the coverter is fine if you have a good psu and want it to turn on when your computer turns on or are limited to space. I never shut my comp off though and rebooting doesn't turn the pump off. Having ac to dc is a good idea though to not strain the psu if your is dinky. MJgent runs his with a converter fine and mine's ok too. It is possible that you could strain the psu and kill it. So I guess when it comes down to it, it's up to you to decide which way you want to go.
Edit : I just realized my comment might be misleading, to clarify, I am NOT using that converter that I linked to. I am using this converter from powerstream.com

They actually may run at lower voltage, the issue will be at what voltage will they start up at? Example; you start the pump at 18v then get it down to say 12v (can't go this low on my Meanwell), you turn the pump off at 12v. Will the pump restart with 12v? That is the question. To the first question the answer is simply no. The RD-30 will outperform (head + flow) the 20 at all comparable voltages. Heat dump will obviously be more with the 30 at all comparable voltages, how much I do not know.Quote:

The real question is which converter or MeanWell PSU to use. I just ordered a RD-20 from a local distributor and I'm definintely not getting it as cheap as fareastgq is through his batch order. I think I'm going with the MeanWell S-145-24 and undervolt to about 19-21V. I also have the same Zippy 700W that fareastgq has but it's a $250 PSU that I'd much rather protect than a sub-$50 Meanwell. Plus, I'm running X1900's in crossfire and I could probably dedicate a PSU just to those monster hogs alone.
I honestly think that the RD-20 is overkill for just about all of us so no matter which pump you choose you're still getting a monster.

Be cautious when finding an online retailer. I've seen the S-145-24 being sold as low as $34 all the way up to $88. I've seen the S-150 from $40 all the way up to $136!
I believe the only difference between the S-145 and the S-150 is the 5W increase. The S-145-24 is 6.0A while the S-150-24 is 6.5A.
trcelectronics seems to have overall good prices and a decent looking website. I'm thinking I will buy from their tonight.
are you sure that startup for the pump on a daily basis would be safe for the S-150-24 to handle with only a 6.5a constant output? (i don't let my machine run 24/7)
i might just get the S-240-24 to be safe in the end... its not like theres space issues when you have a MM U2-UFO ;)
Yeah, the S-150-24 only 6.5A current may not be enough for the 8A needed for startup. I just found the S-210-24 which is about $65 compared to the $95 of the S-240-24. The S-210-24 supplies 8.8A of current.
I know the manual says to not use the pump for frequent on/off but I just don't like the idea of having the pump constantly pumping tons of gallons while I don't even need it. With the extreme power these pumps have, you just never know when something might start leaking and by the time you notice it your place is flooded.
I think I'm going to take my chances with turning the pump on and off when I need it. It's not a 24/7 always-on rig but maybe is on for 2-3 hours per day.
