as you can see, theres no doubt that 280 as much better cooler
much more aluminium, bigger cooper block to the GPU and
one more heat pipe... not to mention
the back plate the we all know what it can do when it comes to thermals
benefits, this gives the older 280 in my perspective an advantage in load
gameplay temperatures, as it can be more stable.
I've been getting game lockups with my EVGA GTX285 SSC.
At first I thought it was because I OC'd it too high because Deadspace wouldn't boot, but when I turned down the OC then it would boot. But I now get lockups with Warhammer Online in the oRvR areas. The screen will freeze with a sound effect looping over and over, like when the defense timer pops for a Battle Objective. It could be the new 182.06 WHQL driver. I reset the settings to default including the fan speed 40 and still got a lock. I noticed the card temp was hitting 48-52C, so I then upped the fan speed from the default 40 to 70 (which makes the sound like a hair dryer on Low). Now my temps are at 38-39C. I'll see how that goes.
I'm a bit disappointed that I can't overclock this card without game issues and that I have to turn the fan so high. I have a big case with four 120mm fans and a huge heatsink with dual heatsink fans on the CPU that I haven't OCd. The one problematic area could be the fact that my 285 is next to my X-Fi card with only about a 2mm gap between them, even though the 285 vents up where the two cards overlap, and the 285's main fan comes after the end of the audio card.
Anyone else have game issues with the 285? So far I've only seen issues with WAR and Deadspace, but I haven't played Fallout 3 (my other game) long enough to know if that has issues too.
Thanks!
LOL, nonsense. The 285 cooler is very capable of keeping temps under control and the backplate isn't needed because there are no memory modules on the back of the card anymore. A backplate is nothing more than a heat blanket, which isn't good for temps, however it's a necessity when you have memory modules on the back like the 280.
The 285's are already overclocking much higher than the 280's ever did and running cooler doing it. There are no advantages to owning a 280 over a 285 other than price.
lol everybody knows 285 doesn't have memory on the back lol
but fact is that 280 as much better cooler, and 285 overclocks more
when you cool it properly. the transition to 55nm isn't that great i have 2x280
and one 285 and benefits here in europe are that 285 is even cheapier
than 280, i've bought mine for 375€, and 280 for 475€ lol
anyway of re uploading the pictures for this thread
I hate photobucket.. "bandwidth exceeded" :D
Finaly GTX285 what have normal level of thermal grease.
My from Gigabyte had one tube on card :ROTF:
How well does an average gtx280 overclock?
And can you do the voltage tweeks like you can on the gtx280 if you do them on the gtx285?
I want to get one when people switch over to dx11 cards as i can't afford them with straight up cash.
software volt mods are a no go on the 285... 285 just has far better ram clocks... With both cards the Shaders are really the limiting factor... I can get 750/1720/1450 on my 285. My 280 was never modded and I was limited then at 720/1580 Shaders
Thanks.... I think I actually want to get a gtx280 instead of a gtx285 just because I like the software volt mods ^.^ (not 4890... I need nvidia now for a few reasons)
