you need to change your username to Q9650,i think your new cpu is upset:D
seriously though, the x38 isnt a great board for these quads, but still you should post
your bios settings for people to help.also is the maximus extreme an x38 board?

ok im not 1005 familiar with the x38 but have used the x48 and i do know the NB
voltage required for my quad at higher fsb was a lot.i would start with loosing up
your ram timing and focus on the cpu first. try more FSB term voltage-1.26v and cpu pll-1.57v
give it a little more vcore and test to see if its stable and then start dropping vcore.also try 1.42v NB
I have that same combo in my setup now under water. That Q9650 will go higher under that board if you give the NB the juice it needs. Mine operates in the 1.57V area to keep it stable crunching 24/7 at 4.05 GHz. Then again it's also watercooled and not using the stock cooling. My CPU Vcore is at 1.28 if I remember correctly (I'm at work right now).
yea thats what i was thinking too.i couldnt remember the NB voltage needed for my quad
on my rex but i did remember it was a lot more than the P45 chipset.
New overclock!!!!!
3.8ghz 425x9:rocker::worship:
Vcore in bios is 1.300v
x38 voltage is 1.61v
http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/9318/46280462.png
that cpu can go much higher, mark my words :P
I am worried about load temp it gets to 65degrees ! summer heat is holding me back! I can reach this OC thanks to my corsair h50 cooler! but with a vcore of 1.256volts at 3825mhz is simply impressive!!!!!!!!!
Just a heads up for all you 775 Quad o/cers out there (and dualies) - all 3 of my P45 boards are up for sale - all in great condition and fully functional:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=255084
I'm open to offers btw..
Q6600 - looks like you need a better board, you could probably go even further with lower volts on the USB3P, and you'd get to keep you DDR3! ;)
hey fellas,
not been OC'ing for a few months - hungry for more!!!
any pointer??

asus P5Q deluxe on 2301 bios
it took ages for me to get this OC stable - when i try an boot at 460 i get problems - i'm fully liquid cooled - so i'm not too bothered about high vCores -
i'm thinking - 470@1.3v vFSB : 1.28 and move my ram down to strap below as its only 1066
any tips??
update ... i'm now stable @ 4.212Ghz :) vCore @ 1.325v vFSB @ 1.3v pll @ 1.56v vNB @ 1.28v thats 468*9
boosted my 3d mark 06 cpu score up from 4.095Ghz by about 450 points!!
cheers!!! hey - i see in your sig you've got a q9650 @ 4.8Ghz - what board and what PLLvoltage u got?? do you think my 1.56v PLL is too high?? thats the only voltage i'm concerned about - i'm fully liquid cooled but i dont want to fry the circuits !!
any tips - whats your PPL voltage? and what gtl refs u use?? i'm on x0.675v for both - seems to work better and give higher Gflops output that when i had them on 0.667..
With 45nm ~1.60 vPLL is the soft limit, so keep it under that, preferably under 1.57v
Pretty sure NoGuru used a UD3P for those clocks, its widely understood to be the best board for overclocking quads.
Raw CPU stability (Prime95 small FFT's, LinX) is pretty easy to do on most boards up to a point, its Prim95 large FFT's and long blend runs that really expose instability. You may find it tough to pass especially with 4GB+ ram installed. You would want to run a few hours large FFT's or blend run to be sure you're stable.
thanks cryptik - gonna say - for a 533mhz fsb on nogurus quad - its got to be a gigabyte!
i use 20 loops of linx - then game really heavily for a weekend - i recon 20 loops linx is enough games is where i've found all my instabilites with all my other cpus - when p95 was 8 hours stable games BSOD - so since then i just do
20 loops linx and hardcore game for a few days!!! good enough for me!!
Sure whatever works for you man, stability is subjective anyway. Just passing on what a few of the Q9650 boys in here (and myself) prefer to do but it's all just personal choice of course. Most guys run vPLL between 1.50v -- 1.60v but lower the better, only raise a voltage if you need to!
.785 vREFs - i'm currently using .675 for my OC seems to like it and i've only got a vCORE of 1.325v
The ud3 reads refs differently from the p5q so you cant compare the numbers directly, the 0.785 on the ud3 is about the same as the .655 on the p5q and the 0.800 is about .665-.670 on the p5q.
Guys what is the best batch# of Q9650?
There are a few good ones, and there seems to be some variation between the chips within a batch. Have a look through this thread, there's lots of good examples.
systemviper is selling x3380. Even mfII would be enough for 9.5X.
500 FSB stable on the m2f is very unlikely tbh. 470 FSB large FFT and blend stable is all I could do. My chip is a good one too but the board wouldnt do any better. In fact my X48 REX did better.
Yeah i am trying to find a UD3P to replace my maximus formula x38 that is down right now. I would like to see what i can do with my q9650 now that i know there was a board made for them.
yet another update :) ..... 470*9 now at 4.230Ghz - Gflops gone up too - temps ok and 20 linx stable, 8 hours p95 stable too
i recon this chip will easily do 490*9 but i'm not so sure for 24/7 usage - its 4.23Ghz @ 1.325v 24/7 - i might go to 480mhz with 1.35v - i'll see!!
Nice work, my P5Q-D topped out at 473 FSB, but it isn't a great example and had an A2 rev NB. Does your board have an A2 or A3 rev NB? (check CPUZ in mainboard tab). Is it prime 95 large FFT stable?
i've got the A2 nb!!!! gonna get 4.4Ghz out of this beast - i've had it at 480mhz this week and trying to stablize it - but 470 is good 4 my 24/7 - until 480 is stable!!!!!!:)
its 20 linx loops stable and i only do 6-8 hours P95 as its a waste to stress HW for that long as its never going to happen in games etc..
sorry cryptik - to answer your original q - i think i use large fft yes - i'm not using blend as my ram is running 1:1
Guys! I`ve just bought Q9650!
Batch is L842B847.
Nice one, hopefully you'll like it
Congrats she is a lil beastie :) lot of fun to play with :up:Quote:

