i dont have the money for upgrading every time intel has a strange idea of bringing out a new chipset every 3 months

Please stop saying AM2 is a flop, you are acting as if AM2 is a processor, its merley a socket. I don't recall anyone saying that LGA775 CPUs were a flop compared to 478 CPUs when they offerered the same performence at the same time, AMD is doing what Intel did, Launch a new socket with little to no performence gain upfront, to get people used to the socket, then launch all the CPUs that will increase performence

Yeah, AM2 is not a flop, but maybe A64F is compared to the (soon to be) competition (read C2). Heck, even todays CD is faster.

Cheating or not, C2 is faster.
The K8 is cheating by having the memory controller in the CPU.
The Pentium Pro was cheating with a crazy 1 MB L2 cache.

The PD 900 also have 2 x 2 MB L2 cache (not 4 MB unified though), but no one calls that cheating. I wonder why..... LOL.

Well I think the difference between AM2 and LGA775, was that most Intel users did not want the LGA775. It was absolutely identical to S478 except for the socket itself, no new ram, no new ram controller etc. With the news reports of mobos being damaged (because of pins being on the mobo, not hte cpu) etc. nobody wanted it.

AM2 on the other had, was different. Nobody knew how it would perform, we all had our reasonable assumptions, but we had to wait and see. New memory controller, new socket, new ram. Then along comes Conroe. Mindblowing previews, expectations are running high. So AMD defenders, kept saying wait for AM2. Wait for AM2. Wait for AM2. You know it, I know it, we all read it for the last few weeks/months. So it is these defenders that set the stage for Intel defenders to call AM2 a flop.

We all knew AM2 would not have provided great performance, A64 by my knowledge is NOT bandwidth starved. Yet the defenders used it as a defense anyway.

So is AM2 a flop? Depends. To most intelligent hobbyists, no. We all knew the performance if there was any would be tempered. But to AMD zealots it is a huge flop, since they built up the expectation of AM2 to help defend against Conroe.

AM2 I don't think is a flop. FX-62 may be a flop if compared to Conroe price/performance ratio wise.

I want AMD to do well to keep Intel on its toes (and if they make a faster, cheaper, more stable processor, I will buy one). But I have to admit a little schadenfreude for the mercilous, smug phanboyz who weren't taking the high road when Athlons were on top. AM2 is not a flop but AMD pushing these transisional products out on the market kind of sucks. At least that's what was said each time Intel did. Hell, Even I said they (Intel) sucked for too many transisional Processors and chipsets. I still think the 915 through 955 with 3 different i925 was BS! THe differences are that many Intel users thought it sucked. Many AMD Fans never saw met an AMD FU that was not excused or defended.

They are also too expensive for transisional Products as well.

Gotta wait out two more months.

And, even once finally the excrusiatingly painful long wait is finally over, there is no guarantee it wont be just a paper launch or tight supply. Remember P3 Coppermine. EVERYBODY wantted one. Few got one. Remember the race to 1.0Ghz. Nearly all the big nameretailers were trying to cashin on the 1.0Ghz craze.. but few got any chips from Intel. And if you wanted to get one in a store it was even worse.The supply situation wasn't fixed for over half-year. Similarly, there were massive shortages of chipsets, and to make matters worse that whole RDRAM fiasco, and hundreds of thousands of motherbaords recalled. AFterall, that is how VIA nearly got 50% of the marketshare overnight.

Lets just keep our gruby fingers crossed something like that doesnt repeat.

How can the word "cheating" be used seriously? How is it "cheating" to include something in a microprocessor design? There is nothing stopping AMD sticking 4MB of L2 cache in their next processors, and then Intel sticking 8MB in, and so on.

It's not "cheating", its just design.

Im sure Conroe's kingship wont last more than half year.
Ofcourse Conroe will be a bargain of the year but thing is that in XS we care about the performance of the top end CPUs not about the price.

There's a lot of reseach you need to do Bro! Conore = Kick Ass=P Games are where it really kicked the crap out of anything AMD has until K8G launches and even that is a wait and see deal.

The Frames Per Second to Dollar Ratio also is where the FX anything is being slammed all over the place. Then add to this Heat, Power Draw and still better than AMD platforms and AMD really has a tough road ahead. Their biggest problem is costs and folks running out to by now will be kicking themselves just as they back from July 2000 to Sept when the bottom fell out of the Athlon Market then as well.

As for Kingpin, let's pull the head out of Green Sand for a minute? You're talking about $1000+ processor and how much for the cooling? That's $1,XXX to outgun a Processor that will cost about $520 WHEN IT SHIPPS by July 23rd. Remaining loyal to AMD is one thing, trying to justify doing so is another. Yes Xtreme Systems is about Extremes but Extremely Stupid is not one the Extremes.

The cost of the FX-62 =
$520 Processor
$175 RAM
$200 Motherboard

Now that may have been find when AMD was the champ, now is seems bogus even against Yonah before Conroe launches. Makes FX-62 look real LAME since many AMD owners will have to buy Mobo, DDR2 and the overpriced Processor.
