Quite some difference between cards and temps on stock HSF it seems. Mine idles at about 45 degrees (stock volts/bios, amb 20 degrees, 40% fanspeed). Highest temp atitool reports while gaming for hours or looping 3D is 65 degrees. Fan is set to run @ 60% above 60 degrees. It wil do 700/800 on stock volts and bios without a problem. I did not remount the hsf but this might be a good idea for the "hot" cards.
Hmmm...this is very interesting with the Memory clocks...might have to try this out and see what I can get out of it.
well today i installed my 1HP portable air con unit in my room so might change my max cpu and video card clocks and temps so what heheQuote:

Those are amazing clocks maxxpt, but system mem bandiwth is holding you back there. SHould be getting at least 11500 with those clocks. Is that with a divider or 1:1 on your fx?
Perkam
Ok... now I've checked temps while playing and it was 80... put the coller max and temps were 57 :)
Does anyone use RivaTuner?
If so what are your volt readings with stock and XTPE bios?
Im at 1,3V in 2D and 1,4 with stock and 1,48 XTPE in 3D mode.
And what would be the max safe voltage?
hmmm not good, dont lose hope fella, they not all bad...Quote:

I decided to be stupid tonight and flash my XL with an XT bios. I did not use the PE bios floating in this thread. Here were the not so good results.
Upon reboot the screen went black - nothing. I ended up turning the system completely off and rebooting. That worked - system booted into windows and it began displaying that it found new hardware. It did not find acceptable drivers and prompted me for them. I selected to let it find them - it did not. I then re-installed the 5.12 drivers - no luck. Loading ATItool confirmed the bios was different - clocks were now at 600/700 except ATItool did not recognize the card. So, I could not check the voltages. Windows was still using the base VGA driver so things were a little clunky. I did not do any benching because of this.
Under the control panel/system/hardware it showed unkown ? hardware.
I reloaded the bios flashing tool - it said I had an ATI 520 installed. I forced a reflash to my saved XL bios. That worked and a reboot put me back to normal. A little risky - but worth the try.
At least I am back to normal. Not sure what I was thinking. I would have tried to XT PE bios in this thread, but I know the card can't touch 800 mem with those stock volts.
Thanks for trying. Took a lot of balls to do what you did. I know I would have freaked out getting a black screen after a flash. I am glad you got it all working again though.
So you flashed a 256DDR XL card to a 512DDR XTOC Version? That is nuts!! LoL

Not sure what I was thinking (maybe my thought was I could explain it to my wife that my card simply died and that I needed to buy a new XT to replace it). I went in there to simply back up my current bios. I could not resist trying. Funny thing is I held my mouse over the proceed button for a minute - finally said what the hell. Black screen made me sick. Not sure why it did not work. I have a Sapphire card - but it merely has the sticker slapped on it.Quote:

did you use atitool or overclock, to underclock. as overclock won't work for everyone.Quote:

Seems stable though but me on watercooling mcw50 and temp now is 41c, and goes to around 52 or so when benching.
I got finally installed my wc block, so here it is in pics:
Naked card
Naked core
And finally installed
Temps are now 41c idle and 47c while gaming (from ATITool) and clocks are now at the stock clocks.

I actually decided to stretch my luck tonight. I tried 3 different XT bioses. One original, one the PE version, and on XT 256mb version - non of them worked on my XL. All booted fine into windows. The clocks were set to 595/695 or somewhere close to that. It was using the VGA driver as windows could not recognize the card. As with before, a reinstall of the ATI drivers did not do anything.Quote:

thanks again for your effort. If there really is no way this will at least help people to not waste their time trying the same. Hopefully there will be a way however and someone will figure it out.
No need to thank - it was worth the shot. Maybe I was hoping for a miracle or something. Still love my XL though - it is a pretty amazing card with very simple overclocks. My stable 3d05 score is around 9700 - not bad for a $340 investment.Quote:

