The OCZ Platinum are the cheapest, the Corsair Dominators are suprisingly the most expensive. I've heard good things about Team and G.Skill, Corsair seems to be an old favourite, and OCZ is pretty aggressive on pricing.
My goals are:
Stability
Ease of use (i.e. can i plug the modules in and boot the system on the first go?)
Minimal overclocking (though that would be much farther down the road once I gain some knowledge; for now everything is stock)

It seems that the p5wdh needs enough vcore to boot at stock multi. X6800 stock multi is 11. This meens if fsb is 400mhz, it needs enough vcore to post at 400x11=4400mhz. and then after post it drops multi to what its set at in bios. seems that the p5b mobo does not do this in the same way. it is posting with setts that are in the bios. My question ..is the p5wdh mobo the only mobo that does this or are there others? I feel that is most important thing asus needs to fix on this board.

Using 1707 bios...
right after I change some bios settings, the pc will not post. The fans keep running, but the cpu will not boot. These are mild overclock settings (3.2ghz). This used to never happen. The pc will only start when stock bios settings are loaded.
Can anyone tell me whether the Evercool VC-RE will fit on the northbridge of the P5WDH? If not, are there any other fans I should consider?

I have tried 5 different kinds of memory on this baord. It seems that all memory that i have tried is only truly stable to around 920-930mhz. any more then that and programs like nero vision or dvd shirnk will fail but super pi will go forever and ever.

No matter what I did it came out to be a big raid, I set the jumper 100 or 001 came out the same to be big raid , my 2 74gb add up to 139gb showing on the system and EZ - Raid manager utility.
Well RAID-0 is just striped with no redundancy, so it will be the size of both drives combined, but the method of writing the data is such that each successive block will be written to an alternate disk, where-as on a JBOD setup, sucessive data doesn't necessarily get split between the two disks (and is therefore slower to read and write than RAID 0).Quote:

Hopefully a P5W DH owner could answer this for me. Can the board support 6 SATA drives *without* using RAID? I'm concerned about the 2 orange SATA ports which are used for the 'EZBackup' feature. Will those two ports also allow for just regular SATA useage?

Nope I tried using them both as normal sata but board wouldn't POST properly with a drive in the left port. If you remove the ez-raid jumpers you can use ther right orange port as Port 1 on the ICH7R which is what I'm doing, and 3 more drives on the other ICH ports. I'm just not using one of my 200gb atm because of it. There is the Jmicron one but you need to enable that in bios and get the bootrom screen every boot and also trail a long sata cable around my case to get to it..Quote:

Reading Silicon Image 4723 datasheet and seeing this:

- pulled all jumpers in hopes it might be the mysterious "JBOD" function
- had to use Seagate HD tools to write "zeros" to clear MBRs for two 7200.10 400G previously used for RAID0
- regardless of jumper configurations, I can only get one port (EzRAID 1) to act as a non-RAID drive
Makes sense, since the Sil4723 is connected to one ICH7R lane (2nd) and is acting as an extension.
It appears the host ICH7R is not capable of "Port-Multiplier" mode or PM mode cannot be set properly via MB jumpers.

I submitted a tech support ticket to ASUS regarding the shutdown/reboot issue, where the machine turns off, but then turn on again a second later - forcing you to hold in the button.
It is annoying, but I only turn it off at night. I just can't set my pc to turn off after a long encoding session or whatever... or it will just turn itself back on.
I checked the USB and wake-up events, and neither one is the problem.
When I called ASUS, they pointed me to an ACPI driver on the website, but it seems that driver is only for Win2000.
of course this doesnt answer the question but i've tested both the 2 port Sata Sil pcie card
and now Bytecs jmicron 363 actually ) 2 internal sata ii ports, 2 esata ports and 1 ide pata internal port $39 buxs newegg. dig this, was screwing around with it cause the embedded mobo jmicron port (ide) worked 4 some but not others.. well once i updated the software to current even that port works). Eidently when these are advertsed as Raid, u can force them into non Raid modes 2 (dep on drivers used if u can find em).. So some of u still out there like myself who couldnt update cause u get bluer screens andthe like. have 2 resort to updating the intel matrix driver then the jmicron, and on and on. or delete the partition (move it) before rebuilding all yer stuff otherwise u do get that blue kiss of death screen)..al this is if u r rebuilding but still have the past os installed..

eSATA should be way quicker than firewire. You are literally attaching another SATA drive directly to the board Vs firewire which is rated at only 400/800mbs at best.
Re the drive letters... if your firewire is getting confused (and I can't understand why it should be), you can always go into drive manager and give some of the less relevant drives different letters, like a Music drive "M" & a Videos drive "V". Could be worth a try.
It may be due to having a memory card reader with 5 drive letters, with a gap (don't know why) between my last hard drive and those, and the USB drive ends up in that gap. However it happened, when I plug in a Firewire drive (DVD or HD), nothing like a drive letter asignment happens to let me use it. There are a few letters after the reader, but I assumed Firewire didn't like to get high letters.Quote:

It should automatically assign a letter... the next available one typically. I would move the card readers UP... Right-Click My Computer, left click Manage>Storage>Disk Management. You should be able to give the card-reader M/N/O/P/Q there which will free up all the ones after your real drives.

