On the fluid, most use water but manufacture the tubes in a low pressure atmosphre, so the inside of the tube is at a much lower pressure and the water boils at 100F instead of 212F. Makes for a very cheap solution.
The water molecules in the pipe can reach supersonic speeds moving from liquid to steam and back.
But given the stock Opteron heatpipe cooler is a 4pipe, I think 2 pipes for a much hotter core (GPU) warrents 4 pipes.
On my solution, I know its working well, the flow out of the fan (I have it rigged to suck air through the sink like the stock fan) feels like a blowtorch its so hot. So the stock sink is very efficient at etting the heat from the core, just needs a better flow of air than the stock buzzsaw fan provides.
the stock X1900 heatsink IS also a heatpipe... when you disassemble it, you find 2 pipes built into it.
Well I finally gave up on waiting for my cooler, so I picked up the Tide Water from Fry's today. For $100 bucks I get my silence back. It's completely silent and a run through 3d2k5 gets me 61c. Previously I had 83c with stock fan @ 50% and it was highly annoying.
Not sure if I'll keep it tho...since I'm highly excited about pursuing other H2O stuffs now. :p
Most modern heatpipes have wicking in them and so are not affected by gravity. I think most are using hydrocarbon chain refrigerants.
I've got some squirrel cage blowers here which I could slap onto it. But with such poor performance, its probably not worth the money.
the bad thing about using the stock sink with an 80mm fan like uwackme did is that you are stuck using those stock thermal pads as well...which are teh suck!! i have no idea why ati chose to use such garbage...
strap the stock amd hsf on there, its way better than stock and will allow you to use ramsinks as well.
I don't have access to the newer AMD coolers so I think I am just going to get the Accelero X2 this week. The main dilema now is whether I should use AS5 or Ceramique. I am usually a ceramique guy, especially when it comes to video cards but with the X1900 running as hot as it does im desperate for every last temperature drop even if very minor. If one of the pastes will do better than the other I will use that.
Never seen a definitive difference. There's probably more variance in batch to batch of either product than between the two. I use both.

I think they use pads cuz it's easier to get contact with the core if you don't have to machine the thing to have contact with RAM too. The pads fix up tolerance concerns. My Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer for my X850 uses them too. The metal plate in contact with the RAM still gets plenty warm, so it's obviously transfering heat a bit.
I was wondering if we could eliminate the pads and just use a glob of ceramique instead.
nope...it'll require too much for contact and then it'll jes overflow over the edges when heated up...gap is just too big

Mine came in today. The only complaint I have is the location of the heatpips; they block off two of my ram chips so I cant put sinks on them. The cpu core temp dropped considerably though; from 65c full load to 47c.
