i'd rather it be another 8800 gtx card again at 650 that drops in price in a month then a non 8800gtx card thats cheap

Not double I don't believe. Unless you're counting the GX2.
I mean I know I personally went from a 8800 GTS 640mb, to this 260, and I wasn't exactly blown away.
It's all in the details though, look at how long a wait there was between G80 and G200. G92 was just a distraction so people thought they were getting faster cards.
*Edit* Found a good review. http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...ed-review.html
You can see that an overclocked GTX 280 isn't quite double the speed. But I will concede in a few games there like Crysis it gets close.
before i start to respond as i have read this thread carefully.
leaks, rumors,he said, she said etc etc..whatever who cares, dont bicker about tidbits ..heres the facts.
nvidia, ati, and intel are all making cards coming out sometime period(fact).
who will be first, better, and cheaper is the debate .
with that said now to quote and respond to some ppl below....

a heavily watercooled overclocked gtx 260 will walk all over 2 8800,s in sli.and in so many ways--heat,SPACE,power consumption and very close performance for a SINGLE card costing only $154(gtx260) after rebate vs 2 older g80,s in sli...i tell MANY guys on the fence about grabbing another 8800 series to sli them vs selling there old 8800 and buying a single gtx 260,275,285 etc.no brainer.8800gt/gtx still can get $60-100 used, invest another $50 out of pocket and u have a gtx 260.....then down the road grab another 260...then your talking performance for $.future proofing.
*side note*
99.9% of ppl know for the record know the gts-250 is a 9800gtx with new stickers(rebadged),tiny overclock.the gtx 260+ is the true gt200 core.
"so I can buy a GTX295 next month with peace in mind"
yes u can($509 good deal),im being relaistic here as i always have nvidias top cards(overnighted 8800gtx, dual and single pcb gtx 295,s on release dates).but i know i my mind q2 2010 is about right for the "300"....gtx 295 single pcb is a amazing buy for now til wayyy (winter time) past xmas.bf2 1943(autumn 09),call of duty4 modern warfare2(nov 10),fear2,prey2,rage...these games will love to see a gtx 295 in your rig.
money well spent

cost prediction of the nvidia "300"
i think the real question at hand is going by nvidias track record of king of card prices, how much will the "gtx 300" cost $600-$800? i myself wont spend a dime on nvidia until i see a larabee midline card released first and go from there.cause intel stated the midline larabee will be relased first(give ppl a taste)then there flagship will come later.after i see a midline $300 larabees numbers i will better understand what a flagship larabee can do.imagine plunking down $600 on a nvidia "300" then 2 months+ later a $300 larabee walks all over it...we shall see....paitence.for now the gtx 295 is a complete no brainer for consumers and there needs for single slot game crushing solution.

intel vs nvidia and ati
i really hope intels "larebee" video card comes out first to FORCE nvidia and ATI to keep there "300,R740" cards introduction prices reasonable and not outrageous.on paper the larebee could completely destroy nvidia and ati in 1 fail swo0p and i really hope they do.intel aint playin around in 2010 :o they want it all.time will tell,"larabee" really looks amazing on paper and is VERY possible and we all know this.intel has more net worth then both companies and if they want something they will get it.intels head scout recruiters for "larabee" project hired some of the worlds best ppl for the task making this a reality so0n.
2010 intel cpus and gpus could easily crush the performance world across both worlds(cpu 32nm,gpus).go intel!im a hardcore gamer and actually use my video for games.3dmark06 and Vantage are NOT games, there benchmarks for showing off what your pc can do in "real interactive games"...ppl plz stop calling benchmarks games, there not.
these are exciting times!paitence!:D
ATI will be first, Nvidia second, and Intel will likely be a little after Nvidia. ATI knows what the market is like right now, and will price things accordingly, leveraging the lower cost of die and components to help increase sales. Nvidia and Intel will follow suit in pricing to some degree, attempting to leverage higher performing parts to justify higher prices and margins.Quote:

Um, no one said anything about "dominance"? My only point was the order of release which is fairly easy to figure out based either on rumors or AMD's Sept. Bash (which is a press conference admittedly, but hardware soon to follow likely). ATI gets to set the price point for the moment. ATI's cost of production is likely to be a bit less, again based on rumors of predicted die size, etc. It's all economics, no mention of performance anywhere.
railmeat, intel never said lrb mainstream comes first, on the contrary, the last roadmap i saw showed highend LRB first and the mainstream card comes quite a bit after that, 1-2 quarters later... too much imo... they probably corrected that but i doubt they will launch mainstream first and then highend... they need a marketing bang and they know it...
the only reason to launch a mainstream card first is if their highend card is mainstream compared to everybody elses products... if LRb launches and doesnt beat nvidia and ati or at least come close, its not cause thats their strategy, its because they CANT beat them, at least at that time...
and i wouldnt advice anybody to buy a gtx295 atm...
atis new cards are coming very soon, wait for another few weeks and if anything, prices drop a bit by then, and possibly a lot and the 295 gets beaten by ati...
Nvidia will be first with actual DX11 cards to buy in the store, and will have a performance monster on their hands. This is closer to what they wanted the 280 to be, only better now with what they have learned about GPU Computing...
The 300 series will make us weep with joy.
A was able to derive all that information from the swagger in Jen-Hsun Huang's walk. Something that isn't covered in most press releases, and doesn't show on paper.
Brace for impact. :D
Sorry Talon, but in EVERY thread of i've seen you in, you have a strong nvidia vibe.
Nothings EVER AMD/ATI with you
its always NVIDIA this or NVIDIA that or PHYSX
I mean come on... you can't really believe that they'll come out first...
Its weird because you don't ACTUALLY say any stupid fan boy stuff... but your attitude just emanates a sense of *facepalm*
You're kidding right?
AMD already has taped out the new DX11 line and have had samples for months now. As Sayaa says they are stocking up right now and WILL be first there is no doubts about it.
Nvidia hasn't even taped out yet thus has no cards waiting to be sent to resellers from their 3rd party buddies. This is facts - but I do believe Nvidia will manage to release their GT300 line later 2009, in limited numbers but it will be released and reviewed for some hype.

Thanks for the post! :)
I have. You act like people who select Nvidia haven't considered ATI.
You want my thought process?
Nvidia:
Better Folders...
PhysX...
CUDA...
Nvidia's relations with developers, and providing the drivers for the latest games fast...
Appears to have a high commitment toward GPU Computing, more so than the other companies.
I can buy EVGA brand, for the best support and 90 day Step Up Program. (I have used it once already.)
Can remove stock cooling with warranty still in tact!! (Thanks EVGA)
ATI
Leaf Blower fans...
No CUDA, and insted get you get STREAM.
If baught in the US, I believe your warranty is voided if you remove the stock cooling.
No PhysX, and not sure they will do a good job with OpenCL drivers...
ATI's Catalyst
You may not agree with me, but just giving me Fanboy status, like I blindly pick Nvidia with no other consideration is nuts.
Respect the faster cards. The best thing ATI has going for it is price.
I think people that can buy nVidia, people that can't buy ATI.
That is my opinion.
Few people act like NVIDIA is religion not just another GPU company and some even take this religion to fanatical extremes.
