If you see the difference from your seagate raid to your new raid 0 128kb stripe intel drives, I think the speed upgrade should definitely make you more than happy.
Even more when you know you can easily gain more than 300mbs in read speed once you make the move ti i7.
I say great purchase, enjoy those amazing 0.1 seconds while loading call of duty hahaha
Btw, I need to know how fast your PC boots now, what better than having an SIIE owner tell me how this board boots with SSDs in RAID.
Here something interesting. The first run I did with one drive stand alone it was still under the raid controller in the BIOS I just set it to 1 drive spanning. Anyways I decided to check and see if they need a BIOS update, Intel gives you a bootable CD iso to do the updates. After booting it could not find the drive...reading through the instructions it says you can't do it if the drive is under RAID. So I removed both drives from the raid controller in the bios and re-booted with the cd. BINGO both drives detected and new FW applied. Fired up Vista and setup the drive as standalone. New benchmark for single drives is much better. Not certian is this is because of the FW or being off Nvidia raid controller. More testing needed.
Slim: I'll let you know how win7 boots in a few days, going to play around with them a bit first.

Well upto a few days ago TRIM was not supported if you RAID your drives period. Intel just released TRIM support for RAID (excludes RAID5) for their own chipsets. No word on Nvidia doing this in the future, I wouldn't hold my breath as they are out of the chipset business.
I'm going to try to manually TRIM the drives using the Intel SSD tool box by removing the drives from the raid controller in the BIOS, I actually tired it last night(the tool said raid not supported) but I think I may have had to reboot, ran out of time. Gotta test again. Either the tool will not allow you to do anything if you have anything under raid or I just needed to initialize the drive first. Intel says they are planning to upgrade the toolbox to support RAID.
The RAID performance numbers are hard to ignore(go back a page Sangrak to see RAID #'s) plus you get a reasonable amount of space to install OS and apps. 150GB formatted.
Well Slim I've installed Win7 64bit on the SSD's in RAID 0 128K stripe. Applied most of these Win7 tweaks. Created a 1GB RAM drive for IE's cache.
All I can say is Wowsors, she is quick. Browsing is very fast, Adobe photoshop elements 7 loads up so quick(superfetch/prefetch is disabled). Boot up/shut down is very fast even after I've added the time to load the RAM drive image. I'm and SSD convert for sure. I benched the SSD's right after Win7 install and after I installed a whole wack load of apps. Performance is actually slightly better after apps. I'm serioulsy considering 2 more SSD's to use as a Games drive. OS and Apps on one RAID 0 160GB, Games on another 120GB RAID 0 and use my 2 500GB conventional drives in RAID 0 to hold movies and music.
Right after Win7 installed no apps.

I cant wait to move to SSDs, this numbers are just SWEET on the S2E.
Still no TRIM when using RAID and Nvidia chipset...but performance is decent right now. This has the potential to change which is why I have been benching as I go. I'll keep an eye on how the performace does over time. All my shots are neatly saved in this thread, for reference.Quote:

I tried to use Intel's SSD tool box with the drives connected outside of the RAID controller under Vista and it kept saying RAID not supported. I think this may have been because my other conventional drives were under RAID at the same time. Picked up a rosewill dus100 esata dock... It works great when the Jmicron controller isn't crashing/or crashing my system... The standard controller that comes with win7 doesn't work...

I found an article that compares different SSD controllers using AHCI vs. IDE modes. I'm not sure how credible the site is, but it's an interesting read. According to their benchmarks, the Sandforce controller used in the Intel SSD's benefit from using AHCI, but not by a drastic amount. Overall, the comparison doesn't seem to favor either modes.
The article states that TRIM can be used in IDE mode, but I'm pretty certain that is incorrect. Here's a link to the article, if you're interested in giving it a read.

Hey Trigger5521 thanks so very much for sharing this it's much appreciated. I too have been considering the upgrade and actually have a pre order on a 480. My only concern is bottle necking the CPU. I wonder of you could do a standard / default run of 3DMVantage with no changes or modification to the settings.ini except turning off the feature test if you want. For comparison sake I have provided a link of my S2E with 2 GTX285 SLI & PhysX enabled. Since we have very similar systems I would be very interested to see this comparison if you can help? You may need to set DX10 for example, I thinks the key is to run the test with the same settings that I have which is the program defaults, however mundane, in order to compare apples to apples This would be very helpful to other, with varying configs who may be considering the same type upgrade.

hmmm that's not very promising. I see you have 4x2GB memory and from what I know on the subject,
very few are able to run 8GB all four Dimm slots loaded at rated spec above 1100 8-8-8- timings.
So what is your memory running at and was PhysX disabled?
My Mem settings are in my sig(also in the everest widget on the screen shot)...8GB's was not easy to overclock on the SIIE but I have had it nice and stable for a while now. Can't see how that would affect Vantage.Quote:

Also interesting to note the GPU fans hardly spin up at all on these demos, heaven does a bit 3Dmark 06 is quite.
Probably have to wait from drivers to mature a bit to see better results, one thing is for sure I can run games at 2560x1600 a hell of a lot better than my 8800Gt's ever could.
I expected 3dmark to be higher than that. But again, true game performance is what matters at the end.

I finally ordered an SSD this last week and I should receive it mid next week. I decided on the OCZ Vertex LE 100GB. Got a pretty sweet deal on it through Amazon.
I've got a couple question for you Trigger. Did you encounter any hiccups when installing Win 7? Did you disable superfetch?
No issues at all installing Win7 in the Intel's I flashed them to the latest BIOS first. Setup the raid 0 in bios and ran the install right off the DVD. I did not have to disable superfetch.
Still loving them too, OS is so much faster... OS IO operations were killing your WIN 7 experience. SSD's save the day.
I'm happy to hear the SSD's are working out well. Are you using the default Windows 7 sata drivers or the nvidia ones?
Edit: Never mind. I forgot that you're using it in an array. Thanks for the info. I'll post my outcome once I get the SSD. Hopefully it'll have the latest bios installed as I've heard OCZ's flash utility doesn't play nice with nvidia controllers.
Got my Vertex LE a couple of days ago. Flashed it to the newest FW, which was a pain. I had to do it on my HTPC since it has an intel chipset (flash utility only seems to play nice when AHCI is enabled.)
I've got to install Vista first before installing my windows 7 upgrade...Microsoft upgrade policy sucks arse.

Btw, Have you guys been testing latest BIOS releases? Like 1203, 1301, 1401 to see if overclocking improved at all (or at least helped estbilizing?)?
I've been using 1301 for awhile now. I saw no difference in 1203 and 1301. Both perform well and OC exactly the same.
On my system, 1401 failed to load performance counters (event log: loadperf.) I haven't seen anyone else comment about it, though. I had no other issues with it other than that. 1401 is an ATI specific bug fix as I understand it.
Yep, but sometimes there is more than just the published changelog.
A lot of minor/internal changes are sometimes not published, making some releases more stable/better performers even though they dont mention it.
I'm still on 1202. No time to test a new bios right now and I'm not sure I have the patience to start trying to clock this machine any higher. We all know it cam be a major trial and error effort mostly on the error side.

I got my SSD up and running. I can't believe how fast this thing boots up. Haven't had time to do any benchmarks yet but I'll post some results when I can get around to it this weekend.

Not shabby at all, the new Sandforce controller is the real deal. If you ever decide to add a second drive and go RAID 0 for more space don't worry about trim or performance loss. I found the work around.
All you have to do is use PerfectDisk 10, run "consolidate free space" this moves everything in order on the drive.
Then run a little app called free space cleaner. This guy basically writes data to all of the free space filling every block until the drive is full then it completely wipes it. Take all of 5 mins to do. I do it about once a month just for the hell of it. I still haven't noticed any real peformance loss with regular use.
Here's a bench of my intel's in raid 0 to compare to your OCZ LE. I bet the LE's would kill in raid 0.
Good tip on the TRIM workaround. I had just done research on PerfectDisk but i didn't know about freespace cleaner. Do you have a good download site to get that from? The google searches are coming up with a bunch of spyware infested sites.
Definitely, striping these SSD's show massive improvement. I hated having to rebuild my array when things went awry (when I used to run striped drives long ago.) Seeing all the performance you get through these SSD's in RAID 0 makes me tempted to reconsider doing it again.
On a different note, here's my Heaven benchmark running my 2 oc'd 280's @ 1920 x 1200.
I got the freespace cleaner from a link OCZ forums. Tony posted a thread re trim work around for RAID. Can't find it just now, have a search on the OCZ forums you should be able to hit it.
PART 1 - THE ASUS MENACE
I recently bought myself an Asus S2E on ebay.
I read this thread before buying the board & decided to find out if the board really is as bad as all the negative posts in this thread (and the poor reviews on new-egg).
Received the board from ebay in mint condition, with all accessories included & flashed with the latest BIOS 1402.
I put my E8700 in with some G.SKILL DDR3-2400 (not on the QVL, designed for the P55 chipsets, with XMP profiles), the board recognised both the CPU & RAM and posted fine @ 9-9-9-24.
I went into the BIOS and tightened the RAM timings manually to 7-7-6-18;

Things were looking good - now for some overclocking!
PART 2 - ATTACK OF THE HOLES
I decided to do a quick FSB test with my E8700, capable of ~570 MHz on air cooling.
I started at 460 MHz but the board failed to post (the LCD poster kept saying 'CODE INIT'), so I increased the FSB past the apparent hole until it POST'd at 476 & went up from there, only to hit a wall at 520 MHz.
Increased PLL, VTT & vcore, still no go. Set P1 & P2 to auto and increased NB voltage, played with NB GTL, nada.
I was disappointed, anything above 520 MHz and the mobo wouldn't POST.
PART 3 - REVENGE OF THE RAM
I decided to move onto some RAM overclocking - this is where the problems really started.
I inserted 2 x 2GB of RAM in the blue slots & set the CPU FSB to default (1333 QDR) and incrementally increased the RAM (dividers allowing) up to a final 1700 MHz with loose timings and P1 & P2 on Auto.
Anything above 1700 MHz & I would either get no POST or errors in memtest86+ (v4.10).
Increasing the NB voltage above 1.46v caused the number of errors to increase into the tens of thousands, yet the NB temperature seemed to be ok, idling at ~60°C and increasing to ~63°C under load.
I tested each RAM stick in my friend's X58, no error's - it had to be the 790i chipset.
Again i was disappointed...
I set the FSB to 1600 QDR & linked the RAM, the board POST'd ok. Everest showed the chipset latency to be ~55ns, unfortunately P1 & P2 had no effect on chipset latency at this low FSB frequency.
I decided to increase the FSB in an attempt to find chipset straps & decrease the chipset latency but the board couldn't post above 1600 FSB!!! WTF!?!
I discovered the size of the FSB hole... no, more like a freaking black hole, from 1601 up to 1904 !!!
I was seriously starting to believe all the bad things I had heard about the S2E...
The next step was a BIOS flash, I thought that maybe 1402 sucked, really really sucked...
Used EZflash to flash 0101, the board POST'd ok but couldn't recognise the CPU model due to missing microcode - tested the FSB anyway, no change.
Tried several more BIOS - still no change!
I couldn't believe it - I had purchased the worst Asus S2E ever made.
PART 4 - A NEW HOPE (DON'T MESS WITH THE ORIGINAL, K GEORGE!?!)
I began scouring the internet for clues on how to solve the FSB hole issue & came accross someone with the same problem - he couldn't set the FSB higher than 1333 QDR.
This is the line that really caught my attention;

PART 5 - THE NORTHBRIDGE STRIKES BACK
The weird NB voltage issue was eating at me - how could increasing the voltage from 1.46v to 1.48v cause such a drastic increase in chipset errors? and why did 1700+ MHz on the RAM have the same effect?
I decided to take the cooling off and examine the board - maybe something was damaged in transit.

A piece of plastic tape sitting between the NB chip and the NB cooler!
What better way to cook your NB than to increase the voltage with ZERO contact to the heatpipe.
I wonder how many left the Asus factory like this???
Removed the tape, replaced the TIM & re-mounted the cooling - idle temp 53°C @ 1.46v - load temp 54°C @ 1.46v - much better!
PART 6 - RETURN OF THE OVERCLOCKING (ok, so I'm lame - you don't need to tell me)
Having dropped the NB temp by a whopping 10°C I decided to re-test the max RAM frequency again.
Result, 2x2GB DDR3-2074 9-11-9-24 2T;

I know the bandwidth/timings are crap but being that the board wouldn't even POST with the RAM above 1700 MHz in the first place, this is a big improvement - and the best part - no chipset errors!
Just for sh%ts & giggles I stuck another 2x2GB of the G.SKILL DDR3-2400 into the white slots to see if the NB can handle 8GB, it's currently running at DDR3-1824 without errors;

I can see how easily people would become frustrated and give up on this motherboard.
As for the plastic packaging tape on the NB, well, Asus QC failed, plain and simple.