Very nice score on your XL however as the max I ever got on my XT was 9664 at stock OC speeds of 695/792. My cpu is severely limiting though at 2.48ghz max, 225 on the fsb and only 512k cache.
Yes, that 3200+ would definitly limit your score. My OC score when pushing my X2 to 2700 nets me 10088 which is my posted 3d05 score. That was with the 5.11's. I am getting about 200 more with the 5.12's.
I know what you mean about the card having issues - at least that was my first impression overclocking. It is definitly finicky and requires a little getting used to. No longer that days of quickly finding the upper limits. Having the dynamic ability to change voltages on the fly for both memory and core add a whole new level of complexity. In reality, I can get a good bench at one speed and the next day I cannot hit it! But that is OK, still fun to play with. My stable clock works great. I was considered the XT since I have to build another system for a family member. My LCD only does 1280 so I figured it would be a waste of investment for me.
yea my current LCD only does 1280 as well but I figured I would be able to at least have higher aa/af due to the lower resolution. I am seriously looking into the Dell 2005FPW for after christmas for myself however. A nice widscreen 1650 x 1080 would be sweet for games. One thing I never really looked into however is how much a performance hit you take when going up in resolutions. I never had higher than 1280 before so am unsure if I will need to turn down my aa/af and in game settings to have a better running game at the higher resolutions. I guess we will see when I get the new monitor as perhaps higher resolutions dont impact performance as much as other settings.
The issues I had with my XL were weird. It would run great in most things but some terrible. No artifacts in any of the 3dmarks or aquamark or quake 4 etc but fear had these little black flashing squares on the screen. 3Dmark01 would also crash to desktop. I got annoyed and sold it off realizing that a stock XT is better than most peoples highest oc out of the XL. The XT would be guaranteed at those speeds as well with a much stronger core, not to mention a non failed core like all the first batch of XL's were.
As for my 3200+ believe me, I really do want a new cpu however I am afraid to take apart my system to put a new one in. I had such a nightmare of a build with this DFI board that now that it's running fine I'm leaving it as I have a strong feeling fooling around will have it not boot like when I first got it. It is such a hassle to take apart my case it isn't even funny. A nice opteron 175 would be a nice upgrade though and compliment everything else quite well as storage, sound, dvd burner and video card are all pretty top of the line. My cpu is definately the weakest thing in my system.

http://www.3dxtreme.net/other/ontap/...00XT/3dm05.jpg
Works great here so far!! I dropped to 500 / 500 before the flash.
Ok here are my findings - I was using CCC at 690 / 780. I could not run the memory at 800 stock volts or it would artifact. I was also breaking 10,000 in 3dmark 05, I believe 10,090. - (Nope 9803 with stock bios 690 / 780 - sorry)
So I flashed to this bios, 690 / 800 is stable, 3dmark 05 dropped to 9942 and I can run 800 memory no problem. I believe this bios slackened the memory timings a bit to make it more stable. Thats fine but I dropped slight performance at the higher oc. I prefer this however since it's not a software OC and the fan seems to spin faster than when OC'd in the CCC.
I gained 1 FPS Avg. in Fear however!!
BTW performance in gaming is outstanding!! :)

ok did flash think i need to reinstall drivers ati CCC wont let me into the overdirve part cant use CCC atm. seem to have lost points in 05 will try to re-install drivers then try again...
peace perc,
Riva tuner reports 1.4 core voltage at load with the stock BIOS and 1.48 core voltage with the X1800XT PE bios.
temps are like 3 -5 deg higher. from 68 load to about 71 using the XT PE one.
how did you get rivatuner to work with your x1800xt. it won't work for me. or is there a new beta version.Quote:

*edit*edit* flashed back to org bios ran 05 with same oc to compare scores... have a peek and i think that youl see that the scores are pretty much the same. i think this bios is good for the people who had problems getting 700/800 but my card doesnt have these problems so im going to stick with my stock bios for now.

They are all identical. Right now most cards are being manufactured by Sapphire and just rebranded with different stickers in different boxes. They are all following referenc design and all have same stock cooler design too. The XT core is very strong and 95% can do the same as the next guy if volts and cooling are put properly in place. I have not heard of 1 XT card not fully taking the OC bios happily.
My memory could not do any higher than 780 from CCC with the original bios so Im happy with the new bios.
I flashed back to make sure and it was corrtup within seconds using the original bios and memory at 790.
Im happy at 700 / 800 now, I dont see the need for a few more tenths of a frame.
ya i hear ya, no need to overclock higher than stock OC speeds as it is already plenty fast, even with my cpu being heavily limiting. With a faster cpu the card would be even better at same clocks. As soon as a better cooler comes out I may try higher just to see what I can do as long as temps are reasonable as right now they are quite hot for me.
Flashed sapphire.
775/800 seems maxed out using waterblock mcw50.
760 for daily use.
Low on my cpu though only max 2460mhz for stability.
3800+ x2.
3dmark05 9704p.
3dmark03 17036p.
3dmark01 29868p.
Limited by cpu though.
Good enough however for me at 24/7 use :D
it's better use the additive for water if you use 1A- cooling... It's not a Low profile watercooler, it's use micro - canal in the waterblock.. if you don't careful with this, your cooling-perf can be reduce dramatically. or use Ethanol + anti freeze as liquid.Quote:

Mem Clock? And Voltage Used?
Thanks.
my stock is around 715/840ish with no voltage changes or fan speed adjustments. tested with looping of 3dmark overnight...going beyond this locks up the system.
how are you guys testing for stability?
didnt flash bios either since i can do it w/o the extra voltage...just a bit of a pita to do it after every reboot. cant wait till wizzard figures out atitool.
In real i test the stability of CPU DDR (Prime..) but i don't OC for game. FEAR have no slowdown and wor perfectly with 16xAF with this card, why OC for gaming? So in true, i don't care it's stable when bench, at the moment the test pass...I think it's lik with the 7800GTX ( in SLI or not) the card like high OC in CPU
I'm sorry that I'm not getting half of what you're saying.Quote:

why do you need to overclock the damn x1800xt, its as fast as the 7800gtx (in SLI or not?? -_- ) what he really cares about is the cpu overclock and he tests the cpu OC with prime cuz the video card really likes a high cpu speed
This is correct...alot of people are experiencing a huge bottleneck with there scores due to CPU limitations...
Another successful flash. Sapphire X1800XT.

