Nice all you guys!
I will be trying this on my EVGA 6800gt AGP with an 80 to 120 shroud and mount an 120mm fan on it ...
With the stock heatsink I could have my card running 24/7 at 420/1150
I'll tell you how it performs ... :p
A 120 will have a huge dead spot in the middle, which I why I think the AMD stock 70mm fan works so well. I had an 80 mm stealth on it and my temps are a little better with the AMD fan, keep this in mind. You dont need 300 cfm of air on the GPU. I need to pickup a fan mate for mine and I may short the sensor on the AMD fan, that way I can control the RPMs, I like my cases quiet and right not when the GPU gets hot the AMD fan kicks up and thats the loudest thing in my case.Quote:

it'll have a deadspot even with a shroud??

nice simple modding everyone =]
Are you guys wrapping the zip tie under the heatsink and over the fan then or ??
I was thinking of ordering a fan from new egg today to do this, what would be the best one in your guys' opinion?
Just screw the fan into the heatsink :)
Any fan will do (not bigger than 80mm), all depends on how much noise u can handle ;)
I just did this mod using 92mm fan i used a tie strip to hold it onto the card no problems. dropped my idle temps from 50c to 40c load from like 69c to like 59c. I can overclock to 510/1370 without it artifacting in 3dmark05 but any higher it starts to chop up. I have a bfg tech 7800 gtx is there any bios or some crap to download that might let me overclock higher? it seems like its not getting enough power to the core so it starts to artifact. When i have it overclocked to like 520 it artifacts even @ 55c in 3dmark05 wtf lol.
do not screw the fan into the heatsink this will bend the fins and make cooling not as efficent.
Since when? :rolleyes:Quote:

umm because the fin will not be totally straight there's a reason for them being straight otherwise if it didnt matter they'd be all curved and fubared looking btw. Why in the hell would you want to have screw scratch marks indentations on the heatsink aswell its just plain retarded the tie strip aka strip tie wtf ever works the best no damage what so ever done to video card cant say the same about the screw indentation marks.
Calm down a little, no offense was mean't :)Quote:

:nono: If you want to get banned, you're on the right path :)Quote:

Voltage increase via bios doesn't work for the 7800's. Only way to get more than 1.4V is to do a volt mod. Also, if you choose to do so, dont go over 1.55-1.6V ;)Quote:

Any other way to do this besides using screws? There is no way I'm doing that to a 500 dollar card
Maybe I'll just wait for some of the custom coolers to come out
Dont you know what a cable tie is? you can buy at lowes home depot and other places. this holds the fan on perfectly, fine this is what im using, hey rick i like keeping my stuff in good shape!get banned for typing wtf? lolQuote:

thats that im using easy to change out from my 80 mm to 92mm fan
this is better than after market coolers
Yeah dude that's why I asked whether you could ziptie it on but no one answered
hey man just wrap the tie all the way around the card/fan dont worry the blades wont come close to rubbing and tuck the tie where the end of the pci connector part ends if you have common sense you will figureout what i mean lol.Quote:

a long zip-tie all the way around the card and the fan will hold it nicely =]
I figured what the heck and gave it a try. This will get you the coolest temps on air cooling on the 7800gtx that I have found. My idle temps went from 44 to 38c and my load temps went from 62 to 48c. I should also add that I was able to overclock my BFG 7800 GTX to 499/1420 and mantain idle temps of 39 and 51 under a full load. This is done at stock voltage of 1.449. I will be doing a volt mod later this week to see what I can get.Very easy mod with very good results. Here are the pics of how mine came out

Replaced with AS5 on the core, booted up and my old load was 61c, now it was 70c and still going up. Took it apart again, I guess the core contact wasn't good, so I globbed a lot more on (there was a ton of it on there stock). Booted, same deal. Took it off and now my load is ~65-66c. All that work and now my load temps are even more. :(
