 I couldn't find the option in FF so downloaded tab mix plus. Only after FF restarted did a box pop up telling me FF supports session restore. Very weird theres no option I could find and it took the download of the plugin to "prod" session restore to active. All is now well with the world again though :D
I just tested it and it works, though not exactly as you describe. I don't know how to get it to open a specific set of tabs from scratch on startup. But with tab mix it will remember all of the tabs you have open and all the windows you have open. If you open a different set of tabs in two separate windows then using file->exit (instead of closing each window with the X) tab mix can open both windows in their exact position with all of their tabs when you start firefox again.
Edit: It has occurred to me that you can in fact start firefox only with a specific set of tabs each time you start (instead of all the ones you had open last time you closed the browser). In tab mix options there is a session tab. On that tab if you disable firefox's built-in session management it makes a significant number of options for session management available. You could probably set it to save the session on close once (with all of your default tabs open) and exit via file->exit, then next time set it to not save the session at startup. Then when you use file->exit and then open it back up it would restore the last saved session (the one with your tabs and windows the way you like).
open the ff options and go to the general options tab. under startup there's a dropdown menu where you can choose "show windows and tabs from last session".
my ff is in german, so the captions of the options are just translated and might be different in the actual english version.
For those concern with memory leaks (unjustified - high memory usage) there is an add-on that helps a lot with this matter: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...on/memory-fox/ - would have been nice if this was integrated as a feature, at least until they find a fix at core of the problem. ;)
PS.After install you need to activate it - right click on Icon -> "Activate Memory Fox - Browser Only"
FF 5 kicks ass.... bugs fixed.

I used to have a massive memory leak with the initial FF4 on NT6.1 x64. Firefox doesn't sip memory but having 8GB installed ATM isn't bad. I'm using FF5 now; I didn't use FF4 because of said memory leak and the complete removal of stuff like the Status Bar and the useless Pin Tab (which is working now).
You could enable the status bar on FF4, it wasn't permanently removed ;)
