Nice batch of Micron ddr3 in at OCZ

Timings are actually not the best way of looking at the latency, you guys see 8-8-8- and think the performance will be crap, point is this may be at 2000MHZ so you have to look at the actual ns rating at that speed to see what is going on.

I added some info to an article Kris wrote showing latency as different speeds,over here which shows CAS latency and the effect raw speed has on the actual latency its self.

If you look close we are already doing better than i hoped with this Micron DDR3 so infact its actually faster than DDR2 in broad terms.

Timing numbers are just how many clocks are needed for memory chips\controlled to do their job (e.g. write operation or read, or refresh etc.)
So cas 9 at 1000MHz (real freq), = 1000M\9 = 9ns.
For cas 4 at 500MHz (as B6 chips in DDR2) = 8ns
Cas 5 at 500MHz (most of DDR2) = 10ns

So bigger number not always crap, just need work with calc, to tell some kind of truth :)

for those who dont want to acceppt that we will HAVE to live with higher latencies...
how about ddr3 1600 with cas5? :D

but as soon as you start to play with ddr3 you will see that the timings really dont have such a big impact on performance anymore.

I think that timings and working frequency are not sufficient to explain latencies and performance for RAM modules.

You have to look internal architecture of memory chips and the way how they are working. Between DDR2 memory chips and DDR3 memory chips there are a lot of differencies. In DDR3 memory chips there are a lot of new technical features that have improved signalling efficiency, data bus efficiency, commands efficiency and so on that, at the end, improve the general perfomances of memory modules.

the best way to get an idea of the performance is and always will be... benching :D

I did the same as well George.

I had no problem at all matching the numbers produced on the Dominator modules.

I even tried running them all together but I could not reach max speed with them mixed.

Hopefully I can soon share what I am working on.

Those resulst are impressive..BUT
i have to ask it, the performance is it worth paying the price premium over the high end ddr2 sticks from OCZ :confused:

as to whether it's worth it.. DDR3 is improving at a blistering pace just look at the latest DDR3 Micron modules that are doing higher and tighter at lower vdimm that the older batch of DDR3 Microns... that or there's 2 types of Micron DDR3 out there some like high looser CAS8 timings and some that like lower CAS6 timings ?????

At such a pace of change it could be expensive to keep up with DDR3.... but on right board with right settings DDR3 will still beat high end DDR2 in memory bandwidth related stuff in some instances...

Still not sure of what the safe and ceiling limits for vdimm for DDR3 though.. no one really has stated it in certain terms.

Will there be better results with the release of the newer Chipsets? X38 namely.
To me it seems ram is now out pacing CPU's. Will the new 45nm Penryn's match the DDR3 better? Maybe I'm out dated but i thought the idea was to run CPU:RAM @ 1:1 or doesn't it matter these days? Just get the ram as fast as possible, the FSB as fast as possible, and the CPU as fast as possible?

As far as price/performance goes, what would be your choice of platform? DDr3 numbers are awesome, but I'm unsure of the price/performance.
