Yes. But this is relative a little work. Besides, writing BIOSes is the main job of the BIOS engineers, no? :)
Of cause. But all those erratas are not relevant to 24/7 use. It may be interesting to OS writers or those, who is programming some specific applications. It is applied to Penryn erratas as well. Really critical errata (such Yorkfield instability on older boards) may delay CPU intro.Quote:
I do remember there being a bunch of issues with 65nm C2D and I think there was a microcode update for those.
Yes but there are no explanation how exactly it is implemented. I suppose the most BIOS fixes are implemented through microcode update. And, possible, it was already done.Quote:
If you look at the list of errata there are a lot of "bios workaround" mentions. For example the most recent addition - AW51 from 02/01/2008.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see if there are updates that fix some things or not. Aside from errata I think there may be need for lower voltage settings in some bioses to meet the specs..
Here is my Aquamark3 result at 4850mhz with single 8800 Ultra.:D
Just built my new machine this weekend: E8400, Tuniq Tower 120, Gigabyte P35-DS3L, 4GB DDR2-800 SuperTalent, EVGA 8800GT, 150GB RaptorX - All these bought new. I'm using my old Antec Sonata (the original) case, and OCZ 520W PSU (still under warranty).
The new machine was built so I can play DX10 games, as well as be able to run it 24x7 as a web/app server, so it has to be quiet. My previous rig had 6 fans and was very noisy (X-Alien case, opteron 165 @2.7GHz, Asus A8N-SLI, 2GB DDR-400, XFX 7800GTX OC, 150GB Raptor, same OCZ-520W PSU.
Anyway, without wasting too much time, I overclocked it to 400MHz FSB, CPU @9x400=3600 MHz, 1.325 V. Temps are 32C idle, 59 load - with the Tuniq Tower 120 CPU fan at the lowest setting (1000 RPM). If I disconnect the case fan (a single 120mm rear exhaust), the temps increase by 8-10 C.
I'm currently shopping for quieter case fans, and possibly a VGA cooler.
I haven't overclocked the video card yet, so 3DMark06 score is around 11.5K.
I'm very impressed with the Tuniq cooler. I even left it overnight with CPU and case fans both disconnected, and it still managed to keep the CPU below 60C (idle, closed case).
rofl -ive had to have an arguement with scan.co.uk to get my cpu rma'd after my psu blew up as apparently (quote the chap) "ive never had to rma a cpu and these have been out for 2 weeks so i doubt they will die"
Bit confused with temps.

This is at 4.23Ghz - 1.416v REAL * 1.372v LOAD
What im confused about is, WHY am I getting a bunch of different readings on different apps, example, core temp reads the 2 cores @ 65/65C LOAD, speedfan is reading CORE @ 55C and CPU @ 45C
What the fook is WHAT ??
I am not worried about my temps, I have nothing crazy on vcore and a good cooler - the TU120 EX, I just wanna know what the hell is what!
:(
have you tried everest or uguru?
I have an early version of everest but it does not recognise my CPU and the latest version just says I need a key - but the early version says the same CPU temp as speedfan.

EDIT: OH WAIT< it seems speedfan is STUCK on 54 CORE temp.
I find this part very interesting: Our temps problems?:
AW30. Programming the Digital Thermal Sensor (DTS) Threshold May Cause
Unexpected Thermal Interrupts
Problem: Software can enable DTS thermal interrupts by programming the thermal
threshold and setting the respective thermal interrupt enable bit. When
programming DTS value, the previous DTS threshold may be crossed. This
will generate an unexpected thermal interrupt.
Implication: Software may observe an unexpected thermal interrupt occur after
reprogramming the thermal threshold.
Workaround: In the ACPI/OS implement a workaround by temporarily disabling the DTS
threshold interrupt before updating the DTS threshold value.
Status: For the steppings affected, see the Summary Tables of Changes.
& this the part i found interesting - Plan: No Fix

Anyone have the release date for the E8600 with 10X multi?
Is it true that the max FSBv u may apply for these chips is 1.15v? cause I have my FSBv @ 1.40 now, so it worries me abit oO
That is the official Intel spec but nobody around here ever listens to stuff like that. :D
http://download.intel.com/design/pro...s/31873201.pdf
2.6 Voltage and Current Specification pg.17
The Absolute Maximum for FSBv is 1.45 volts but anything beyond 1.155 volts is beyond spec.
Gaah! Can't Understand why both the U.S. versions of this cooler (Xigmatek and Kingwin) come with the push-pin mounts! They don't provide enough pressure!

Yes, I'm gonna try 4GHz and even more, after I get my new case fans. My current case fan is too loud, so I turned it off, and the CPU temps at 3.6GHz are already above 60C (load), so I don't want to go higher until I have a good case fan in there. Not to mention that 8800GT is idling at 75C (not overclocked), which seems way too high. Damn Nvidia and their sub-par stock cooling.
Alright, so with the new E8400 and the 16B09 bios here's what I'm getting.
This is exactly what I was hoping would happen with a cpu exchange, lower volts and 4ghz stable while closed up in my desk on air cooling.
I know I'm not in the same ballpark as some of the other extreme numbers, but I have slow RAM that doesn't like much more then 480FSB and really, 4ghz is good enough for me. I included my settings from uGuru if anyone was curious.
