OK...
Had a chance to OC a bit before sleep. This is stable enough to bounce around windows and run a Sandra or two. The heat is a problem, though. Really gonna' need the subzero cooling to shine. Bur fairly impressive...I could grabscreenies a bit higher, but this is a fairly comfortable AIR OC at room temp 24C.

FWIW, benching 3D at 1.4V loaded is only 41C.... and that's on Abit's lousy sensors!
Hmm...how's it 3dmark at 4.0 GHz??? I gotta know...
BTW...when will we be able to buy a Prescott above 2.8???
For that "long" of a benchmark, it'll need real cooling. May be able to bang out a PiFast at 4gHz, though...Quote:

Well, Charlie, what air cooling are we talking about? Stock cooling and a weak fan or a 100CFM Delta + SP94?
Isn't the Vcore a bit high? How about the Sudden Nortwood (Prescott?:)) Death Syndrom?

It might only be 1.6v, but that's with a lower starting voltage than the Northwood core chips.

Well 4 GHz on air is not to be sniffed at, not stable tho which is a shame. Maybe with the prommie it will shine :)

I think it is pretty good...NW's at 4ghz on air was not common place at all (normal air, not freezing).
no telling how to calc power comsumption.

0.25v ... thats almost a 20% increase in vcore. a 20% increasement on a nw would mean running it at 1.8v ... thats where the first nw's died at...
and nw's at 4ghz were not common, but now they are.... the latest nw's seem to oc VERY nice. seen a lot of 4ghz+ on air lately. stable!
didnt somebody say prescotts will oc to 4.5ghz on air? ^^
the guy on the austrian ocer forum who posted prescott screenies and bench results and claimed it was on air now says it was just a misunderstanding :rolleyes:

wow, from 3ghz to 4 is very good on air. very impressive.
Prescott is good for overclockers since many overclockers use good cooling anyway.
Intel's only making these for one reason, to allow various people (their engineering facility, and select reviewers) to see what the various real processors will be like. The multipliers are programmed into these chips, and for them the only ones of interest are the ones relating to chips they are going to sell retail.Quote:

As well, that's crazy high voltage already. The chips if you saw intels original documentation on prescott meant it to be for 1.2V... obviously that's not happening due to "issues" with the 90nm process. The things come stock overvolted. I'm thinking there are going to be a lot of dead prescotts flying around soon enough, unless the changes they've made to the materials in the process stop electromigation. With all the leakage current though (which is what causes the heat we've been seeing), I wouldn't count on it.

Yesterday at Fry's & RadioShack I grabbed:
2 x 100 ohm Trimmers
a new soldering iron tip (needle tip)
some better 60/40 solder and some paste
(oh and a nice optical mouse for $6.99, my M$oft model was $40)
and some more AS5
Oh and BTW, for all the Henny Penny's out there, the default Voltage is 1.3875 on a Prescott :rolleyes:
I've reviewed HIPRO5's article SEVERAL times. I think 4/5 of the mods are pretty easy. The Vagp looks like a bi*tch. However, having a problem finding some of the components locally. Anyone have a online link for a store that sells 2200uF/6.3V cap's and SMD resistors???
It appears the cut-trace mods are BAD, but not that bad. I've practiced on an old p2 motherboard I have laying around. You just let the razor blade dig in a bit, but not "hard". Then you take an Xacto knife and lightly "scrape" the trace until the top coating "shaves" off revealing solder-able metal.
SO will start that stuff ASAP. As for the 3.0@4.0, I'm impressed. It did it with little or no strain. My memory is a problem. At 2.8V, I can run 2-3-3-6 up to about 236. Looks like I'll need to find some BH-5.
And I know everyone is screaming about the high voltage... well I personally don't believe in SN/PDS (knock, knock.) The chip responded well with voltages into the 1.6XX's. In fact under DI I will gladly subject it to the full 1.75 allowed on the IC7-BIOS21. It's not a bad chip. In fact after this is all over i may turn this little beauty into my main desktop CPU. It's HT, it's blazing fast around windows (even faster than my FX-51 on the desktop) and personally I like it.
Just for s&g for people curious of such things, I'll take the rig out on the back porch tonight to get some better "cold air" benchies. That 4G is in a normal room with 24C temps. The HSF is a Swiftech MCX478w/Delta 80mm x 38mm.
Now talk to me about PiFast guys...
How do you tune for PiFast/SuperPI?? I assume highest FSB, highest total mHz?? I ran a PiFast NEAR 4G on air and the results were a bit weak....the last time I ran PiFast it was on the FX @ 2900 at 42s....so the Prescott feels a bit puny. So...Pi test tips???

You cant do much really...if all the drivers are installed then the max you can gain by turning ยงยงยงยง off is like 0.2s
A NW P4 at 4 GHz does something like 47-48 seconds I believe that would be a normal time.

At Fry's... I was pretty impressed with their selection of stuff EXCEPT their pcb components like caps and resistors and such....sux! BTW, that mouse is a "BTC" brand (?) but it works great! A $6.99 optical mouse, hehehe....who said NAFTA (free trade agreement) was a bad idea??
