the northbridge has 38 pcie lanes for slots (x16/x16/x4/x1/x1), another 4 for the southbridge (x4) and the southbridge offers another 4 x1 lanes
the X16 slots can be devided into 4 x8 slots and all slots are pcie 2.0

oh crap.. so you are saying if you have crossfire/sli you are already using 32 lanes so you have 6 left? plus 4 off the south. can the south share lanes off the main 38 or is it that bogus 4x slot at the bottom again?
if you have those 2 main x16 populated what is that x8 slot actually running at? thats what I want to know.
there is alot more flexibility in the chipset
cou can run the northbridge in:
x16/x16/x4/x1/x1
x16/x8/x8/x4/x1/x1
x8/x8/x8/x8/x4/x1/x1
x8/x8/x8/x8/x1/x1/x1
afaik it supports up to 7 slots in all possible combinations (the southbridge supports another 4 x1 slots)
most higher end boards switch from x16/x1/x16/x1/x4 to x16/x8/x8/x1/x4 when you plug in an x8 or x16 addin card into the 3rd x16 slot the same goes to the 4th slot (x8/x8/x8/x8/x4)
990fx has 2 times more lanes than sandy bridge and the same amount as X58
