Last week CPU I got in was L42... I'm thinking either later L42 batches or L43 might be out now guess I'll see soon....

guys you are all my friends here and I value your opinions. what do you guys think of sandy bridge? Is it fun? From what Ive seen I see more people looking at batch numbers and hitting walls because they dont come alive in the cold like their intel predecessors. it kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. is the memcontroller way better than clarksdale? for example I have a i5 655k that does 5.8ghz on ln2 but mem clocks are around 2000 at 6-9-6. so now I go and buy a 2500k and and 159.00 board and hit 5.1 ghz if im lucky with a container on the cpu and ice cubes and water in the pot at 10c and then I have it maxed out and ive done every bench I could with it and it goes into my 24 /7 gaming rig which I already have a 1366 x3540 and sabertooth x58 at 4.3ghz. it seems like a very short lived thrill just because its new hardware and because there is no jump in clocks with cold then its like okay great I have this setup that does 5ghz on air and I can run ddr3 at 2100 at 7-9-7- timings but is it even going to matter? its a 24/7 rig at the end of the day and where is the fun in that?

Got some more fun stuff on the way... :wasntme:
Getting LN2 this week but will need a lot more than 50L this time methinks....
trans am - the memory controller is WAY better than in Clarkdale. You may hit the same memory clocks but Sandy Bridge will get three times less latency and 80% better bandwidth at the same clocks.

Welcome Ms. OCQueen :welcome:
Nice start!
hello lady! :hrhr:
:welcome:
New 2600K just arrived.
L045A998
Can't help but wonder what happened to batch L043 and 44? :p:
We'll see!
zeneffect and name gt are tearing up the charts on friday night! :toast:
Im just having fun watching the scores pour in!
im curious to see you dudes run some 2001 while the iron is still hot.
@XS를 OCQueen에 오신 것을 환영합니다! 모두는 곧 불고기에 나가서 수 있습니다! :toast:
name gt, what is your relationship with ocqueen? why hasnt she posted yet on xs? are you putting us on and just logged in and created a new xs id with a beautiful woman holding a card or is she real?
lets see some video of the queen in action. she seems rad.
Msimax picked up a 2600K chip.
L042B208 = 5.3, DI full pot testing revealed no cold issues. Blck testing = about 106 still 5.3 limit. Multi limit 53X.
Guess that batch can swing one of 2 ways with the trends i see, either it goes down to 5.1 or up to 5.5.......
Microcenter.
I wanna see some results on the bot nonetheless! :p:
While we're at it, zeneffect where are you? I want to see some more of your results as well! :stick:
Nice work Steve, still getting some points out of the 5870!
So her nickname is bomnoon?
I'll get her account activated as soon as possible!

Recently in South Korea to compete in 2500k Overclocking:toast:
Air cooling of the good results of her team was No. 1.:D
Got you better pictures of that chicks :D
I have tried two so far, my best was also a L042B208 @ 5.3 ht off on UD5, also from microcenter. :)
I wonder if I could get higher on the P8P67 with higher bclock.
Trying now but for some reason with the latest bios I am locked at 3.4, odd :(
Could also be user error, haven't tweaked on asus in a long while and this new bios is so different from gigabyte.
^^show some respect. if you want pics of chicks go browse some :banana::banana::banana:o sites. If you want to welcome a new xs member do it in a way that shows some dignity and respect. :nono:
if name gt and safe disk are her pals then I would probably think twice before posting comments like that one. what the hell?
steve your pc mark scores are insane btw. chew knows the asus board inside and out. he can help. I am watching name gt and pccriminal on the biostar and its just amazing what is possible on that thing. Chew said msimax from new york had no cold issues on dice but I dont think cold is the issue on sandy bridge. the issue is the gains in clocks from sorta cold to xtreme cold is pathetic.
Nice going guys!

