Who needs DDR3? The 2-3% performance increase just isn't worth all that extra money. I'd rather get 8Gbs of DDR2 1066 for less than a benji :p:

So are AMD going to release any slower speed grades of Shanghai anytime soon?
February. Lower speedgrades are probably <$200USD, but have 4MB of L3 instead of 6MB.
Still, probably neck and neck (or slight win) against the Q8200.
By this pricing, the top Athlon X4 might as well be <$150. Nuts.
p/s If you meant server chips about the same timeframe too. "HE" parts at that.
I wasn't clear, but I meant for the desktop.
I guess it is just as well that with Quads being out for a while now, I would imagine that significantly more people now than was the case a year ago say, would be looking to get a Quad rather than a Dual, when it comes to getting a new system.
Will these Quads help AMD out much in business desktop sales or is that all still very much Dual Core oriented?
Business desktops won't be hot in 09 for either side until we see some change in the economy and companies stop implementing cost-reducing "measures" . I don't think a change is essential in the sense for a lot of desktops for now and the forseeable future.
Personal desktops and such still will sell, though. AMD's old dual/single cores will go to high-end netbooks and such (AMD-SOI 65nm is bad when you push the limit, at lower voltages and clocks it's quite efficient), the new Athlon X4/X3s replace Dell/HP/Acer/w/e desktop offerings that used to have dual-cores.
Personally I think that their margins will go up (Propos should be cheap as chips to manufacture), but volume will decide their balance sheet. Oh well, at least the server division actually has business to conduct now.
As for the Phenom II line, X4 920 might get some coverage if the OEM had an existing AMD platform (eg Alienware's Aurora). Not sure whether AMD's offering the 940 locked for cheaper.
QFT!
One VAR told me Ph2 920 for $250 and $325 for the 940. His words not mine. "Hey Donnie if you want a one or couple, wait and let the Fans jump on them first. These are initial prices and are NOT meant for long term." Yes, the early bird does get the worm, just not where they expected:rofl:
-200$ For Q9650? Well, maybe. The Q6700 dropped like that a few months back.
idk i think for release the pricing here is good. they will drop especially when am3 comes and remember there is still propus, rana and regor which will all be much cheaper too. im interested in seeing what the prices of those chips will be.
its cheaper than intel and clocks and performs about the same, so... i dont think the price is too high.
but if amd really wants to gain some market share back they should drop the prices... but im sure they will after a few weeks :)
Phenom II's are in stock everywhere where i live.
weird thing though, there is a Phenom 920 and 920 BE, with different product codes (HDX and HDZ respectively). I don't recall there being a 920 BE, so it must be an error.
If there will be a 920 BE (which i don't thing though) then it would be perfect for me.. since i'm looking for something around €200 at max.
jep, me too
but i guess its a tray version...
I can't find any place in UK/IE or places that ship to those in the EU that have any Phenom II's in stock :(
In Greece are already out for sale from 24 December .
Price for 940BE starts from 243.15€(Inc.VAT)

and not OEM Insider ...lol
What do you mean, "not in stock"? They just delivered me 2 phII for a friend, we've got containers here...:DQuote:
NOT in stock!
well isn't greece a place of anarchy right now? (j/k ;) ) :p:
So i guess noone cares if they get sued by amd.
In germany/austria P2 is not even listed. :yepp:
Better in anarchy, than in total unawareness....
And i don't think amd is caring about a such small country market(especially about amd's marketshare).
She would have cared though if germany or england sold them tho...
If you're going to pre-order completely blind you're going to pay indeed. Also if you order on terms of the shop (like they've a certain product in stock and sell it a month before release) they'll have a super high price, everyone who orders there's will be known they want to have that thing and they can mess with the price since they dont care if they do or do not sell it in such way.
With a bit of effort yo can get a very decent price after all. My pre-order started at 266, cheapest of all. Then it went upto 280, then it dropped to 247. I mailed them asking to adjust the price and they did. Easy things like that. And Im sure the price will be lower after two months, but if Im going to wait for the cheapest price of everything I'd never be able to buy hardware:p:
