thorry, are you sure socket 754 will stay alive for 5 years? that sounds a little too optimisitic to me... amd doesnt force anything but listens a lot to the market, and the market wants 939 and not 754, wich is why they might phase out 754 in one year i think...

and gsus_freak, the low temp bug has most likely to do with the imc and not with the temp probe (there are two low temp bugs if you will, one related to the temp probe misreading temps of 0 and below and the imc problem at low temps i think)

and kevin, i wouldnt ever take the cpu out of the board its stuck in right now!!! :D you risk losing more pins and maybe it will make bad or no contact on some pins if you remove it and put it back in ^^

I'm always optimistic, but why do you need dual channel to run Office? Or on your laptop?

Socket 754 has excellent performance except for the dual channel. This is noticable in prime/pi and things like games and 3dmark. But in Office or when surfing/simple games/multimedia you don't know the difference.

And the thruth is that CPU's have outrun themselves @ speed, you don't need that much speed to have a good PC. A simple Sempron 2400+ with an 6600 videocard will do just about anything for the average user who doesn't need 200 fps in his games or 30 secs in prime.

Also the price of socket 754 is low compared to 939 systems because all of the other components (mobo features, oc features, cooling, memory etc) is matched to the budget.

If you look @ socket-A, it's been around for about 5 years now and will be around for another 1 year depending on stocks. Socket 754 is the follow up and will be used in mobile systems (like laptops, tablet PC etc).

Socket 754 has been around since end 2003 and I believe it will be around till end 2008 at least.

Problem is developments are going faster and faster and faster so only time will tell.

I don't know what is more incredible. The fact that your super FX is still alive or how composed you were when you first dropped the CPU. I'm sure I would have needed someone to talk me back off the ledge of a high building.

THough u know OPB, u should send it for RMA and AMD would send you a new one only cos they've probably never seen anything like this before lol and all their engineers will be like: "WTF !!!!! Even we DIDNT NO THAT !!!!! Must have something to do with the Red Sox winning...." :ROTF:

Though, if you have the courage to :D, why dont u take a few more pics of the pins, see if it still works when u put it back lol...prolly will I guess.

actualy perkam....you may be onto something. If the pin that was removed was just the ECC pin (which i dont think they have en entire pin dedicated to ECC, haven't looked), then putting a 940 in a 939 might be posible. Hell, if you tried to put a 939 in a 940 and turned ECC off would it work??? I am not brave enough (since our 940's are more like the companys and less like mine). Ill check the pin layout and see what is up.

940's work with unbuffered ram as well, as long as the motherboard bios supports it: Hint new Abit dual opteron board, and Tyans.. both based on nVidia chipset.

If we know which pin is the extra one we could use a hot needle and melt a hole in the socket so the pin doesnt have to be broken off, too.

someone in belgium had the same thing :)
He broke 2 pins of and the cpu still works and gained 30mhz :p

Opb is good example its not that much. I have my own examples too.

Ive droped couple times several hdds - they still works without hitch , no bads.

Ive putted my Amd K4 100 ( it was top ) in cpu socket, but in wrong direction. There was some smoke. I though my cpu burned. I was curious if it can swim, ive droped it to glass with water. After some months ive bought new system, tried old cpu on my new mobo, and guess what .. it was working. The old mobo was also working with my new cpu , but some multipliers wasnt working.

Several times i was checking how hot are my system rams and gpu ram with my fingers and there was spark, only thing that happend was restart. And imagine i know some guys that doesent touch ram chips even if theyre not plugged :/

as you can see the only pin that is different is the pin in the upper left corner. you get a spaure cut away with the 939 as opposed to the triangle with the 940. Just have to find the book on the 940 to find out what the pin layout is. If ne1 has an online reffernce that would help too cause the office is not really orginize :\

edit*** atualy they also move the black out pin spots on the 939 up for the top and down for the bottow spot...that might be a problem

ya, indeed beat slayer. The hope in my mind is that I can cut away some pins on a 939 and slap it in my 940. I probly wont work...but I can always dream. Looks like if I were to cut away the corisponding chips from a 939 to match up with a 940, they would be a VDD and a VDDIO. That is not good. I would kill a VDD or two without worrying, but a VDDIO is a little scary to me. And I still don't know what the pin in the upper left does. It is surrounded by power and HTT connections, scary.

Just if you wanted to know. The thermal diode is at aj:1-2. and the thermal trip diode (to sent halt state at high temps)is at ag-10. The resest (freze, halt state pin) is lockated at f-8.