Very good, yes I tried that and many other things, reset via jumper, pull battery-reset, different ps, different vga, single stick of mem.
Still can't come off of 34 multi - it might still be user error but I am beginning to wonder.
So a few screen shots to show what i am seeing.
As an easy example, i just set system performance to "performance in the EZ mode - (this same probelm happens when I set everything manually also, i am using ez mode just for this example).
See screen shot 1, then after reboot, i go into the bios and looke at Ai Tweaker.
In screen shot 2 - windows should set cpu speed to 4429.
Finally look at XPx32 screen shot - screenshot 3.
TurboV says I should be at 43x but clearly under linx load i remain at 34x
Anyone have any idea what is going on?

Steve, did you have TurboV installed in windows before you started overclocking? Reason I ask is because I had a similar issue after installing TurboV.
Mr MTP - I'm not using turboV to overclock just to display what speed the machine booted at.
I was overclocking in the bios only.
After the fact - I did try to raise the mutli in turboV, no luck there either - I can raise the multi in TurboV but no change in the displayed cpu speed in cpuz or realtrmp.
stevero had to 1 up me in am3 last night
anyways, updated result
http://www.hwbot.org/community/submi...0_413090_marks
Mr. ZenEffect - nice run! great chip you got there!
Also - everyone - I figured out the P8P67 problem I was having.
Apperantly there is a compatibility problem between the Asus P8P67 and the MTRON Mobi 3000 drive.
The Mobi SSD is IDE only so you need to change that in the bios to even boot but then when it does boot you only get the 34x multi, no higher.
I was able to confirm this by switching back and forth between the Mobi and a Crucial C300 - C300 let me get to 52x101.1=5258 under W7x64 with light 2d, pi and wprime32. This was the L040B705 chip.
I will now try my L042B208 chip in the Asus. On the UD5 I had this chip to 5315 for the easy 2D and pcm05. :)
I take back what I said, I'm still broken. :(
When I put my other chip in the machine - it would post but not boot, out of about 20 tries at all different settings I got one windows boot at 5g.
Even tried to install a new os at default settings but the machine would just blue screen at the end of loading windows from the usb.
I will take it back to microcenter this week.

SteveRo is already pushing his new GTX 580 to the limit, while chew* has found a nice Phenom II 955. He managed to hit 7200MHz+ on the C4E!
Third overclocker to enter the Phenom II 7.2GHz club as well!
G.Foyle is overclocking a GTX 465, taking home the gold cup in the 01 category!
zeneffect and Linuxfan, nice scores as well in Heaven and 3D Mark Vantage! :)
holy crap look at all those points! :slobber:
Mr. Steve thinks he can just pass me... :hehe:
Well I gotta get up and do something about this.
Lately I've been dropping like a fly in the rankings now and Steve is ahead of me in globals! :shakes:
Nice work you guys passing 450 points and nearing 500... :toast:
Heh I got a few buns in the oven myself.
No chip that does more than 5 gig but lets see how much effec I can wring out of it ;)
Yes, my time in the light will be brief - this I know well! :yepp:
Much thanks to all my mentors in this forum, my education continues. :)
guys I tried the FEB contest (stage 2) JUST FOR FUN and I got 18k points on modest clocks and vga.
this is 1 core enabled single vga. when submitting on hwbot I get a warning to use a driver that does not allow physx. can i disable it in nvidia panel or is this a special thing?
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...ith/182802.jpg
Chew I know buddy. My question is how do I disable it so can get a legit submission?
no that not it both of you. I tried all that. the 1st run I submitted was phys cpu checked. then I ran it with gpu checked. final fix was going to control panel and removing nvidia physx driver and rebooting. lets lets see what happens.
okay here we go. man what a difference physx makes. Massman. please add these instructions to any future benches that call for phyx being disabled. its goes like this...
assuming you are on nvidia and installed the driver by clicking a button at defaults you have physx installed.
the workaround is unistalling that nvidia driver suite and rebooting
reinstall using advanced settings and uncheck the box that enables physx driver.
reboot
then go into nvidia panel /physx settings and check cpu box.
thats it. and your score that you thought you had it made at 18k is actually this:
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...lsmith/11k.jpg
18k to 11k its amazing what phyx can do for a run but whats even more amazing is that i just learned this today.
a seven thousand point increase from something called physx. it makes you wonder on so many levels.
http://hwbot.org/competition/hoc_feb11?tab=stage%202
I still dont understand the difference betwee HT being a feature and allowed and Phyx being software and is not allowed, but rules are rules.
It's really simple: HT works 100% in hardware and is the feature the same as multicore, 64-bit or SSE are features. HT works in every OS and for every software, regardless if it has been written with HT in mind (i.e. wprime or 3dm06). PhysX is 100% software (could be recompiled for ATI hardware if Nvidia allowed), is not vendor-agnostic, requires additional vendor locked libraries (PhysX runtime) and, most importantly, requires the software to be coded with PhysX in mind.
HT is a way of executing twice as many threads without having twice as many transistors. Bulldozer will have a different way of doing the same: add threads without adding transistors. It's the same for SSE, AVX, 64-bit extensions: they all add throughput without adding transistors.
Hwbot keeps going down when I want to submit results.... :(
Its a conspiracy! :ROTF:
Well in overall globals I am past Steve now..... :D
Still got a long way to go, he's been working hard and getting good results.
Tested one of my 580s today on LN2 and it was pretty horrible, as well as the 980x... More testing to come.
Guys I'm confused by this submission.
http://hwbot.org/community/submissio...80_35857_marks
Compare CPU score to this:
http://hwbot.org/community/submissio...80_32974_marks
Is there some trick to this?
If theres a tweak for that id like to know as well, thats quite a bit more that what ive been able to get at 5.2 which is only a little over 35K.
Looks like PhysX was not really disabled. Sometimes you can disable physx in nv control panel and it will show disabled in GPU-Z, but still work in Vantage. You can also (deliberately) disable physx after running vantage but before running GPU-Z.
Agree, doesn't look right unless there is a trick or tweak we do not know about.
I chatted with some people about it already. Its bugged CPU test 1.......cpu test 2 would be much higher if physx was on.
ehmm
im taking part on the Hwbot.org contest UCBench 2011
