the new layout sure dosnt look WC friendly. i guess they decided it was best to have VRM near the front for better air cooling temps. and it might be why on caymen they put them in the back again since they wanted better WC support.

When are you guys gonna start putting water channels over the vrms?
I doubt you would need it on the HD68xx series, they just don't get that hot. The HD69xx series might be different though.
Possibly, but they seem to be neglected on most cards, if needed or not. I mean we pay enough for the blocks already, might as well do it right and not worry if it is good enough without or not. Be proactive, not reactive.
I guess this will be more of an issue on the higher end cards like you said. Then people will be complaining of vrm temps, and it will be too bad.. we already designed the blocks. Then it becomes a search for who actually impliments vrm cooling into their blocks. I'm just speaking from experience from my 5970 blocks. Which really lacked good vrm cooling, water near the vrms isn't the same as adding channels to actually take heat away from them.
Manicdan: i'm guessing that even with most widely relative share-wise liquid cooled gpus it's at least 100 common air cooled cards for 1 liquid cooled. And probably it's way too optimistic for even most liquid cooled cards. So i doubt in reality of statement that some of PCBs are somewhat intentionally LC optimised. If some PCB is easier to design blocks for .. it has happened by chance not intention. This hobby is almost unnoticeably narrow niche in big picture of PC market. well the idea of moving the fets to the front of the card so they get the last of the air, instead of the first, is a great move for exhaust based air cooling. and sofar the caymen pictures look to be using the old style of having them in the back. maybe so they are directly compatible with older heatsinks, or because thats where the power comes in and its more effecient, or because they dont expect to use exhaust only cooling for alot of aftermarket stuff (air or water) and so it dosnt need to be up front
i found it odd how quickly they jumped from a good idea back to the classic idea and how it impacts the WC blocks.

The HD6870 will get its own block for those who want to cool everything. Of course the already mentioned block is still compatible to the HD6870 and is also working. More to the right are a few parts that get very warm but not critical hot. It will be up to you if you want to spend a few more bucks on the larger block.

What's a few more bucks? Are we talking $100 versus $75? Or are we talking $100 versus $90?
EK Has introduced a full cover block for the 6850/70 which is available on their website.
So basically the blocks cost half of what the card costs. Guess I will stick with my GPU only blocks till someone puts out one under $100.
what i want to know is a list of other reference pcbs :| HIS is the only one confirmed on the cooling configurator :| it would be awesome if diamond was one that works, as the stores near me have tons of them. is there any way of finding out without needing a visual check?
Our 6870 block is now available. A block for the 6850 is due 11/29.
This one's a little different-- we're using acetal for the top. Otherwise, nickel-plated copper and microfins over the GPU.

Really like that block, just wish it wasn't almost half of what I paid for card, but you get what you pay for, so knowing me I will probably get it. When will Koolance start taking paypal?
