1.48v(bios) Its idling at 28C(40C coretemp, both cores) now the XTX (boy does that pump out some heat) has cooled down a bit, ambient 20C.

Yeah, I know where they are. The chip throttles at 85C IIRC, so apply the offset and you get to maybe 70/73C from the MB/Bios before any step down. Like I said, the motherboard sensors is close to my thermocouple and quite accurate for a change, the on die coretemp is always going to be much higher. From that I'd think the stock cooler would throttle with an OC, anyone seen that yet?

What was the idle before you lapped it?

You'd think, but like the opty's with the IHS removed, if its a a good clocker it'll sell. Like the 3GHz 146's on ebay went for rude money.

Idle before lapp was 48c (asus ai-booster reading) at 1.4625 vcore bios 3.5Ghz

Idle after 40c

Now running 1.55v vocre bios and 3.7Ghz and back to 48c idle.

Been reading rest of thread. Seems that the 65C is actually offset by 12C. Ie actual is 53C. Not bad for full load, but to me it is the same as my AMD OCed temps when ambient is 30C. Given that the person who posted today is in the Uk, this number is very high compared to my 43C CPu at the moment (ambient 22C, 2x rosetta clients running full load).

You are right, something is out of line. Maybe his heat sink needs reseating or something.

Agree with your idea of the cool chamber. I am using this now. CMStacker 830 with two 120x38 mm intake fans and one similar exhaust fan. The heat sink is sitting in a direct cold air draft. Very effective and probably better than an open bench. However, it is an expensive setup. When you add the stacker + extra 3-in-1 module+ 3x38mm fans + Freezer Pro cooler, it cost maybe £100+ extra, in addition to modding effort to fit the 38 mm from fans. Ok, excellent cooling but not really quiet at all.

Was hoping that C2D would be more efficient and would fit a normal case with less noise than that, given it is only 65W vs 110W for AMD X2.

Please keep us posted about what temperatures you get in your setup. Thanks.

I will keep you posted m8. Would love to see some pics of yours too. It's good to see other people's rigs and at a time like now (with me starting to compile now and build my rig at the end of the month) it comes in handy so I can get some good ideas! :)

When you said 3-in-1 3x38mm fans I thought you was on about something in a 5.25" bay! I was thinking this as I am desperate to get something like this on the go! lol.

Been as the above is not possible (a Scythe Kama bay is the idea but that needs 3x 5.25" drive bays - not one!) I'm instead looking for a BLACK HDD cooler for the 5.25" bay.

When I get my fans I'll post a pic of them inside the case. I'm currently measuring up and deciding what fan to put at the bottom of my case modded infront of the HDD bays.

so far what will be in my case for cooling / cooling related is:

1x Sunbeam Rheobus fan controller
3x Sanyo-Denki 102.5 cfm 120x38mm fans
1x 92mm or 80mm fan (modded in front of the lower HDD cage)
1x Thermaltake Extreme Spirit II NB chipset fan (may not be using now due to P5B heatpipe!)
1x Tuniq Tower 120 H/S
1x Antec Tricool 120mm fan

Ordered my RAM, mobo and ninja from Chillblast on Wednesday, ready for delivery on Thursday. Checked the Citylink online tracking service, appeared to have been delivered no problems (to my work address). Pop upstairs to reception, no parcel, go downstairs to the main building reception, no parcel. At this point, I'm thinking I've been robbed. I've got 60p on my phone in credit so quickly ring home find at whether they have been stupid enough to deliver home, yes.. they have. I'm sat in Leeds and my parcel in Lincoln, parents are going away 6am Saturday and I've got a friends birthday straight after work Friday night so the only time to go is now (Thursday after work, when I should have my parcel anyway). So I have to hop on the train, get to Lincoln and collect my parcel, say "hi" of course, jump back on the train and arrive back in Leeds only for time to take my old PC apart before it's 1am and I need to up at 7am. I'm not impressed, first time I've used Chillblast from a friends recommendation and they've let me down bigtime.

I hope I can take an hour out before I go out tonight to build the thing :slapass:

while running my day to day things like xvid encoding , games ect core temp never goes above 56C. I also use a program called cpu stability test that runs 7 threads at the same time and pushed the system hard and again that never goes over 56C same for super p1.
in both cases the system was stable under these condictios @ 3500 with only 1.45vcore and the temps run a cooler.

Running dual prime 95 needed 1.51V @ 3500 to run stable and the temps shot up to 65C.

My plan is to use the system as it stands 3500@ 1.51V for a few days and then drop down top 1.5v and see how that goes. if i have no problems i will drop again until i find the vcore thats stable for what i need.
I dont do any distributed computing just a few games and vid editing / encoding of programs recorded from my pvr setup.
my 920D @ 4200 rig would encode an hour tv recorded from sage tv from 2gb to 500mb in 40 mins ish this new one does it in 20 so i am well happy.

I guess you can look at how you over clock in 2 ways what does it take to run the cpu at xxxx or how far can i push it with 1.xxvcore
for a 24/7 i would go with the safer bet of running the system on 1.4vcore and as high as it will run dual prime 95 or what ever you want to test for stability.

hmm the coretemp is not offset, that is the REAL temp of the die. There is no other REAL temp, aibooster/probeII are wrong, you don't measure cpu temps from the IHS....

i will install the ninja again but it's not that bad considering the low noise fan that comes with the ninja and it's still in the safe temp zone.

The e6600 i had on back order from ingram will be deliverd later today too but that ones staying at work.

Not that I'm a big fan of it, but did you say you had tried lapping?

Other than that it could just be the chip!

Change the fan on the Ninja if you have one? Get some better compound? Improve case air-flow? Use the process of elimination!

Coretemp reads the on die digital temperature sensor buried in the core. The offset is a normal deltaT between the cpu sensor and the motherboard thermistor which is read in the bios and by other poling programs from the external IHS. Aibooster/Probe are not necessarily wrong, they read the external sensor, a similar temperature provided by mounting an external thermocouple. But like you say the actual temperature is 65. People should say which one they're using.

tbh who cares what temp their IHS is. the only temp anyone cares about is that of the actual die.No point saying well my IHS is 50 degrees so its really cool if your die temp is 75 degrees..

Has anyone taken off a Conroe IHS yet?

just don't LIFT or LEVER the IHS, try to slide it off the main solder contact area and then gently lift it up..

Its only a reference, as its a parallel offset there is nothing wrong with using external temperatures if you know the deltaT from the core in relation to the throttling. And it always wise to use an independent real world non-software based temperature monitor that you know can't be buggy. It's relevent because its the external surface and ambient temperature that the heatsink/block dissipation calculations are based/specified. It's the same for any cooling solution including industrial, you have to specify materials and deltas based on the externals.

Well then the core heat goes directly to the heatsink rather than having to first be transferred to the IHS and then to the heatsink..