Does it look like this for you guys who also flashed? The core clock in CCC is unlocked but memory clock is maxed. I wished it was the other way :(

One ask about something, i have no problem for temp. but i have "freeze display"(crash) during 3DMark benches if i OC at more of ~740/830.. i have try increase the voltage, but i don't know well the max possible, Someone know from what come this crash? Not enough voltage? it seems caused by the Card, the CPU and DDR are tested and stable. Is this a know issue and there's a solution?
Need some help peoples, everytime i run the flash utility the screen just goes blank white and i have to reboot to get out of it ??? the program just doesnt start ?? any ideas or am i missing something here ???
Set core & mem to 500/500 before flash.
weird that some people are having this. I flashed my card at 600/700 and never had an issue. I was one of th first to flash right after ugp which was before fugger made the mention of downclocking before a flash.
I had flashed it with stock clocks in 2D when I did mine and it worked fine for me....when I flashed it back I used 500/500 and the same again anytime I flash the BIOS. I trust anything FUGGER says when it comes to that.Quote:

Nothing about the "freeze" (crash in 3Dmark) bug when OC?

Question.
Using the stock BIOS here, ive been using 1.350 Vcore, as 2D voltage in ATI-clocker, does this mean it stays at that for 3d runs? or will it just use 1.4? In other words am i using less volts than leaving it stock, if stok jumps to 1.4V at stock.
If i do same, i have corrupt image directly... so i think it will use only 1.35Quote:

Thanks man, no wonder i was crashng at 730, lol ill leave it at stock, and see what happens!
One thing I'm wondering, if you make changes in CCC to do with setting AA/AF levels, avivo colours etc will these changes on take and stay in place if you have CCC load on startup of windows or will they always be in place even if I choose to not have CCC open ever, especially on windows boot. I have CCC set right now to always open on startup however silently in the background with no taskbar/quicklaunch icon. If CCC only is causing the voltage bump then perhaps not having CCC load may cut down on my temps a bit keeping them below 1.48v in 3D full load.
I have to ask as well, anyone with the OC/PE bios finding stability issues if the voltage does NOT go up to 1.48v during 3D mode or does it still run totally fine at lower volts? Cutting down on heat is a big priority for my hot card however I want to maintain stability as well. It is running just fine as is.
Thanks.
My card with watercooling mcw50 is benchable to 785/800.
If I get temp down a little its benchable up to over 800/800 since the card do produce a lot of heat.
used open doors and lower the temp by 10c and things worked a lot better ;)
Now, I got to figure out a way to get the water cooled better.
Into the think tank then. :D
Get a small dorm style fridge and drill two holes in it and put ypur radiator in it. See if that helps:D

could you post link to 11 beta.
i have flashed my 1800XT with XT PE bios and there is no difference in default clocks, readings with ATi tool. Before and after I have 600 700?
is this normal or is there problem with ati tool?
p.s. found the link http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/172
Yeah yu can find it too, on www.Tweaksrus.com, You can find too the warcat 5.13, i have use the beta4 of this version for bench, the final is based on this "beta4" version. (Tweaksrus Innercircle member/ beta tester)
(For peoples having prob install with a 9600 there's a fix patch on forum.)
For respond to you, the ATI tool allways see only 2Dclock, open your CCC and overdrive and you will see the 3D clock set at
700/800..(PE stock speed 698/792, but the 2Clock is same as the original bios,594/694,... 2Dclock before enter 3D mode)
It's what they have fix in ATI tool you don't need anymore disable the ATI smart & hotkey poller in service for OC, it do it for you, cuting a *.dll when you launch the soft... this made you set voltage and can set the clock speed OC directly, using the soft.
( i have set directly the voltage i need, so i have not verify all, and if the voltage is set right enter the bench.. but like i need more voltage when OC the core and memory... so no prob for me.. )
i have installed 11 version, but there is no change. How do i enable overclocking in CCC? i don't have it or i can't find it!
what are the stock volts on an X1800XT in 3d mode?
i have mine at 1.4v and I fear that it's too high
stock with stock bios, ati tool reading i get 1.275