I will get to home on Sunday :) Some numbers soon
well I have been waiting for my cpu pot to get here so I can put my i5 650 and the memory under cold for the Gigabyte H55N challenge, so instead of waiting around I hooked up my 775 rig which is new to me.
Nkresho's old chip (C batch, 1.15 VID), UD3R and GSkill PI 9600's
http://i35.tinypic.com/2uy56b7.png
I can not run linx as it gets too hot even under my loop (EK Supreme HF>Swiftech Micro Res>XSPC RX360 rad w/ 6 SanAce fans in push pull>MCP655) and just restarts however prime blend is looking great:up:
That is an awesome cpu. Nice work.
all this batch L847C are very good clockers if you could beat the temps :S, still to find time to get a good breath to build my watercooling, but my temps 3.2/1volt linx->~60... push-pull ultra 120x@ 1000rpm, dictate a watercooling setup as fast as possible...
Yeah I have an L847C too, it's very hot :D
Vid = 1.2125
great so see this thread alive again
*congrats on the chip l0ud ;)
I think NKresho got the best chip that I have seen from that C batch. I doubt though without some kind of xtreme cooling it will do 4.5ghz linx. My chip is a 1.175vid, it passed blend at 4500mhz 14hrs but have tried many times to get it to pass linx at 4500, temps get to hot and it just wont do it, even with cold AC blowing on my rad. Only reason to keep trying would be to get the chip in that linx thread, other than that I prefer a good blend run over linx any day to test stability.
http://i34.tinypic.com/ayox2g.png
super stable and I think I can lower some volts:up:
It is so nice to finally find a golden chip.
thats impressive L0ud!!! what sort of voltages are you using - PLL,vTT,GTLs etc....
and have you run linx yet??? interesting to know the sort of Gflops this beast pumps out!!
I can get it stable at 4.3 GHz on air (prime only, LinX way too hot), but I'm board limited after that as I'm using an X48 Rampage Extreme. Does very well for an X48 though, better than the P5Q Deluxe and Maximus II Formula I tried with it.
The hot ones are seriously hot, hope you have good watercooling!
100% airconditioned air going through my 220 rad and absolutely no ambientQuote:
The hot ones are seriously hot, hope you have good watercooling!
air in the WCing setup.AC coming from the vent hose is about 5c in early morning
and 10c at the hottest part of the day.ugly but it works
http://i38.tinypic.com/29wa0yh.jpg
Thats a great idea for the rad radaja, any condensation issues?
none so far, been doing it on and off for a year or more now.
linx gets way too hot and I get a restart before the first pass no matter what the settings or voltages, this chip shoots in to the 80's like its no bodies business so no more linx until it goes under cold which will be very soon and then just then maybe. I also have a higher VID chip coming which I hope will do 4.5 linx stable.
my voltages are all default except:
vcore 1.37500
vtt 1.34
MCH 1.4
VDIMM 2.12
the reference values are .785/.800
very true, room has to be very cool too.i have two AC units running and ambients are also very cool, thats how my ram and MB/NB stays cool too.:D
this setup works better in my case with the ac blowing through the rad into the case so it all very cold all the time:up:
You must have a pretty low Dew Point in your computer room due to the AC. Nice idea with the rad cooling
you guy make me wanna pull the pi 9600 again and up the voltages , with those i seem to not get pass 4250 stable , me and andressio tried a bit but think 1.1 board seems to not like pi 9600
i put a thermochill 120 on case and plan on havin a/c ducted to it:D
:yepp:
but i dont like to freeze:rofl: and if water gets too cold gotta put a/c temp higher to avoid condensation
if i were to run linx i leave it to the max a few min before i start
You were right, guys :)
I oced my Q9650 for 450x9 for now @ 1,25volts. 5 hour Prime64bit running is stable.
Couldn`t you post your 500x8 and 500x9 bios setting for Q9650 on Maximus II Formula please
Some pics soon
i dont think there are very many stable 8/9x500 templates for the Q9650+ maxIIformula
And i need performance level 8 ofcourse :)
i think grnfinger had a Q9650 at 9x500 in the maxII thread
I'm slooooooooowly (as time allows) moving from Q9650/x48 Blackops to one of those newish gigabyte p45 usb3 mobos. This is not something I wanted to do but that's life. Reaching Q9650/450-460 fsb on x48, with preferred settings/stability/AIR-COOLING, took a fair amount of effort.
I REALLY hope there are no Q9650 issues with these gigabyte p45 usb3 mobos :D.

