lightingcrash... are you really The Founder Of The Folding Team? :). (I did some digging at forums and profiles) There is very much a need to A Homecoming-party :fact: :woot: :toast: :party3:
:welcome: to all new folders... :wtf: Your presence at forums would be also highly welcomed :toast: There is some deserting for time to time...:( :D
Hi, I'm imagining this has probably been asked a million times, so I figure once more won't hurt :)
I'm looking to contribute some of my computing power, and am looking for something that'd make the most use. I see that fah has an smp version. But I'm curious if it supports sse2/3? I recall skimming around and seeing something about how deadlines are assigned with a p4 2.8 with sse2 disabled. Does this mean fah has the optimizations in place for sse2? I was running rosetta, but noticed that it doesn't carry any sse optimizations, although I saw links to such, although they're all seemingly dead links now.
The SMP versions are a slightly different setup, and I think the benchmarks come from an Intel Mac for those - have a little sift through http://forum.folding-community.org/forums.html for more information. I do see the message 'Extra SSE boost OK' when I fire up the clients, but I can't remember if it's plain SSE or SSE2/3. The Rosetta optimisations were regarded by some as a hack/cheat because they altered the points benchmark, but there's plenty already been written on that subject, and it's a BOINC-based project, whereas f@h has it's own clients :)
I hope Folding@home becomes your project, it has its quirks but it's a good project & will work your CPU hard, there are a few ways to run it on a rig like yours, so weigh up the options.
I'm in, too.:toast:
I was really addicted to F@H a few years ago but you know... You grow up and real life kicks you in the arse.
Having a 1950pro just for browsing and reading emails is just plain stupid.:slap:
Tell me... the X19xx vgas are really that great at F@H as I've been reading?
Welcome to F@H :toast:
And yes I might know what are you talking about real life :slapass: but nice to have you back to folding :toast:
I do not know about gpu folding, but can guess the coming R600 (preferably R650) would kick arse (again ;)) with some quad core and SMP-client. That's my plan I had... then I couldn't wait and bought 8800GTS.
Oh well... with only dual core... I'm happy with SMP-client. I believe scientists are too.
just joined console mode folding
I guess I'll join too. I've been doing some personal folding for past year, so it's about time I join a team.
Edit: Finally my first post. :D
:welcome: kaosInc. glad to have you with us :toast:
I use to fold 4 another forum but that place *cough* amd forums *cough* turned into a s***hole  so here I am. Just installed my wireless router and got my ps3:D up and running. Later this year after a upgrade my comp will once again start to fold:rocker:
glad to have you here with us chillman, I'll bet that PS3 will put out some decent numbers
Welcome chillman :D
Right now i will be running 2 machines 24/7, and maybe a third. This is my first time folding so.... lets fold.
Big welcome to all the new Folders!!!! :welcome:
I just downloaded the client and set it up :)
I am running this on my temporary comp, until I build my new gaming machine.
Specs:
E6300, Intel DG965WH, 4gb DDR2 667, 2 Raptor X's in Raid 0, 6600GT/128mb.
:welcome: A101Sugar
Do not forget C2Qs (for SMP-client) when you're choosing new parts ;)
Welcome A101Sugar, not a bad temporary machine there - I look forward to seeing the specs of the permanent machine :D
I am also using a wireless router, but I can't get F@H starting to work. All it does on any of the computers is benchmarking etc, but it does not get past "Attempting to get work packet". I have tested both the console and the graphical version, same problem. Could anyone help me how to set up Folding@home and my router?
First of all... welcome Don Dan.
Secondly: do you've configured your f@h exactly like in the setup guide?
Hi and thanks for your fast reply. I just deleted every rest of F@H and installed the console version again, and configured it according to the post. I will now make a restart and then report again!
I downloaded FaHMon to monitor the clients, but I'm not sure if I typed in the address of the clients correctly, because both clients are marked yellow/ orange. However, my computer is running at a load of 90 % and the taskmanager that two FahCore_78.exe are running.
