Hey, I need some help with my computer OC.
All I want is a 4ghz oc'ed cpu with ram at default or higher speeds and rock solid/stable performance. I got everything hardware/software, where do I start?
Computer stats:
cpu - e8500, ocz vindicator heatsink, Batch # Q817A226
mobo- p5e3 premium wifi@n
ram - ocz Reaper ddr3 12800, 1600mhz @ 7-7-7-20 default
psu - corsair hx520w psu, upgrading to 620w when i go CF
Video - 4850 with accelero s1 attached will get a second one later.

I have tried a bunch of different settings and voltages, nothing seems to be stable? It will either boot to BSOD, or it will boot up then fail every stress test, and possibly freeze on the desktop later on. :shrug:
What gives? It would be nice to get a 4ghz OC, but at this point I am just OCing a little bit and not even that seems to work. I need help. :mad:
And then I see the post above me with a Toyten getting 4ghz, 571 fsb with 1.27 volts which seems insane. Damn You "Shakes Fist"! Awesome overclock.

First of All, The Penryn are not as sensitive as Conroe on the vcore part, you can boot, load windows, and use you computer with to low vcore, and it still works pretty good, but when it comes to more demanding, like games etc, it crashes, i can boot and use programs at much lower vcore than it needs to be "stable", check that out first, you need more than you think, second, this board is tricky to get stable as hell, very sensitive on the settings, specially NB volts, so its not allways logical, when you think, hey im using TIGHT settings, think i will juice it up, when its not needed, with 1-2 steps away from what the board wants, it crashes, not all dividers are working so well what i've experienced, 333 do work best though.
You can start by setting som default values, at 4ghz you wont need THAT high fsb, im guessing you got a 8400? so 9x445 are 4ghz, not getting so high on memspeed then though, but try that first, use PL7, and pretty sloppy RAM timings ant first, set Twister to strong, and NB about 1.45, vFSB you dont need to change i think, wont do much keep that at 1.10 until problems wont be resolved... can u post some of your settings? maybe can help more from that.
This board is indeed tricky... or is my memory acting up?
I got the 1333 2x2 GB Enhanced Bandwith kit from OCZ but it seems the memory is causing instability. The mem should be capable of 1333mhz at 6-6-5-20 settings but I now have it at 1200mhz 8-8-7-24 and it appears not to be stable. A quick memtest86 test of 2 passes of test 5 shows no errors but when using memtest in windows it produces an error in 10 seconds. Also S-pi is crashing instantly. Prime95 seems ok in small FFT but fails instantly in blend. I think the processor can handle it but the RAM is not feeling well. Could e.g. a high voltage on FSB mean trouble for the mem?

The last stress test, the computer locked up at the desktop after an hour or so of Orthos. I will post some more later, but I am trying different settings now.

Ok, sounds like a little of my problem, I suddenly had some problems with games crahsing, Blend of Orthos, Prime, and OCCT crashing on MEM stress, i just wtf? it was stable...and had just getting bad? i tried more vDIMM, more VNB, nothing helped,I just OK, NOOW, the ram has gone bad and goin through this degradation due my little higher vdimm,ARGH, so i took out the RAM , wiped the metal off, and blowed in the ram slots, changed place on them, not diffrent slots, just the other ram in the other ram place and vice versa, fired it up, tried the same settings as it was stable before, and what now? it was stable again, haha, sometimes it can be easy, but mostly not :S.
9-9-9 are in my oppinion to sloppy :) at 1600 you would easy keep it at 7-7-7-18 without much volt at all, im using 2.08 for my 1870Mhz 7-7-7-18 so you could easy use without breaking warranty, and you should easy use pretty tight timings at this low fsb/cpu/ram speed.
If the computer is freezing in blend, its only vNB or VDIMM thats wrong.. the board can handle my settings without problems and they are tight at this speed..

and this is working great, and are giving me 12000mb/s read, almost 10k in write and the other one, Latency 42.5~
for you i would go like me, except the voltages and the cpu speed, you could probably leave the ram at 1.8 1.9v .. the NB i dont really know, you have to change a notch at a time, and then get back in win and test it again, if its to much, it will crash earlier, and the same with to low, it want what it want and doesnt tolerate error :P
and what slots are you using? Dont use the first ones, use 2 and 4. Try taking them out and do as i did, sometimes it gets some "dirt" like a layer of someting on the metal trace on the RAM, try using some aceton, strong alcholic fluid with a tops and clean there, and blow in the ram slots, sometimes it gets dust in there and couses problems, and if you are unlucky, the board just doesnt like ur RAM :) what RAM do u have btw?

