I remember in the original Evap Cooler discussions long time ago, that there was some concern over Legionaire's Disease.
Also, keep in mind that having to continually fill up the evap cooler due to the H2O evaporating only leads to all the nastiness from public water systems becoming concentrated in your coolers.... something to think about. Have fun!
I've still run tap water and the worst I ever had was a layer of calcium which formed after about 5 months. So I went outside and sprayed the tube out with the hose at high pressure... And what is this Legionaire's Disease?

These symptoms usually begin 2 to 14 days after being exposed to the bacteria.
A milder infection caused by the same type of Legionella bacteria is called Pontiac Fever. The symptoms of Pontiac Fever usually last for 2 to 5 days and may also include fever, headaches, and muscle aches; however, there is no pneumonia. Symptoms go away on their own without treatment and without causing further problems.
Pontiac Fever and Legionnaires’ disease may also be called “Legionellosis” (LEE-juh-nuh-low-sis) separately or together.
How serious is it? What is the treatment?
Legionnaires' disease can be very serious and can cause death in up to 5% to 30% of cases. Most cases can be treated successfully with antibiotics [drugs that kill bacteria in the body], and healthy people usually recover from infection.
How can Legionnaires' be prevented?
The likelihood of Legionella infection can be best reduced by good engineering practices in the operation and maintenance of air and water handling systems.
Cooling towers and evaporative condensers should be inspected and thoroughly cleaned at least once a year.
Corroded parts, such as drift eliminators, should be replaced. Algae and accumulated scale should be removed.
Cooling water should be treated constantly. Ideally, an automatic water treatment system should be used that continuously controls the quality of the circulating water.
Fresh air intakes should not be built close to cooling towers since contaminated water particles may enter the ventilation system.

I've built a few years ago, but I'm rebuilding a basic one and a few wierd new ideas aswell.
also, keep in mind the hardness/softness of your local water; I know that my local water is hard enough to calcify pretty much anything in a matter of a few months, and those are items NOT being used as much as a computer (ie, showerhead)
Ah yes. In your case bloody distilled or no-bonging may be your only choice. :(

I don't know :banana::banana::banana::banana: about bong coolers but I know a hell of a lot about regular watercooling...
So please tell me why an air cooled bong can get the water under ambient?

Evaporation of the mean temperature. Water molecules are all different temps, temperature is an average. When the waters falling in droplets the hotter higher energy molecules can escape off. Reducing the average temperature. And it can get under ambient because there are colder than ambient molecules in every glass of water.
And I also know a hell of a lot about water cooling. I'd say a wider bong is good, but taller has more effect. Its something I will test. I think an average is best.
wow i didnt know bongs hit sub-ambient. as far as width, theres probably a reasonable width because of limitations in the spread of the water with the showerhead.
Bongs don't have to be that tall. They can be from 12' to less then 12" I have even read about, if I remember correctly, a 6" bong cooler. They used a small spiral of copper pipe instead of a shower head and plastic brillo's for the surface area. It cooled quite well.Quote:

I remember that as well, but still doesnt handle the load like a 4' or 6'+ bong of course. That form of surface area thru solid cooling is quite good, but requires a bit more $ to setup.
Evaporation takes energy. The energy that you are using comes from the heat in the water. If the water is already at ambiant and you continue with the evaporation process then the heat that is taken from the water will drop it below the air temp. Evaporation does not need warm water to work.Quote:
