Need some advice: No speculation please, I can do that just fine myself.

I am now running a Opty146 @ 2900 mhz (100% stable) (H2O)

I am contemplating on buying a Opty 170 and tryout some dual core happyness... but !

Will I be getting better preformances from the dually even if I dont get it higher than 2600? I have read that on some benchmarks 2900 single = 2600 dual.
Will my system feel faster with the dual running 300mgz slower?

All questions I am asking myself..

Any of you guys actually try both?

Dual core is the future.

I gave up an FX57 @ 3.4ghz in favor of dual core at 3ghz and never looked back.

In everyway it is superior to single core

yeap my dual core 165 at 2.6GHz beats the crap out of my old 144@2.9GHz......3D/PCMARK/games/encoding/everyday stuff....dual core is great :D i actually scored my highest ever 3DMARK scores with dual core rather than single core even though it runs slower..... ;)

Took a Sandra benchy of CPU arithmatic and multimedia vs fx57/55/53 and the 4800x2 vs my humble dual opty 165 @ 2600. This what your looking for?

Coz of the high HTT on CPU. Havn't had much time to tweak timings on the memory yet so all the memory settings are at auto in bios (inc divider) apart from the 1T setting, I guess thats what the mobo has set them at for stability. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to memory timings anyway and as I am running raid 0 I dont really want to corrupt my install until I get everything backed up. All my efforts have gone into the cpu atm as I'm still burning it in.

I just put 1.66 on mine for a little while and was able to get into windows at 2.8ghz. I ran super pi, but it failed instantly. I want to put more, but I'm scared I'll burn the core up. I probably would do great with this thing and some water cooling:p:

I think anything over 1.6 is asking for trouble on a Dual Core Opty.

Looks like my PSU may be the problem.

I was getting a bsod SuperPi 32mb 2.9 GHz @ 1.53V.

I disconneceted my other hard drive and dvd-rw.

passed 32mb.. 26m 05s (my fastest time ever) probably could get it under 26m if i wasnt multitasking while benching.

Failed within two hours upped it a bit more and BSOD whilst priming and gaming on line - so it looks like it needs the 1.5V thats 1.3x + 200mv option in the bios

I put 1.6 V (DMM measured) for 2.70 GHz to get dual prime 20 hours (that means failed after 20 hours).

It's a tough call. We have one person who burned one up at 1.65 (although I don't know whether that was 1.65 reported in sensors or set in BIOS).

But I am doing prime-stable overclocking only, so to speak. I wonder whether slowly going to prime limits can ever short-term damage the CPU. After all it would start acting up in software first. (yes I know high volts always do long-term damage).

Does anybody remember who was the user who lost a DC at 1.65 V?

Almost finished testing the OEM 170 0530 I got from NewEgg earlier this week. Looks like 2.7GHz (1.45v) is as high as I can go with reasonable voltage. I can't get it prime stable at 2.8GHz this side of 1.55v. Core 1 is the one that always lets me down.

I'm a little disappointed that this Opty is not as good as some 0530's, but it appears to be better than a lot of other 170's. I've got 10% more performance than my X2 4400+ at $100 less, so it's a definite win.

BTW I discovered that apparently CnQ on an Opteron is not the same as on an X2, and as such I was not able to enable it. However, I found the RightMark CPU Clock Utility that seems to do just as good a job. In fact, because it's fully configurable, I much prefer it to the AMD CPU drivers.

Yes, but I disabled CnQ in BIOS.

Yes I had this running at 2.95ghz with some stability (2 hours prime?) and then I started playing with some stuff and fried my board. I was doing that with a ram divider and now im trying to get it stable 1:1 but it just isn't working for me too much higher than 2.6ghz. I know that my ram is capable of >300 mhz but it has been a while since I've done that and I don't really remember how I had it configured. Finals are next week too so I haven't had a whole lot of time :(

Alright, I'm completely aggrevated with my opty. It won't even prime stable at 2.4 with 1.55 volts and lowering the memory divider. Any ideas on how I can get monarch to swap me out a new one. I have a 90 day warranty.

i have my 170 at 260x10 w/ 1.45v
the ram is on a 9/10 divider, it is running at 236@3-3-3-8
so far prime hasnt given me any errors :)

Sure, just call them and tell 'um that your 170 will only OC 400MHz and your pissed! I'm sure they'll be begging to take it back.... :slapass:

Well seems 2700-2750mhz is best stable i can get and 2800mhz benchable right now - have to wait to get some better cooling to go higher ;) :)

For now broke my previous PCmark05 high score of 7,689

Pcmark05 = 7,710 (currently 6th fastest PCmark05 score on the ORB with 'Only highest score/user' criteria used)

Go 1.45 and you should be fine 2.5 dual prime stable. Make sure your RAM can handle it or use a divider. I'm running at that speed 24/7 with no glitch.

Welcome to the club... my OSA170 0534 SPMW was the same :( so I promptly sold it off to minimize the depreciation.
