1280x1024 on a CRT is like playing 1280x960 on an 17-19" LCD. They're different ratios and distort the displayed image. His desktop pics are also 1280x1024. The only way I've heard of being able to play 1280x1024 on a CRT without the distortion is using some image scaling feature in Catalyst CCC drivers.

I completely understand what you mean about LCD, they're easier to get around and are easier on the eyes for reading and writing, as I am now, but using an LCD to game is like trying to go offroading with a Porche. Either way, 1280x1024 on a CRT definately isn't an aspect ratio anyone with a CRT should be using - 1280x960 is.

Yes, BF2 has a requirement of 256mb ram, but even if it refuses to install with less, you can always install with more and uninstall it after it's on the drive. Some people did that with 32mb for Windows XP for whatever reason, thinking 64 was too much. :eek:

Yes, it's an LCD Im using - 8ms response with max res 1280x1024 75hz.

With the 7800 GTX you can enable Transparency Supersampling and gamma correct AA which are shown in the Screenshots along with 4x aa and 16x af. Using the 7800 GTX this is highly playable (60 - 100 fps) and looks great.

There is a world of difference in going from 1GB to 2GB in BF2, so I would imagine you havent yet tried with 256 MB, I'm sure that would hitch and stutter like a motherf:soap:r. Even [H] goes into it about 2GB of memory for BF2 in their latest review.

You will notice in the graphs that there seem to be spikes in performance shooting downwards, such as in the second graph above dropping to 11FPS. This is actually because of RAM. We know there has been a lot of talk recently about the RAM requirements for this game. The requirement is for 512MB and the recommended amount is 1GB. Our test system has 1GB. However, as we found out during game play, there was extreme hitching as soon as you entered a mission. As you ran around the map the hitching stopped, but when you first load it up, the game seems to be loading textures into memory. This especially happened at high resolutions like 1600x1200. Lower resolutions did not hitch as badly with 1GB of RAM. When we put 2GB of RAM in our system, we found the hitching to be non-existent. In fact, loading times were also improved with 2GB of RAM. This is something you may want to keep in mind if you plan to run at high resolutions with AA.

I'm not sure what the point of this would even be, yea that would be really beneficial LOL ... so the requirement is 256 MB, but you would install it with 256 MB then remove a stick and go game with 128MB when everyone else is recommending 2 GB, ok yea.. :rolleyes:

Yeah, those are features of the 7800, but I thought this thread was about the differences between 1gb and 2gb of RAM. A frameshot is a single frame, which doesn't tell me or anyone anything other than the detail setting of the game and the quality of the graphics card. You could be running the 7800 on a Pentium 3 and 64mb of ram and it wouldn't make a difference visually.

Yes, there is a difference, I was just trying to figure out how screen shots of the game proved any of that. ;)

Missing the point completely... :rolleyes: The amount of RAM doesn't affect what a single frame would tell me. Point was, 2gb or 256mb, it looks the same. Even with the framerate in plain site, it doesn't tell me anything because more RAM is beneficial in intense moments. Even adding more VRAM doesn't affect how the game looks.

It started as 1GB vs 2GB but then I showed screenshots as people were asking - in the end 2GB made a huge difference and the 7800 with gamma correct and transparency Supersamplig look great!

Yeah. Last time I played Half-Life 2, it was with a x800Pro (modded to 16pipes and PE speeds) and it never looked that good. Makes me want to pick up a 7800GTX as well. Trying to resist, if only to give ATI a shot at my cash with its new GPU and Crossfire.

BTW- Nice thread. Seems like anyone who is actively gaming is singing the praises of 2gig set-ups. I'm playing EQ2 and BF2 19x12 now and still no sign of any memory related stutter.

When I played FarCry the first time I had a 9800XT, 1024x768 with no AA/AF, I need to replay it with the 7800 GTX. Wouldn't even be the same game.

You should try it on the 64-bit windows with the farcry 64-bit patch.

hi i jsut got another gig of ram i had 2x 512mb ocz now i got the same again how come its set to 2T can i change it to 1T or will it freak any help will be nice manys thanks :)

If you are using 4 x 512s and enable CPC it will either not post or it will hang.
1T and 4 dimms still doesnt work.

so you can really notice a difference? from what i saw on amd's site, there wasn't much to get worked up about. it only looked like you could see a tad farther and the rocks had a bit more detail. do you get better fps, or is it just the extra detail that makes it better? i've been contemplating slapping xp64 on, but haven't found a good enough reason.

Is that with an 7800GTX?, or does this 2 gig setup run just as good and smooth with an x850xt pe? I ask cause this is what i have.

Now as to BF2, a friend who has the game told me that there was a patch that came out to fix high mem usage, since some peeople were showing BF2 using 800mb of it when the game recommends 512.
Then he told me the patch was a disaster, yeilding high mem leakage and that EA recommended reinstalling the game if you had installed the patch.
Can anyone confirm this? thanks! :)

yea the latest patch is not good at all, they did advise uninstalling if you istalled the patch.

I'm leaning towards the Ballistix. Great numbers coming from the 4x512's @ 2T tho. The UTT might get better numbers but thats alot of voltage for a 24-7 set up. Plus theres alot of dead UTT poppin up with the DFI boards. I lost 2 OCZ VX UTT myself. OCZ is workin on a 2gig kit that i'm really interested in. 2.5 Cas 250+ i believe is what they're shootin for. Check my sig for my 24-7 ballistix setup. I am also prime and 32m stable @ 277*10 3-3-3-8 2.6v. Major just recieved his ballistix tonight and already poppin up with similar numbers.

Newegg has 1 GB kits of Redline for $140. Crucial ballistix memory is much more expensive.

Also, I'm only using 3.1v and have great case cooling so they aren't even warm.

Damn your lucky. My redlines wont do 2-2-2 no matter what i do to them, but they do run 2-3-2 just fine :shrug:
