Yes we may be a few months (more like a half year+) away from DX11 cards but we're maybe a few years from proper DX11 support in games. Just about now the DX10 support is gaining importance. :rolleyes:

If you feel like paying a price premium for the unapproved entry DX11 cards be my guest, I feel like spending my money on mature DX10 card, GT212 or the RV790 or other possibly upcoming ATI card releases being my top contenders for next upgrade.

Don't get me wrong, these entry DX11 cards could be very good too (maybe another "8800GTX") but I don't like gambling and the odds are on my side in the long run if choosing the just-b4-newgen-series cards. ;)

Ye, DX11 cards are very far away it seems. GPU sales already dropped 37% for AMD and atleast 40% or more for nVidia in Q4. Q1 will only drop further so we are down to way below 50% of the normal. Q2 will be the same, Q3. DX11 is Q4 or 2010. Not to mention that TSMCs 40nm node problems, aswell as TSMC is in utter disaster with some 60% decline for Q1.

Even Intel went with value/mobile as a priority over servers, highend etc for 32nm.

Each company tries on its own to survieve in these struggling times. Technology is just a luxory good. Something that gets axed as the first victims along with caffe late and crapple :p:

i don't understand why ppl still flaming the stock hsf on a 4870, as though it can't cool the card and it overheats and artifacts

as for the 4890, not sure if it's worth it for me, although i did pay 280 after tax for the 4870

45C idle means next to nothing. My 4850 would idle at 45C but that sure didn't stop it from hitting 83C load.

yea i have done it myself but its not like you can keep that on 24/7. that thing is so loud i can keep my door shut and hear it across the house. they need to start making a more practical stock cooler. if you ask my video card coolers these days look like cpu coolers from the 90s.

$200 must be for the 512MB version, and if this "rumor" holds to be true, then it might just be a clock speed increase and nothing else (like more shaders/TMU's..).. I just find $200 a bit too good to be true if it's gonna have more shaders/TMU's, in combination with 1GB of memory. 512MB is too low nowadays, so it's nearly non-sense for chips that powerful.

i would be happy if they would look like cpu coolers from the 90s, cause that would mean practically no heat and passive design. :D

With the prices supposedly in the $200-250 range, it sounds like the 4870s will drop quite a bit in price. :D

VR-Zone says it's going to be $250 for the standard edition and $300 for the OC edition.
I guess if the OC edition comes at that price then it should really be able to give the GTX285 a run for its money, otherwise it would be cheaper.

No one knows exactly what nVidia will have to counter AMD's offerings in April.
It would make sense to go into a more efficient-per-transistor design than GT200, hence making cheaper and same-performance GPUs like they did with the G80-G92 transition.

it will always go one way then the other at the moment nvidia lead the way, then amd will then overtake them, then nvidia will take over again lol :) nvidia much better drivers than amd so i will always go nvidia less problems in my opinion.

When did you try an AMD/ATI card for the last time? My graphic history is as follows:
Geforce 2 MX
Geforce 2 GTX
Radeon 9600 Pro
Geforce 6800 GT
Radeon X1800 GTO
Radeon X1950 Pro
Radeon HD-4870

Never experienced any severe issues with any of them ;) The driver might've been an issue back in the Radeon 9x00 days (I used the DNA back then afair) but I don't think it is any more, at least when you're running single-gpu.

Meh, the 790 is a nice performer, but still not amazing-ish in tech.

The 740... now that's nuts. The size of a 55nm 9500GT with triple the performance... notebooks?

The probability that 790 is a 40nm, with so many tries to even get 740 done properly, is slim. Really slim.