Hi , i've a couple of questions about the p5w-dh.
Anyone tried some of that Crucial 10th Aniversary Memory ( micron d9 i'm told ) in the p5w-dh, can i use the manual timings or will i still suffer from the spd bug, that i have with this Geil.
There's a extra hard disk that appears in other operating systems , called Config Disk. Its related to the silicon image pos no matter what i do i cant disable it. It affects Linux / OSX / Acronis True Image / Partition Magic amongst others.

I have three sata drives connected to the ICH7R connectors, but I am not booting to a sata drive but an IDE drive atm. I wan to add two 73G 10,000RPM sata drives on the EZ Backup connectors in RAID0 config and ultimately install my OS and boot to them, is this possible and easy to do?

Yes, but considering that you are going with 10k RPM drives in RAID 0 one would assume that you are interested in getting the best performance. If that is correct then the EZ-RAID is a bad choice because you are craming both drives into one of the ICH7R SATA II ports (what would be port 2) via the SIL4723. I think you may also lose NCQ using EZ-RAID. For best performance use the ICH7R directly.Quote:

2) What is "anchoring" the hooks in place currently? I tried to do some elementary research on other, third-party, northbridge cooling products, and all seem to use the existing hooks, none explaining what to do in the dire case of one coming off.
3) If the hook that came off ends up being lost, does anyone know how I can acquire a new one, outside of manufacturing my own? I guess this is only applicable if the board is capable of modification to re-insert the hook.
Please advise.
Recently flashed to latest BIOS, sorry don't have rev num, problem is vcore adjustments don't seem to stick past 1.4. I have it set to 1.45 in BIOS but all monitoring programs read it as 1.39/1.40 in windows. I chose not to reset cmos after flash, could this have anything to do with it.
ETA This is a new system, not sure what vcore was doing before flash.

Possible Repairs:
- assumes excellent soldering skills and tools

- third party NB clips created too much tension on hooks
- did my "preventative" repair with silver solder and hooking ends, as opposed to leaving them straight
- used teflon insulating washer around "hooked" ends

Yeah man... that would make total sense. Give you the ICH7R connectors to play with for your O/S-App's Raid0 array.
In addition to bichi's suggestions, if you don't want to solder I'd suggest something like JB Weld for reattaching the original or a replacement hook. There's also the option of making a warranty claim.Quote:

Even just having something that will go through the holes and right angle themselves at the bottom of the motherboard so they won't be just pulled right out would be good.
More than likely, I'm going to make a little bracket and hook it off the motherboard mounting screw right next to the hook area. The only crummy part of this is that when I'm going to want to remove my motherboard, the NB will have to come out and be cleaned, re-thermalled, and reapplied.
I'll take pics of what I end up doing and paste so you guys see. I know I'm pretty excited by the challenge and hope that I won't have to buy another 250$ motherboard.
Btw- I don't think I'm going to be able to send it in for warranty since I took off the original NB heatsink and cut the heatpipe next to where the MOSFETS sit. :)

Hi guys, I just got a new mobo which is Rev 1.04G, anyone out there with the same Rev version? I'll be testing it out this weekend.
Guys...i have a question...ive noticed (im oceing right now) that after 35 minutes of orthos at 400x8 (1.4vcore) there is something in the mobo that starts making this really high pitched sound...is there anything i can do to stop this horrible whining? it really freaks me out.
Weird thing: the noise seems to stop when i switch from window to window...scroll or things like that(for a brief moment that is).
EDIT: The noise stopped...orthos keeps running... ^o) REALLY weird...it seems to be doing it the first 35 mins or something like that.

There is a good thread on the normal asus forums regarding exactly how the ez-raid/jmicron/ich7 works, what you're capable of doing, and the recommendations. I was thinking of doing something similar, since I have two 74gb raptors in raid0 on the ez-raid ports, and wanted to do a raid5 on the ich7. However, soon as I try and turn on AHCI or RAID for the ICH7, I'm unable to boot, and evenmoreso, it won't even recognize the array.
Best bet is to stay away from the ez-raid. There are many posts showing how slow it is compared to the other ports using the ICH7 chipset. Mostly, you have a i/o bandwidth issue, because those two ez-raid ports share one 300mb/sec sata2 channel. A little more effort in the beginning with loading your OS with the f6 floppy containing the intel raid drivers will go a long way in performance.

If you remove both EZ jumpers you can use the right EZ-Backup port as the 4th ICH7 port