Well I do happen to use slot 1 and 3, so I will change to slot 2 and 4 in a bit, that sounds like a decent idea. I currently use OCZ Reaper 1600mhz ddr3 ram @1.9v which a few people here use on this board. People have been complaining about OCZ platinum ram not working on this mobo, but exchanging them for the Reapers seems to do the job.
I just bought a better CPU cooler, OCZ Vendetta 2, which dropped my temps from like 65 load to 48-51 ish. This has already proven to give me more head room to mess around with, as I can boot on settings that I could not before. I have no clue if they would be stable, just able to boot at this point. Most of the time if I get the computer to boot it will just freeze like 1 hours into an Orthos stress test. Is this any Indication of something?

After reading a lot about this mobo and my RAM on the OCZ forums I got the impression that more (volt) is not always better. I could run benchmarks at 3600mhz and even 3800mhz (Q9450) but the RAM would always produce errors in memtest and in prime even when running at 1200mhz (against 1333mhz stock) with very relaxed timings. To try and get things stable I increased the voltages of almost everything to pretty high levels. Vcore 1,42v e.g.
My cpu and NB are watercooled so the temps were ok.
So yesterday evening I thought.. lets start from scratch and start with very low voltages on NB, PLL VTT etc. I just increased them by 2 or 3 ticks and go with 8x425. To my surprise the memory was now stable at 1350mhz and 6-5-5-20 timings. No errors in memtest. With 1,25v on Vcore I tried to run prime but an error appeared soon. After a couple of tries I put my cpu on 1,3v and prime ran stable now for almost an hour (went to bed as it was 02:00) I just finished an hour of OCCT test and no errors anymore.
Wow.. with very low voltages on NB etc. it runs stable at 3400mhz... not bad for now. I read somewhere that instead of increasing Vcore you can also try to increase GTL for the CPU... is that right? So when I am going to try with higher FSB shall I try to increase the cpu GTL values instead of increasing Vcore? I think I'm slowly cracking the code of this mobo and hope I can get a little further than 3,4Ghz.
But the lesson is... more is not always better!!
I am playing at 640 FSB right now, it gets really shaky over this with air cooling (645 broken screen, 650 freezes), and single channel does not seem to help. LN2 is going to bring some ~20MHz FSB gain, but I would feel a little comfortable with more headroom. Anybody else playing very high FSB on this board?

Mine boots at 620 Dual Channel, and I use 1.71 vNB. I guess I have to play with it some more :D
Question:
I have the computer at 9.5x400, and it seems to be running fine. I did a few PI calcs, played some games and did some video encoding on the computer. Temps are way better then before thanks to the new cpu cooler. Its runs at like 2400x6 or something when not doing huge intensive calulations, but it is using the 400 fsb which would normally freeze on me.
My question is, Is this an indications of a decent starting point, since the computer has been going for a few days with no issues? I have not put it to the full stress test yet. Obviously if I stress test it, that will determine if its good or not. I am scared to see it freeze again LOL!!!!
I am at my second board and my third ram kit.
All who think about getting this board should think twice.
You should have realy good understanding of bois tweaking or you will get a seriuoes headache!!

I think the problems lie at the northbridge memory controller.
-weird SPD's
-no XMP's
-lost of problems in dualchannel mode (ocz platimun runs stable at rated specs in single channel)
Could some people post some screen shots of their memmories SPD's?
Because of the three kits i have used, non showed sensible spd values.
Is anyone using 2 velociraptors in raid0 on this board?
I was having the same feeling yesterday but today I'm more optimistic. I could not get my RAM stable even when running them at lower speeds and very relaxed timings. By setting all very low voltages on the Bios settings I got my memory stable at 1350mhz 6-5-5-20 (1,86v Vdimm).
I'm not sure what will happen when I increase the FSB but I have the feeling that I have a better idea of what to do now with the board and if I can't get any higher than 3400mhz on a Q9450 is not so bad as 24/7 setting.
I can run 400*8 and rams at 1600 stable but if i try to push the fsb more i get errors in prime very quickly... even if i set the multi to 6x and the rams to ~1300. I tried to play tweak some settings but with no success :(
Altough it's prime stable like all the others tests, i'm geting random bluescreens even at stock speed.
I'm now testing at 3500mhz (8x438) with the RAM at 1400mhz (6-6-5-20 timings still) The RAM passed a few memtest (test 5) runs and I just finished an hour OCCT mix.
Prime95 small FFT failed on me after 3 minutes so the CPU is not stable yet. Beware that my NB voltage is now at 1,27v which is much lower than what I see around here.
Ok, I managed to find a good 24/7 setup with this awsome board, along with good memories/cpu.

Question:
I noticed I have been using a 4pin cable for the 12v connector. I do indeed have the ability to use the 8pin cable for the 12v motherboard connector.
Will this improve overclocking? What is the big difference?
