Really hope I don't get a warning for bumping a thread this old, but I think it's better than open a new one to discuss this same topic.
So, I'm still running my "old" M4A78T-E with a Phenom II 545. When I got this setup (january 2010) it unlocked perfectly the 4 cores (tested with prime95 and some games), At the time I tested it, I'm not sure which bios version I was using (2303, 2402 or 2503).
As the x2 was enough for me at the time and I was using the box cooler, so turned it off.
By the end of last year I wanted some more power so tried to turn the ACC on again, but this time the system froze at the "starting windows" screen, but this time the board had already the 3401 bios (I try to keep updated to get the "improvements"; serious mistake), and EZ Flash won't slow to downgrade back to 2402.
The differences in hadrware: box cooler upgraded to zalman cnps10x (dual-fan setup, so heat is not a problem) | ram: added 2x 2gb markvision and kept original 2x1gb kingston, all 1333mhz (they work perfectly in dual-channel now).
Software: had winxp 32bit and now win7 64bit (really not sure if I still had xp)
Since memory works perfectly now, and acc does not overclock it, I think it's not ram related.
So, it must be the bios version, or should I test any other things first? what?
Thanks in advance and sorry again to dig the thread...

It's probably BIOS related. Try to downgrade BIOS. You may try AFU236U.zip in pure DOS. It's not 100% safe, so be ready for hot-flash...

Thanks!
Will try it tomorrow, starting with 2303, let's see what happens

If that works, then also try the latest 2x00 bios.
Most of the time when asus makes a 1x00 / 2x00 / 3x00 change it is very major.

Too late.. already flashed the 2303 (should have tested the latest 2x00), will try the unlock later, it's 5:20am and I still need to sleep :p
But I can assure you the 3x00 series are worthless for core unlocking... at least for the M4A78T-E, as my mobo already came with 2x00 and unlock worked, I should be testing just wih the 2x series, for now
Thanks for the tips!
Edit: ahh, now I've read properly, that's the idea!
But I should have tried the lastest 2x00 first, if that worked then I was set, if not I would try back again, now it should work but I will want to test the newer, and if dont work I will need to flash back again... :(

try unlock with 2303: no go
updated to 2702: also no go, even 3 cores (0, 2 and 3) that worked on 3401
and now? just buy a 960T and unlock to 6core? :P or is worth test the 2503?
Anyone heard of this before? the cpu stop unlocking? I also tried a linux livecd to make sure it was not windows related, but froze :(

Problem Solved! (not really)
Traded the 545 for my girlfriend's 555 BE, since she doesn't care for unlock or overclock and the 545 is enough for TF2 (the only "heavy" game she plays). This one was just turn on ACC in bios and done. Still using 2702 bios.
But later I remembered about turning off C1E and Cool and Quiet should help unlocking cores and I dont remember if I did this on the 545, so tested at my brother's 560BE that never even loaded windows with ACC on (like mine was lately). We turned off C1E and set core voltage to +0.1v (the lowest bump available) and NB to +0.05v (also the lowest) and gues what? it's been up for 5 hours, tested Arma2 an some other games, 4 cores working perfect! His MB is a Biostar TA880GB+
Will try this at the 545 when she get a better cooler (in fact, when I get a new one :p:) I don't trust the box one for this.
Next step with 555 is see how far it overclocks with 4 cores enabled! :D
So, for those trying to unlock cores, remember to carefully raise a little the voltage, should help