I can get to 550 MHz FSB on 1402 (but also some earlier BIOS such 0402, 1301 & 1203) but I didn't test that many with my E8700 before I dropped my quad in.
My QX9650 goes to 476.25 (1905 QDR) on my 780i and I have equalled that on the 790i;

I dropped the multiplier to 6 and disabled the 2nd core which allowed me to push the FSB up to 487.5 MHz (1950 QDR).

Looks like I might need some Vcore, VTT, PLL and GTLVREF adjustments to make the 2nd core stable above 476.25 MHz.
[Edit] I was interested in comparing the 790i with the P45 for vcore requirements at high clock speed and as usual the Nvidia board requires more voltage.
Here's a ss of the E8700 @ 4.762 GHz, with the voltage set to 1.50v (LLC disabled), the P45 can do this with ~1.46v;

Chinobino, Trigger and I use an X-fi titanium in the top 1x slot. Works well. The latest driver solved the crackling with SLI enabled and the sound is great.
If you are switching from no RAID to RAID0 then you would first need to ensure that your current Windows installation already has the drivers installed for the RAID array, then you could attempt to image your current installation with Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost onto another drive, then create the RAID array and attempt to restore the image, no guarantee that this would work though.Quote:

So, any advice u might gave me to get it stable at 4.7, would be greatly aprecciated. VTT, PLL, Vcore, GTL, guess I have to do some fine tuning there. My concern is GTL´´s cause donno where to start there.

Hi Francko1979, sry I completely missed your post, here is a late reply...
4.7 GHz is most likely going take a fair bit more vcore.
As you can see in my SS, v1.504 vcore (LLC disabled) to be stable @ 4.762 GHz.
I have put up to 1.55v through my E8700 (LLC disabled) to run at 4.830 GHz (10.5 x 460) but the heat was unmanageable on air coooling.
I leave all GTLVREF's on Auto, I found that adjusting any of them made the PC fail to POST or it corrupted my OS install.
I used 'Auto' as a reference on my 780i to see what they were being set to as the FSB increased, I found that positive values helped, even on a 45nm CPU.
The problem with the S2E is that you can't see what 'Auto' is setting them to as there is no monitoring for the GTLVREF's :(.
My settings for 4.762 GHz (476.2 x 10);
vcore: 1.50625v (1.50000v was failing small FFT's on Prime, so I nudged it up)
LLC: Disabled <--- This board does some crazy things with LLC enabled and high vcore, so be careful if you leave it enabled
PLL: Auto (1.55v) <--- I have tried increasing this up to 1.74v but I still could not get over the 550 FSB wall
VTT: 1.4v <--- You may need less so start low and work your way up
NB: 1.44v (P1 and P2 enabled) <--- If I go above 1.46v I get errors in memtest from the chipset
RAM: 1.64v (overvolts to ~1.70v)
SB: Auto (1.5v)
The biggest problem is the increased heat from upping the vcore, being that you have water cooling you should hopefully be able to keep it under control :).
Also, you might want to consider using a lower FSB, setting the multiplier to 10.5 (448 x 10.5) and getting that stable first, then try to get 470 x 10 stable etc
That will take some stress off the NB and CPU.
Hey Guys need some ideas here. My OCZ gamerxtreme 850W power supply kicked the bucket last week. I did'nt want my system down for a few weeks waiting on the RMA so I bought the Corsair HX1000W modular PS figuring I will sell the RMA PS when it arrives.
My problem is the system freezes after resuming from sleep now that I have the new PS installed. WTF?? this doesn't make sense to me. I have tried so many things, BIOS re flash, new video drivers, disable X-fi sound card. Stock clocks no OC's. Increase PLL. Nothing works to solves this, it's driving me nuts because I need my puter to sleep and wake properly.
Shoot your ideas please. What would the power supply have to do with freezing on resume?? Thx for any help.
It's odd that a psu change would affect your system coming out of sleep, especially when it was working before. I never use sleep since my Vertex LE doesn't respond well to it.Quote:

