Can't wait. Thanks for confirming, I thought I was missing something.

Nope! We investigated this a while back.
Basically, many times patches which improve performance are overlooked and instead people assume it is the drivers that have been improved.
Case and point: DiRT 2...

Typically, I have found that both AMD and NVIDIA drivers tend to improve performance in games which were released between driver revisions. Yes, there are some times when tweaks in the drivers expand framerates in existing games but those situations are few and far between since optimizations are usually already built in.
Muropaketti: GTX 590... and 6990 wins performance 6-4 and games 5-2. Eyefinity tests included.
At least nVidia is competitive on the high end single card now, they haven't been in awhile.

agree with you %100,yet ati always seemed to be plauged by drivers and certain games but on paper(tech specs)ATI always made a better card then Nvidia.Nvidia(and now intel)always stay VERY close to game developers vs ATI and Nvidia makes it a point to have drivers out for before the game is even released.this is how Nvidia makes up for the hardware dept, and why as a gamer stay with Nvidia cards(plug and play,no headaches).and this is why i stick with nvidia and a gamer.i need it to run my new game "out of the box" no waiting for new drivers or releases, fixes, etc.
**i dont like this news :P here**

cpu scaling--
now lets take video card out of the equation for 1 minute and just look at 1 thing u did not mention.cpu scaling, cpu overclocking giving a direct FPS increase in certain games.this info is simply mind blowing.
Call of Duty: Black Ops GPU & CPU Performance In-depth-by "techspot"
"Black Ops on the other hand saw a massive 78% increase in performance when clocking our Core i7 processor from 2.0GHz up to 4.0GHz, and we continued to see a performance increase right up to the maximum tested frequency. Both the minimum and average frame rates were affected, suggesting that users who are in need of better performance will want to overclock their processor for this game."

my setup-
Evga/koolance waterblock gtX 480(bone stock)32c.Running Black Ops on my Sony fw-900 24 inch black ops at @ 2304x1440 16:10(WIDE)80hz 80 SOLID fps.this is only possible because of the 4.2ghz i7 930 behind my watercooled stock speed single 480.....cpu scaling-key.i told my three of my buddys(they run i7,s 920 4ghz watercooled rigs, live 15min away) who bought SLI gtx 470,s INSTEAD save money and buy a single 480 as it will be no problem at any res if u push yout i7 past 4ghz.they hate me,haha.there lcds res,hz rate come no were near my FW-900,s(i have 2).
Predictably few Dragon Age 2 benchmarks around.

I wonder why?
"I wonder why?"
ATI make better cards(on paper),yes i said it as i prefer and buy Nvidia cards for the stabilty,no bugs on games i play(quake 4,bf2-the orignal w all mapacks,mw1,mw2,blk ops,bf2-bad company(sucks-bad game play, played for 8hours,unistalled).the 6990 has 4 gigs of gddr5 on it,jeez...props to ATI as that is AMAZING for hi res gamers like myself running on my Sony 24in FW-900 moniters(2304x1440 16:10 80hz 80 fps).ati rocked this one and the ram(4gigs!?!?!) plays a CRUCIAL role for hi res gaming, its been proven.oh forgot to mention the crazy stock clocks on the dual gpus...ATI did good with this round.props!

HardOCP (Kyle?) isn't impressed with the GTX 590.

We truly thought the GTX 590 was going to make the Radeon 6990 look bad, but the fact of the matter is that NVIDIA made the 6990 look that much better. The GTX 590 is not the "World's Fastest Single Card Solution" as stated on our page 1 slides; the Radeon HD 6990 is very much retaining that title. Hail to the King, baby!

SKYMTL, this one specific example I would highlight:

Within our review of the HD 6990 we mentioned that a strong driver stack is a must for any dual GPU product. Without quick SLI support for new games, the GTX 590 will be dead in the water. A good example of this was the GTX 590’s performance in Just Cause 2 where framerates took an unexpectedly plunge at higher resolutions with AA enabled. This in effect had a profound impact upon the 2560 x 1600 / 8x AA results we have above. Hopefully a situation like this is the exception rather than an omen of things to come.

As with every other multi core graphics cards, the success or failure of the HD 6990 largely hinges on AMD’s driver development team stepping up to the plate in a big way. As we saw in testing, its mission accomplished….for now. If they can keep this head of steam going and roll out application profiles in rapid order as the busy spring gaming season heats up, then early adopters should have nothing to fear. However, if Crossfire support for new games trickles out months after release, Antilles’ design could be rendered ineffective in short order. It should also be mentioned that while driver stability was spot-on, the Catalyst Control Center is another matter altogether and if you’re upgrading from a previous AMD card, be ready to face some possible issues.
