In the first place, the right thing that should have occurred from the get-go is that none of the testing and none of the data should have been free.
Caveat emptor is the name of the game and its the buyers that outght to place a premium on useful information, and see fit how to spread the info after the info has been paid.
In that way, Martin would have been amply compensated for his reviews and the opportunity cost from his time expended in terms of his wife's home improvement projects, and far more important, his time with his growing children, would at least have been alleviated. However, none of that is my business.
The mantra in XS is that testing is done for the communal good and all that jazz. Its a real honourable goal, but we live, at least I live, in the real world here. All that social good hoopla creates nothing but a culture of parasitic freeloaders. How apt given the political season in the US.
Coming back to my point, Martin should have kept his site fee based form the get go. Now, he has decided that its his intellectual property, and that is his perrogative and certainly honourable. However, I do sense IMO a sudden deviance in terms of underlying philosophy.
If Martin's site was fee-based, no one would appreciate his work. He'd just be another one of those "LOL well you could have found that out on the forums!" sites
If you are talking about his past work, then we will still have that.
If you are talking about him still doing it, he said he doesn't want to.

I can certaintly understand Martin's motivations to retire and I'm grateful for his work to improve the testing methodology and to make people more aware about performance of various components.
The only request I would like to see happen is to share the testing methodology so others can reproduce it if they wanted. If a few people get the same tools and can do the same testing methodology, we can continue gathering the knowledge. I'm personnally looking to buy the same King flowmeter as Martin and I will look at the manometer a bit later for my own personnal knowledge.
Beside this, I will repeat but I wanted to thank you, Martin, for the help about the WC knowledge. This is really appreciated and will be remembered for years to come.
If Martin is interested, I have a server that could be used as a mirror for his info, of course, if he wishes to keep all of it up. Just a zip file with the data and pages needed and I'll gladly host it. no cost to anyone, and it'll simply be there as reference info.
That being said, thanks a million for everything Martin. If it wasn't for your exhaustive testings, spreadsheets, time, effort and cash, I'm sure a lot of people would not know what they really have installed. You'll always be a legend, regardless if the site is mirrored or not. It'll at least live on in our heads and in this forum.
This is something I plan on doing with my site. I want to have a place where testers of all sorts can take and contribute to the testing methodology in use. Think of it as a best practices for WC testers section.Quote:

No one has to like me, and I would venture that most people don't. A few people do for whatever their reasons, and I am very honored/honoured. I have a few friends in XS and I am immensely loyal to them, but I still routinely flogged them in public and in PM when I need to, and that especially includes RRR and Naekuh, whom I have more than a few occassions vehemently disagreed with their opinions and choices.
In my business, there is a common saying. "If you want a friend, get a dog."
As for water cooling testing, I have no such inclinations, absolutely no interest and I don't ever intend to test water cooling equipment. I don't buy the equipment that most people in XS buy anyway, so I wouldn't care. All due respect to Martin, I read his reviews with interest because they were publicly available, but I never followed some of his recommendations anyway. Dittos Nikhsub1 and Mcoffey and MaxxxRacer. Naekuh gets more hell from me than you know. Good guys with good intentions, but when I disagree, I just disagree.
If I were ever to undertake any form of testing, it would be only for myself and my eyes. I would share with my small circle of friends, but even then I would tell them to look elsewhere for definitive answers.
I have no intentions to have fee-based subscription for anything on the internet. I have more than enough responsibilities and headaches away from XS: a lot more than I can handle.
Anyway, my point was that Martin should be consistent with his overall position. If he started his site for communal spirit purposes to share his results with the public, then he shouldn't be invoking intellectual property protections right now and not share his past data with the public.
And the quote about "Hate Propagation" was not from me. It was from RRR. Kindly take note and quote properly. It is immensely bad form to misquote and then use that dumb rolling eye icon. It is unwarranted and debasing. I'm not RRR's alter ego, and its not the same dual-personality schizophrenic individual that is posting.

I think Martin's intent on removing of his data is to promote the users of XS to produce their own and promote learning. I never got the feeling that money was an issue for the server, he could have easily got it if that was the problem.
What we can do from here is work together and collectively to produce more data. Then we can analyze and scrutinize that data to promote useful discussion. I look forward to the next coming months.
