any chance we get an explanation on what caused the slow bug?

The bios works, but surely the GTX480 needs more mods to be really flying. Without CBB hardmod, you have to warm up too much and get condensation too rapidly.

Can you take it off smooth enough to put it back on if that don't work?

You don't have to take it off. Just lift the VCC pin and the IC will not function anymore.