Hey Trigger, have you checked your Event viewer logs to see what's causing the crash?
I had the same issue, 'nvoclk64.sys' (Nvidia System Tools) stopped my gf's 780i from waking up from sleep so I removed it.
The default Windows 7 SATA/RAID drivers where causing my S2E to wake up from sleep with Aero disabled so I updated to the latest chipset drivers (15.53WHQL) and the problem has been fixed.
I did look at the event viewer all I'm getting is the system was rebooted unexpectedly. I have to power down after a failed resume. It's not trapping the problem as far as I can see. I just upgraded to 15.53 that was no help.Quote:

The RAM is dual channel for 1156 boards.
This kit uses 1.65v right up to 2400 MHz, so 1800 MHz is easy (8-8-8-22 2T).

It depends more on the type of IC than anything.
I have PSC (Samsung?) IC's and they will do DDR3-1600 at 7-7-7-21 2T with 4GB (2 x 2GB sticks) but the NB can only handle DDR3-1800 at 8-8-8-22 2T with 8GB (4 x 2GB).

You might have reached your max bandwidth thats my only guess. I think the highest Striker I have seen got up to 14k, but 12k-low 13k is most common.
Did you try 41, 42, 43, 44 and 45?
Also, just for the heck of it try 39 and 38 to see if it helps at all.
I tried tRC all the way down to 16 and didn't notice much change in bandwidth (+50MB/s read).
I wonder if there is a better way to check tRC gains than using Everest's memory bandwidth test?

I think people in the ASUS II NSE forum have done so and didnt have problems.
But that was back in the 701 - 901 days. Current BIOS is 1402 I cant guarantee everything will be fine, even though it should be

Okay it's that time of year again... When I need to install a big program, extract a big archive or move some big files again, and I start getting the dreaded freezes again...
I say this because my S2E is behaving very well, good a nice stable overclock, stock volts on NB, SB and DDR with just a little bit extra on the CPU, everything remaining nice and cool... And then it comes to moving big files...
Now I know what you're thinking, high I/O, pump up the SB? Will I've tried adding volts to the SB, the NB, the memory modules (not so much, don't think I've ever tried going above 1.92, 1.94, they're rated at 1.9), but nothing seems to make a difference...
So here I am again... Help me :( Even just a point in the right direction could be a godsend.
(Btw: Saw 1402 was out, figured it couldn't hurt, set BIOS to default before the flash and forget to re-enable the overclock straight away. Freeze on big file operations (extracting an 8GB rar in this case but I know this is the same issue) still happening. Other than that it passes overnight memtest, prime and intel burn >.> )
What windows are you using?
I havent had problems with files up to 2gbs big. I havent tried bigger files in a really long time tho. I would double check your RAM. That used to be my biggest problem back in the day when it came to corrupted files.
Also, you might want to reflash your BIOS with awdflash since I heard ezflash leaves corruption. Idk if this is a rumor or not, but doesnt hurt to try.

I used to have 1301 until last week and that had been flashed using awdflash, as had the one I was using before (this is 2 years ago now, not sure which one it was :P ) but the same problem always occurred.
You're probably right on the RAM front but I have no clue which setting is triggering these errors. I'll go and grab another copy of memtest and run that again but last I remember it was passing it fine.
This really is an irritating issue though, coz I tend to go a couple of months without dealing with big files and completely forget about it... Then try to extract a big archive, or install a big game, or backup a bunch of data... and the freezes start again :P
I've actually resorted to network mounting the archive on my EEE running Ubuntu to see if it'll work better if I extract it using that one... ridiculous having quad 3.8GHz cores idling while the poor atom is chugging away with unrar and samba :P
(For what it's worth, doing it over the network doesn't "fix" the issue, still crashed the first time, but on attempt #2 I've so far made it to 30% but going to have to wait an hour or so to see if it completes)
Edit: For what it's worth I think I've managed to narrow it down to the jMicron SATA controller.
I'm going to be heading off for the holidays so I wanted to move stuff over to the external and the constant crashes was making that next to impossible so at every reboot I would change from of the BIOS settings. Eventually I just disabled the jMicron controller and that didn't help, but when I re-enabled it and set it to IDE rather than AHCI it seems to have helped as it's been copying for 2h+ now and it's still going strong...
Now, am I going to have to run it in AHCI most of the time and switch to IDE whenever I need to do big transfers or can this somehow be fixed?
