You'd be surprised how many people do argue it. I just don't see how the AMD midrange 280's can use as much power as the their flagship, and NVIDIA's top cards.

I want more than just raw performance in a card.

Although, we'll just have to wait until NDA lifts, and see how the 290's really compare. :)

You don't happen to know anyone with a Mac Pro do you? Plug in a 280, and see if the OS X drivers support it like it does the 7970/50's?

my speculation on this is amd mostly focused on a card that will win performance crown over 780. so they won't perform much on mid range while nvidia also couldn't put a good card on market at that range too.

That's all well and good, but the mid range cards usually sell the most.

According to retailers like OCUK, they're also not allowed to bundle games with the 280 cards like they do with the 7xxx series cards.
So they're really just shooting themselves in the foot. You can pick up a 7950/70 for cheaper than a 280 at the moment, and get free games with it.

There's also a bit of a power discrepency between the 280's, 770/80's and now the 290's. They all use the same power, and will perform near each other. Price and power are the deciding factor for me, along with OpenCL, and Open GL performance.

yes all seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot but i like all the strategic moves amd had done on gpu side last 1 ,1.5 year. so i don't believe or don't want to believe they will do something this foolish after all that good moves.

I really don't like me too the rebrand of the 7970.

But, I'm not gonna buy It because I own one already. And I am always interested by the most powerfull single GPU at a resonnable price. So AMD/ATI is the good choice for this. I believe we are many there to think the same. Best GPU each generation.


And in the low end, They have the 260. That a lot of people will be interested in. Cheap, powerfull, low power, new technologies, ...


Yes, now there is games that are better for the 7970. But the move, is not so stupid. The 7970 will sell much faster than the 280, and finish the stocks. And after, for sure, AMD will lower the price of the 280 and add the games too.

Its the same card with a different look. I believe, nobody shoud care about this one still its not cheap as the original one.

They may be the new upper mid range, but they suck exactly the same power as last 2 years absolute high end: a lot. The same for temps. You know, because it's exactly the same inefficient chip. A rebrand is just that, the same thing with a different name and a lower price (most of the time).

NV rebrands suck. AMD rebrands suck the same.

It's a much bigger chip I imagine it will run into heat/voltage issues especially with its standard PCB.

Wait i put some crazy voltage in it ( lol i joke ) . as for the memory limit, i know the Phy size is smaller and will limit max mem speed, its a balance due to the 512bit bus and limit the size of it. ( The PHY size of Tahiti was monstruous anyway ).

if its not enough, we will need go for frankenstein style ( where is Sampsa ? ).

yes, but under ln2 is situation the same, worst then Tahiti, BUT 1,15 GHz Hawaii is monster with performance like 7990! (in many titles)

Launch product should be Hynix, ~5-5GBps with faster timings, perhaps Elpida later (especially after the factory fire) which runs at ~6GBps but has looser timings (performance at 6GBPs elpida is comparable to 5.4GBPs Hynix)

It isnt really surprising that hawaii clocks worse than tahiti being much larger chip.
However, from my understanding hawaii`s base clock is 800/850 so its lower than both 7970 and ghz ed . so in essence arent they overclocking similarly ?
Then theres special editions like lightning.

You search info on the final clock speed ? i see up to 1ghz in some slides ..

Huum, i think it come from the PHY who have been designed for take less transistors / size .. Hynix are in general the one used for reference design on AMD .. The PHY is maybe designed a bit stretch on memory speed, but again, with a 512bit bus, i believe the memory should not be important for overclocking .. timing well i dunno, it can be good to tight them if the speed cant be up that much. .. the 512bit bus and new PHY change a lot of things on memory side... i will watch clock speed of the core first and dont forcibly move the memory to much at first.

Thats one, but also few people "in the know" here and there were saying 800-850, 1ghz is the boost speed from all the information i gathered.

clock is dymanically changed from 800-1000 mhz, it depends on load and temp, it is the same like nvidia boost

typicl clocks in games is 920-960 mhz

The Anandtech article for the 280 showed that it mostly stayed at the max boost frequency during their tests, it probably has more to do with power draw than heat, though I'm sure it throttles when it gets hot.

I dont think he's speaking about the 280 .

Anyway, AMD have introduce TPE ( Temperature Predicting Enhancement ) when they have release the 7970 ghz edition. It dont reduce Boost clock speed due to heat, it predict the temperature impact on TDP.. so, no, it dont reduce clock speed, in reality it improve the boost speed by taking in account temperature effect on the TDP overtime ... ( Nvidia have introduce a similar features in Boost 2.0 then )