Top spot in 8x rank i know big boys havent played that yet but we dont loose anything to have 10 points for us :D
All right Mr. Tiltevaros! Excellent work!
here is something from me from 3DmarkVantage with dual E5520 @ 3544Mhz
and yes his Cpu score are bugged
http://3dmark.com/3dmv/2852342
Congrats to SteveRo for finding a 5.5+ 2600K today!
I'm sure that you can get a nice '05 and '06 score as well as bump your other GTX 480 and 5870 runs up now!
Go go go! :D
Got a few 2600Ks coming in, maybe one will be decent...
Does microcenter still carry these chips and the boards?
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...5&postcount=89
Dumo jsut scored a gem at microcenter this weekend in NY.
I got my best PC vantage score tonight. I think I need to insulate the 1366 setup finally and get some ln2 this week. I havent really benched in 2 months.
steve nice going man. Im watching your submissions on the bot tonight and freaking out. Nice Tilt. I need to try that bench out.
Thanks guys, yes both of my last 2 SB (53x, 55x) I got at microcenter Fairfax, VA.
I believe they are still selling the chips not sure about the boards though.
I wouldn't mind having another GB SB board as backup for my UD5 - might be hard to come by at the moment.
Wow, you guys are on fire!
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/6...uary5th201.jpg
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/6...uary8th201.jpg
That's a great reason for my 2000th post as well!
Wow - 4 MORE 2600ks! Including this 4 how many is that for you now?
I've sampled 3 so far (51x, 53x, 55x) - might do more - not sure yet.
Remember when 920s went from C0 to D0 stepping - could that happen to SB?
Msimax found a 5.6 gig chip.
Guess I can use it for 3d ;)
If you happen to get an extra good one out of that group that you dont need id be willing to take it off your hands. ;) I got a second one yesterday and its no better than what I have, although it would do about 106.8 blck.
Steve is still getting faster runs now and is jumping in the rankings! He's nearing 600 points global total and top 50. :D
Amazing what a 5.5 SB can do.
Preety much steve but you will find quickly its a rat race everytime new hardware comes out.
Soon as a new GPU comes out bye bye 3d globals, same for cpu.
Only diff now is ln2 benchers have no edge as far as CPU/2D goes.
Global points are hard to keep unless you can throw some money around.
Hardware points are much easier to keep, don't help my ranking but helps team and is much cheaper for me.
Ok - well then - I guess I'm living thru my 1st cycle.
I remain surprised and a little taken aback by how much luck plays into it all.
^ I thought you had a Gigabyte board?
learning curve for you my friend.
don't forget if installing xp (and vista?) you need to set the HDD controller to ide (it defaults to sata) otherwise not even the CD based windows will start up.
I returned my P8P67 cause i thought it was broke but it was probably just this - now I have no backup board, I think i will need to remindy this.
OK so I was able to run a spi32 at 6:02 but then the machine just rebooted and would not post.
After about 2 hours of trying different things I believe my 55x cpu died. :(
I think I was able to confirm this by putting in the 53x cpu - worked fine, put in the 55x no go, put in the 53 work fine, ...
I was running high v's for benching - cpuv 1.6 to 1.66, agent v - 1.064 to 1.104 with vtt (for memory) at 1.2 and mem voltage at 1.88v under cold water - realtemp was reporting 20's.
Hopefully, microcenter will exchange - too bad - it was a good chip! :(
Anyone have any other ideas before I return it?
I got 2 chips in today both are batch L045A912 numbers 2239 and 0002. The 0002 is nothing special doing a little over 51 but the 2239 is a gem, it does up to 53 with internal pll overvoltage off and so far gets into windows at 56 with it on. It tried for 57 but it froze during windows loading, it was the first chip I tested so I havent spent alot of time with it yet.
If it gets into OS but won't bench at that speed, you need more cold. My chip will boot and load os at x54, but needs to be slightly subzero to be 100% stable at that speed.
steve i gotta congratulate you man. I was just looking on the bot and looked at our rankings and saw you are the no1 on hwbot xs member. that blew my mind man considering you really started submitting in 2010. everyone if you havent yet give uncle steve a pat on the back. If there was an xs award for xs overclocker of the the year you would have it hands down and we all would agree you earned it.
you came in here out of nowhere and within a year you are number 1 xs mvp. Its frickin mindblowing man! :toast:

