed at the bottom. and the client is highlighted in blue.
In vista in my user folder.. gunther, there isn't an App Data. so I can search for it through start menu, but not in Fahmon..... also what do I open when browsing in fahmon.. the log file or what?
like I can't find it to add to Fahmon.
control panel - folder options -show hidden files
Done, Perfect. Thanks!
