This thread details EXACTLY why I bought the $250 7900 GTO. I didn't want to drop the full $450 to $500 on the highest end ATI or NV card with DX10 so close. I did, however, want something pretty damn good to run CoD2, FEAR, etc. for the next 6 months while the new cards and games come out.
well, i do not regret dropping the cash for 2 7900gto's. im typing this on a p4 3.0c and a 9800pro. there is always going to be something bigger and better comming out. they are an investment, sure, but if i get tired of these in 6-9 months ill just ebay them.
i do have a PM at 2.4 with an aiwx800xt, but the wife took that for the htpc :slap:
so if you ask yourself " i need to build a pc right now, what am i going to buy?" would it include one of these cards? its a good possibility i bet, because these are a real good deal for a top rate card... imho

these 7900GTO have a very nice price for the performence.
dont forget that the first Dx10 cards will likely be above 500 euro/dollars wich si a good bit more expensive then these cards.
so 220 euro or 250 dollars for a 7900GTO or a X1900XT is a good price for a very good card.
I know a lot of people, me included, that are eyeballing this card and the x1900xt. DX10 isn't going to land in everyone's lap at the same time. I'll be sticking with XP well into the first year of Vista's existance. I can't afford the top of the line tech, so I get second best. This'll be it.

ppl are also 4getting that the ATi cooler is really not that good.
This is one of the best stock coolers. Save another 30 or so bux.
So to go DX10 I will need Vista also?
That means I have to add the price of a new operating system to the price of the DX10 card.
yeah this 7900 GTO would probably be the card I would buy if I needed something more powerful right now. We shall see once I get my 22" widescreen LCD that requires higher resolution.
now the GMA950 can get more marks in the 3Dmark03 test than GF3 Ti500
and play NFS Underground1/2 well ,the GF3 Ti500 cant

even Intel GMA X3000 integrated graphic chip has more features than the G70/G71/R520/R580/R580+ series
It has the DX10 support and the core is 667MHz
Maybe the video chip can only run very simple DX10 games and very slow
How is that video chip , now We dont know
but can you bear the integrated graphic chip has better 3D image quality than you High-End 200W Power Consumption card ??

this card can be OC as high as GeForce 7900GTX (well u can live with RAM @ 800 or 1600, as performance difference between 1400 and 1600 shouldnt be that much), and for $500 u can get GTX SLI (which costs $1300 when 7900GTX came out), i think this is a pretty good buy
now if G80 come out any time this month, i think 7900GTO and X1900XT/X X1950 should potentailly drop $50 to $100
thats what im hoping for , cuz ATI's R600 isnt comin any time soon, and i aint gonna get the first of their "species" the 800 ending ones (ie 8800GTX or X2800XTX). Im thinking of GeForce 8950GX2 or ATI X2950XTX
It's all about buying the best bang for buck cards at present in case you think you're in need of a new card (for all those who haven't got a lot of cash) and I see this as a very attractive card. It has 512MB vidmem, same specs and features as a 7900GTX minus the slower clocked ram clock which can be clocked higher pretty easily. A bonus is that you get the best stock cooling available as of yet. Of course if I already had a good enough gfx card I wouldn't mind waiting for a DX10 card but I was thinking of either buying a X1900XT 256MB or wait and see how a 8800GT turns out. But I'd rather buy a 512MB for now as I would prolly keep this card for at least 1 year or until 2nd gen DX10 cards arrive. 8800 series card seems much too expensive for me and often 1st gen cards are badly optimized and I've really needed a replacement for a long time now for my 6800GT and this card seems like the perfect upgrade in my case.
You can't keep thinking all the time of what cards will arrive, sure I'd rather take a 8600GT now for same price...
This card really stands out imo, hasn't been this great deal for a long time. Maybe 9800 Pro was the last time I saw this kinda price/performance ratio...

u either now buy a 7900GTO or a similiar card for 250 dollars/euro or wait a few months to pay +/- 600 euro/dollar for a G80/R600 wich will (if rumors r true) will also require u to buy a new (expensive) PSU costing some 100 dollars/euro.
so spend 250 now or spend some 700 in a few months.
And seeing no news has been heard about Dx10 mid-end cards its likely that wel have to wait till mid 2007 for a geforce 8600 or Radeon X2600.
Would be smart from ATI/Nvidia if they would also launch a cheap Dx10 card at the time Vista launches simply for OEMs so they can slap a Dx10 ready sticker on the case to sell to the suckers.
You know, there's also a 7600GTS or something like that for everyone on a budget. it's 100 bucks, runs like a 7600GT but slightly underclocked, a 7600GS model + GDDR3 too. A little overclock could get it up to 7600GT speeds. I'm using a 7600GT as a hold over card and it's doing fine. If you guys do want something better, I'd probably say 7900GS if you're willing to fork out 200 bucks since it seems to overclock incredibly well, or if you're committed to getting even higher end, the 7900GTO would probably be the card for you to buy.