andressergio has done great with his EP45-USB3 and his quads:DQuote:

aaa yes you will have HORRIBLE stability issues :D

Sergio is a master of stability.
I had a -WTF- moment yesterday with that motherboard. As I was building up OS, the system dropped off the face of the planet into some sort of limbo/endless reboot situation. I spent about 5 minutes cursing (as in "GIGABUTT!!!, I'M TOO OLD FOR THIS NONSENSE!" and 10s more words :D ) before I regained my composure. After stripping all non-essential components, rechecking connections/cabling, looking for debris, (clearing CMOS alone did nothing), etc, the motherboard once again came to life. It sprung back with a warning about a POST error and suggested I choose "last known good" from its menu.. OK... :D
All is well, for now.......... :D
XmX
EDIT : For the record, the above happened at stock speeds (NO OC) with a (test-bed) Celeron E1200 @ F2d rom.
Hunh.. really? ..or maybe this will be like the x48 blackops adventure/experience, where they took about 2 yrs to dial-in a beta bios that fixed up most of the known bugs. :D (I'm actually impressed they went this far, considering how the quantum force group was gutted by foxconn - post-2008 economic-meltdown fears.)
I'm hoping for more from Gigabyte. Come on guys, I don't want to buy ASUS boards in the future. :D
XmX
Due to previous experiences elsewhere, I also avoid AUTO whenever I can. However, after this little event, I became slightly paranoid and set as many things as I could to AUTO... Everything seems OK right now, but I suppose I'll have to make some changes.
It's a shame this USB3P has no integrated boot-code hexadecimal led display.
I hope I don't have to invest in something like this : http://www.akl-it.com/en/our-product...179-post-probe :scope:

You have a moster chip, congrats
just run 20 loops linx @ 4.230Ghz but with ram @ 1128Mhz - altered GTL refs to 0.670 and passed! but with highest cpu temp of 70c - is this OK? nothing else i do appart from linx will give temps of anything close to this = P95 is normally 15c lower than linx and games gives me high 40s
dropped gtl refs to 0.660x and dropped vtt to 1.28v getting solid 56Gflops will post screeny soon:) 81c cpu under linx load - i suppose thats ok as nothing comes close to this amount of stress, not game, not P95 etc.. it was only for 20 mins!!
EDIT: for some reason lowering those gtl refs from 0.670 to 0.660x has increased my gflops output - but increased my temps?? why is that anyone????
been messing with OC and i get this odd thing happeneing:
My load temps using 1.3375v were 82c (20 loops LinX)
But when I drop my vCore to 1.33125v my load temps are 72c ( 20 loops LinX)
why the massive drop in temps with only a 0.00625v decrease in vCore?
p5q deluxe.
I got this chip for nearly a few months now and I kept it at 4GHz with no problems. I saw everyone is hitting much higher so I tried to hit 480x9=4.32. No matter how I mess with the voltages, I always fail Linx. The included SS is set at 480 FSB and multi at 8.5 so I can be sure the mobo is not the limiting factor for 480 FSB. Any ideas?
Batch # L0826B006
Vtt 1.4
Vcore 1.35 BIOS LLC ON
vmch 1.26
Vpll 1.59
Vmem 1.96, loosened timings (stable as seen in SS. Will tune later.)
Tried Vtt 1.44
Vcore 1.425
vmch 1.34
No go...
Attachment 107825
EDIT:
Tried 1.5 vtt
1.45 vcore
1.4 vmch
Still no go. Looks like I hit the limit with this chip? The highest I can get stable regardless of voltages is 4.18. I thought the B were monsters...
@pogiman:
List all of your bios settings using this template:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...postcount=2378
Yeah what are your skews and ref's at pogiman? They will make or break your OC.
Here are my settings. I tried with one stick and four sticks of RAM, still freezes. Just the fact that its pretty stable by just lowering the multi makes it seems that the CPU just cannot go over 4.2ghz
@NoGuru - my ref are set to 66%. I tried 65% and system freezes as well. I havent tried higher yet.
