The blocks look great!
Your business is now in So Cal?
do you guys know when ill be able to get my hands on this block in australia? thanks
edit- epsilon 5970 that is
Oh lawd, that pin matrix must be wonderful to machine.
Ordered one HD5870-HS. Can't wait to have it installed.
Ive seen a few people ask in this post but I havnt seen a response yet so here we go:
Gabe, when do you think the clear ones will be available IF ever?
Just curious cause Im hoping to build a show case and 2 of these would make quite the addition
5870 heatsink installed. The heatsink is doing a great job. Much better job on the VRMs than the 4870X2 caldera.
5870 running at 1000/1300 with 1.3v, OCCT GPU Error check stable.
Here are some not so great pics. Good point and shoot camera but horrible lighting in the room:

what are you VRM temps when OCed in OCCT?
You can gain another 30c's on your VRM temps by removing the thermal pads, and dropping a dab of arctic ceramique on each vrm. I just did it here, and I have to say that temps are phenomenal. This O/C is before I flashed this 5850 to an asus5870 bios. Now working on improving the O/C. Nonetheless, the 1.25 voltage generates quite a bit of heat, and this is a good indication that a simple $29 heatsink with a hard grease mount instead of the soft pads, and adequate ventilation works as well as a F/C block.

Now, this is the same test with totally passive cooling (no ventilation). It still remains under the max 125C limit despite the high overclock/high overvolt conditions, something that the stock cooling solution cannot do.

Overclocked in OCCT I get about 100~110C MAX IIRC (room temps 29C ~ 30C, I know it's hot, I live in PR).
That's great to know. I thought if I used thermal paste it would leave a space between VRMs and heatsink. I'll try it out. Thanks.
Great product. Its good to see GPU solutions out early in the game. I think a few of your blocks for other GPUs, while just as great, came out a bit too late to be great sellers.

Interesting, it seems like the white and R23 chips are not in contact with the heatsink.
Phil
Correct. By the way, I should have clarified that I measured these temps while running this board at 1.35v !!!
Also, here is a temp update for this 5850 at 1000/1200 @1.35v
http://www.swiftnets.com/assets/imag...D5850-HS-5.jpg
Regarding VRM temps, what we see here is just fine in active cooling (HD fan blowing in the direction of the heatsink for example, or side panel fan), in fact we even have room to spare if needed; but it wouldn't work in a totally passive cooling mode under a benchmark such as Furmark like in the example I was showing in the above post. So we just witnessed the upper over-volt limit of this thermal solution in PASSIVE mode (no fan), under Furmark: probably between 1.25v and 1.3v.
Incidentally, I double-checked the VRM temps under the Unigine Heavens benchmark, and they were all in the 50's, as opposed to Furmarks' 70's.
Now, with reference to the above, I installed the Komodo HD5800 to this card, AND ALSO removed the VRM thermal pads. low and behold, we are getting very good temps at 1.35v as shown below:
http://www.swiftnets.com/assets/imag...O-HD5850-1.jpg
But since I am on a roll testing, I decided to tune-down the card to a more reasonable voltage and to drop the OC to 950. Incidentally, these are the same settings than those found in the recent comparative published by the German site PCgameshardware here: http://extreme.pcgameshardware.de/wa...d-5870-oc.html
Assuming that this number is an average, they found 69.2C at the VRM temps with their stock Komodo, as shown below:
http://extreme.pcgameshardware.de/at...70-oc-vddc.jpg
And this is what I am finding, with the thermal pads removed:
http://www.swiftnets.com/assets/imag...O-HD5850-2.jpg
This is an average of 49.6C to be compared to 69.2C. I know that the cards are different, the cooling loops are different, but what's important here is the order of magnitude of difference. 20C! this is very indicative of what removing the thermal pads and going grease instead will yield as an improvement.
These results were also confirmed during extensive testing we recently did on the Epsilon HD5900.
Conclusions: pads are out, grease is in, welcome to the new king of VRM TIM!
Hi, sorry for my bad english I'm french :)
I haved buy a HD5850-HS with a MCW60 and my temperatures are bad :(
The GPU temp 1 is good, it don't go over 55° (I don't search extremely good temperature, just silent :) ) on furmark
But the GPU temp 2 is more annoying, it go over 85° in less than 10 second
The same for the GPU temp 3 just the temperatures go to 70°
The VRMs go over 90° if I let furmark for a long time.
Thank you in advance :)