congrats stevero!!!
thats a lot of benching
honda. he's married too. that even freaks me out more. he can come in here keep us freaked out and his wife is totally cool with it.
Steve tell Mrs Ro all of us at xs appreciate her patience in regards to your benching. Thats almost a new hwbot category. married or single. if you are married and benching heavy duty it makes things 10 times harder because you are juggling the wife and trying to keep her happy and then you are trying to keep your team happy and yourself happy with your own expectations. you guys know what im talking about. ;)
Im using cold water right now but I do have a pot if it needs it. I just got the chip back in and its definitely going to need some work to stabilize 56. For the ss below I had 1.6 set in bios llc1, it did a spi 1m run but ended up freezing up just be for I could save it. Later tonight when it gets colder I may play with it some.

5.5 run no tweaks

EDIT
Managed to get 57 to boot up. :D
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1650991
Apparently I've had pretty bad luck with my random 2600K chips so far.
Here's the 7 I've tested.
2x 5.0ghz
2x 5.1ghz
2x ~5.2ghz
1x 5.3x ghz
Testing the 5.3x on SS tomorrow hopefully I can get it stable for a few little runs though I see they will not be worth much...
Maybe 32M can be fun.
All newegg chips Linux?
Thanks guys, yes lots of luck (good chips), a lot of time, good training from my teammates and an understanding wife. :)
Mr. Linux - I can't believe you can only get a 53x after so many chips, thats hard ... :shakes:
Do you think you might go higher with a giga board?
Did you read up - get any help from the P8P67 gurus?
Looks like msimax will be climbing the charts overnight also, expect a strong 32m pi run been working at it for a few days now.
He's on his way up tonight. We got some benching planned, I got a 30L and he got a 5600 chip.
Computer show is tommorow to in my area so we are going to go hit that up batch hunting and we will see if there are any goodies in the used junk as far as vga's go.
Wife's buying me a late B day present, lets see if i can join the masses of sub par 2600K chips.......
Hey Kal-EL!
First three were newegg(5.1, 5.2, and 5.0s) then these last four are from eBay.
P8P67 seems to be running smooth, have most of those settings or extreme like LLC seems to be ok.
Thing that I'm kinda messed up about is the turbo multi.. seems like because I set the multi as a turbo multi, it only actually gets to that multi during boot, so yeah it'll post with high multis without really being able to run them. Weird.
Splave,
That really gave me some hope. I did try quite a few settings on air but maybe my air was too warm(it was showing 48oC+ in BIOS) and vcore wasn't high enough....
The last chip I tried L046Bxxx that did 5.1 did try to boot at 5.5 but would lock at the end of the starting windows page and the mouse looses signal...
Dunno. We'll see if I can get anything more out of the 5.3 chip this morning.
Still wondering if its the turbo tricking me to thinking its trying to boot at 56x for example when its really just turning on the 56x when it locks...
Are you on an Asus board?
Thanks guys!
@Chew: You don't need any good luck getting good scores with a 5.6 I'm sure so I will not tell ya good luck.
Just please don't pass me too far too fast so I can never catch up to you in global rankings.
Good luck and have a nice benching session with MSIMax. :)
I'm sorry to heat about your loss! :(
That CPU did a great job during its' short life!
I still remember that I asked him to post some of his PCMark Vantage results to hwbot some time last year, and now he's #1 of the team!
Well done Steve!
That's a great chip, treat her well and let's see some more scores!
Have fun guys, and good luck! :)
Don't forget to run MaxxMem... ;)
Yah this isn't for me we are focussing on him, my time will come eventually it always does, i will have all the research done ready and waiting till then ;)
Yep maxx mem is on list Dan, top 10 should be cake if i was able to pull off top 12 with a measly 5 gig chip ;)
Linux,
Tbh i'm done with the global rat race, points for team are points for team, global isn't worth any more than hardware points and unless you have deep pockets you will always lose them.
I talked with massman about this other day, basically short version of the story.
I walk down the street tell some stranger i'm top 10 in the world at hwbot and his response would be who gives a :banana::banana::banana:.
I had the second loudest car in SPL comps in my class in the entire United states, competed at USAC nationals. Guess what, no one gives a :banana::banana::banana:.
Other than a personal achievement it ends there, no one in the "real world" cares.
My outlook on things now is this, if you get lucky and buy one or 2 chips get a nice one and get effecienct scores you are a winner, if it takes you 20 chips to do this you are a loser not in the sense that you can't hit numbers but in the sense that your broke and the manufacturer got rich. The only real winner there is intel ;)
I am still giving money to intel thats for sure.
I just got back from mc - 4 more.
They gave me 4 but I'm not sure they would have if I had not been rather ... assertive.
I knew I could count on you! ;)
Of course you're right, but isn't this true for every hobby there is?Quote:

Everything I have done so far, be it some kind of sport, music, or model trains ( yeah... :D ) cost me a lot of money, but anyone who is not interested in those things doesn't care a lot if you won an important match, or if you managed to play a difficult piece.
However, this is unimportant if it makes you feel good about your personal achievement.
That's my outlook on things, and I believe everyone should feel the same about his hobby, enjoy it, and try to get the best out of his hardware.
:)
Seems like you found a rather nice chip....
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/729...uary13th20.jpg
Found a rather nice one?
Yep, hard to believe my luck.
Something bad will probably happen to me tomorrow.
My general belief is these things have a way of averaging out!
Meanwhile, I want to try to keep this chip healthy until I can run all the 580 3D through it.
The chip might die before it can get to 3D like the other since you have all this good luck..
Its my turn for the good luck so send it to me and I'll do 3D!
I'm sure we're going to see some amazing 3D scores now!:up::up:
Edit: just saw your almost 5.7G pifast run! Congrats on a really nice chip!
