As i'm sure you've seen, Sampsa got 705mhz by just raising his XL's gpu voltage to XT levels (1.05v-->1.31v) and using the XT cooler,that seems to be of much better quality, rather than the XL one. He also achieved 705(1410) on his mem keeping the voltage stock , without even changing the voltage to XT levels. I don't know if there is still contraversy about if Sampsa's card was "special" (hand-picked) or not, but Fugger reported (iirc) 1400-1500 being very possible on his XL as well...I don't recall if he has mentioned his cooling he was using though. Hopefully it was stock. :devil:

Can't wait to see more people with XL's using aftermarket air/water on their cards as soon as we have a fully-working overclocking utility and voltage adjustment software (or even hard-mods for that matter.) They may truely be worth their equal price to a GTX after all things are considered.

I still don't get why the XL's, and even XT's to an extent, were held back so much though. It seems like the XT could do more easily with just a little more stock volts...and why the XL's have such a crappy hsf and outrageously low volts is just beyond my comprehension, especially when they keep being proven to be capable of so much more so easily.

Perhaps they wanted them to be defined at these spots so when R580 products come out they can raise the stock voltage/freq so they will be positioned both above R520 for the top-end refresh, and between the XL/XT for the "XL-like" R580 product? Even if that's so...I still don't get it. When playing catch-up you'd think they'd come in with guns blazing to make up time and ground.

I totally agree with you turtle. I find the clock difference of 125mhz quite xtreme between the XL and XT cards especially when it doesn't take much to get the XL much higher. I remember when the difference between models was 20-40mhz on the card and that was a big deal.

Either way, as long as the card is faster than my current X800XL I will be happy.

I don't know how to describe how having a x800xl makes me feel. It's like, I know it was a good deal at the time (bought it from a reviewer on [H] right after they came out and 6800gt's on pci-e were ~$150 more)...but it really doesn't satisfy the overclocking urges...even strapping an A64 hsf/80mm to it only net me 10mhz...I prolly should've bought a 6800gt but the money and 51/49 ATi fanboyness won me over...every card i've had since my first build (when I knew nothing) has been ATi, so it's hard to break the mold.

It's nice to see a mid/high-end card like the 18XL overclock (even with mods) to the performance of the high-end parts again. I love seeing real value products for the enthusiast like this.

Now if AMD would make a 3400+/3600+ x2 ( :rolleyes: ) i'd grab one of these and 2gb's of ballstix, pair it with a raid setup of T7k250 250gb'ers and be happy for a little while. Waiting for value high-end parts to be around at the same time is a pain...lol. Oh well, at least ATi might have pulled their weight this time, unlike my upgrade to the x800xl. I'll def pick one of these or the 580 gen up sooner or later...Unless nvidia pulls out a rabbit.

man I think you are me in a differnet body. Setups are similar as well as thought patterns. I redid the thermal paste and put on an ATI silencer 5 rev. 2 and can barely do 421/553 on the card which just plain sucks. Clock for clock the XL is faster than an XTPE (X800 wise) but with the other cards clocking so much faster I am left behind. I plan on getting an XL as soon as they become available though in Canada the only cards soon to be available are the Sapphire's. Anyhow no more losing track of this thread, feel free to PM me anytime if you wish to chat turtle.

turtle, if you cant be happy with a X800XL, you're unlikely to be happy with a X1800XL. That "buying-rush" wears off really quickly.

to see good gains with x800xl, you need voltmods. Voltmods and water, at the very least. At that point it becomes a pretty darn good card.

i also believe those were the crappiest drivers ever, every time we booted windows said it ofund new hardware and needed to install it and it was already installed. I'm still not sure if the clocks were really high, its like they weren't applied even thought by software (atis ccc) it showed higher clocks

Also, heat limited looking at what has been achieved here, so water or better air cooling is required to go faster than 625*1400 I would guess.

60c is COLD for a graphics card nowadays. Certainly is for 6xxx series, and X8xx , and 7800 series.

Finally able to OC this card thanks to Zardon from DriverHeaven. This is still on the stock cooler. 1.4ns memory running fine over it's 700Mhz rating. I'll have the pelt modded tomorrow or the next day for some 700+ core action.

oh damn that is nice. Was the card 100% stable and artifact free or were these just quick runs and extensive testing wasn't performed? Any idea what temps were at full load with the card set to that?

I can't wait till Arctic Silencer comes out for this new card. That with some new thermal paste should surely yield some great results.