They would be gray if the address wasn't correct. Yellow is fine in Fahmon, it is yellow half the time for me (not sure why). In Fahmon go to Monitoring > show/hide FAH log so you can see what is going on with the clients. If your CPU is at 90% (I'm guessing in the setup you didn't set it to 100% CPU usage) and the cores are runnng then that sounds like it is running properly :)
:welcome: to the team :toast:
Thank you very much for your help! Finally it works.
Yes, I set it to 90% load. FaHMon shows a progress of 1%, although it's still yellow, so I assume everything is ok.
However, now it changed to green.
I've added the XS team ID to my Folding@home GPU client, getting an average of around 6min 46s per frame with my X1950 GT :D
Glad you got it working Don Dan. Sounds like it is functional to me
stealthbomber, that sounds good! I take it you must be using ATItool or ATT to overclock your card? What speed do you have the core and memory at?
708MHz GPU, 729MHz Mem
Sounds like you've got a nice core then :) mine won't get above about 682MHz without having the random artifact and causing trouble. Though I suppose if I had voltage control I might be able to get higher, unfortunately no voltage support in ATItool 0.26
Not sure about a nice core, just brute force volt/cap mods :D
That card runs gddr3, right? What were your temps? I had a x1950xtx that I oc'd to 702c/927m and would chew up WUs at about 5m45s/frame ~ 830ppd. The gddr4 is the main difference here. I kept core temps around 70c with fan overrides.
Nice OC, stealthbomber
@SparkyJJO, you've used the tool to override the fan settings as well, I presume?
Yeah DDR3, can't clock the memory any higher than 729MHz without artifacts but the core is good for 708MHz (stock is 500 for X1950GT) under load 24/7:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=147846
hello there i read about folding a little while ago but never got involved and seeing as i tend to leave my pc running 24/7 ive decided to put those wasted clock cycles to good use! ive got my qx6700 running f@h console x4 one on each core its my first time so im not sure if its working correctly yet but we'll soon find out :)
Hey there andymg350 :welcome: Glad you decided to put those clock cycles to use
If you have any questions, feel free to give me a holler :)
Hey andymg350, welcome to the team
looks like ive got everything up and running and for the first time ive got my processor running 100% haha quad cores are evil. seems to be taking a while to complete each project like, i started last night and its still going this afternoon, so far each core is 34% 34% 35% and 54% for each project according to fahmon. im not used to this so i dont really know the average time it takes to complete a project does it usually take about a day and a half?
Sounds about right mate, depending on the project. Check out the benchmarks(?) that are available in FAHMon; in there will be some facts & figures about the projects you have running, and the ppd (points per day) on these units. You will quickly find out that some projects yield a better ppd than others, and what kind of figures you should expect on your cores :D
I just installed the SMP beta client on my quad core rig yesterday. All seemed to go well (thanks to the setup advice on this thread) and the first work unit completed this morning, but I keep getting messages that the program "could not transmit unit 01 to Collection server" and is retaining the work in queue.
I'm guessing there is some simple setting that I have configured incorrectly ... any suggestions? Working with dos commands is new territory for me. Note, although I am unable to transmit results I had no problem downloading and beginning a new work unit.
I'm not the configuration and tweaking expert around here, but my intuition is that if you are able to download work fine, but not upload it, then it was probably a transient failure on the server side. you could interrupt your process, tryto try to force a result send, and then restart your client after it's been a while since your last send attempt.Code:fah5 -send all
Thanks, I'll give that a try!
If you mean you cannot upload to main CS (=Collection Server 171.54.65.58) ?... from your fah log you could check where it tries to upload ;)...
...then you could continue to check from this page about condition of the servers. See... main cs is on Reject Mode and it has been already noticed at official forums. But it's weekend.
Just left f@h on, it tries to upload finished wus periodically. When main CS is up again... wus will go through :) Maybe tomorrow...
Welcome to the "fold", Aivas47a! Glad you were able to straighten it out. on the avatar, btw :)
:welcome: and glad you got it figured out
I'm in.
I've seen info about it for a while, so I decided I should probably put these overclocked cores to use.
Hope I can add some cycles to the team.
:welcome: evoic, glad to have you :D
Any questions, feel free to post a message or shoot me a PM or whatever :)
Hey guys, just loaded up the smp client on my xeon 3220 and have my ps3 crunching as well. The xeon is at stock speeds right now till I get the water loop sorted. I do have a quick newbie question, I have 5 boxes that are all similar speeds to an athlon 2000+. Are the boxes 'worth' it to run fah on them or are they more suited for other projects like dimes, rosetta, etc.
The way I see it, anything that is P3 and above is worth putting F@H on :) Actually what you could do with several of those boxes is put both F@H and dimes on, that would help out two projects :D Reason is dimes uses only the occasional clock cycle and a little memory, making it a friendly project to run in tandem with a CPU intensive project.
:welcome:
You've got a nice rig there. However, you'll help you team much more by running the smp client. Right now, it looks like you're running one regular instance of f@h per core, right? I recommend you temporarily stop those 4 instances (use ctrl c for each), and then add the -oneunit flag to each before restarting them. This way each instance will quit upon completion. Then you can install the smp version, which can utilize up to 4 cores...perfect! and much better point production ;)
Thanks for the advice, I just reformatted several of the p3 machines and should have a couple of them folding by the end of next week. Dimes looks interesting as well, I'll play around with it soon as I can get some time set aside.
I have gotten alot of information from this site in the past few months, joining this is the least i can do to repay that debt. :)
Hey there Datektrader! Glad you decided to join up. F@H is definitely a worthy project, you won't even realize it is running most of the time :) Well, aside from a little more heat output, but this is a good thing in the winter :D
hi everybody (i haven't said hi yet)
Hello.
I want to fold on my overclocked 1950XTX and see how that goes. Add some points for the team.
Now I never ran f@h before, so should I just download the GPU client? And what version? (Vista Ult x64)
Also, catalyst control centre wont install on my system for some weird reason. I keep getting application failed errors upon install. Would this be a problem? The graphic driver itself is installed ofcourse (7.8).
Hi guys :toast:
@v0dka, Yes, just download the GPU client and set it up. My sig has install guides to get the most out of the client, in there is one for the GPU console. Console is always best because it doesn't waste resources generating pretty graphics ;)
I assume it will work OK on vista 64, I know it does in 32. If you have problems do let us know and we'll see what solutions we can come up with.
Oh, and don't worry about CCC, it isn't needed.
It looks like it needs one CPU core too. :( IMy intention was to not cut down on WCG.
And does it really take till wednesday october 10 to complete this WU? I thought GPU folding was supposed to be fast?!?
Yes it takes a CPU core unfortunately. Just the way that directX has to talk to the GPU drivers and such.
No it won't take that long to complete, that is just its due date. At 2D clocks each WU will finish in about 13-ish hours. 3D clocks this is down to 11 something, OC'd 3D can be as low as 10 hours depending on the OC. BTW, memory speed doesn't affect it much, it is the core speed that affects it.
Thanks for the information.
So all WU's take relatively long. But is a GPU faster than a CPU?
A GPU work unit is much faster than any of the others out there. 10-12 hours or so vs 24 hours and more for the other clients.
As far as points go, the SMP client on a faster dual core and the quad cores are better. But like if you had a X2 3800 at 2.4GHz for example I'd run the GPU client and a standard CPU client to get the most out of the system. 2.7GHz X2 with 512kb cache is a tradeoff between SMP and GPU+CPU, 2.7 X2 with 1MB cache leans more towards the SMP.
Quad cores (intel or the AMD quad FX or quad K10) should run SMP no doubt.
Remember, SMP client has its own set of WUs, GPU has its own set, and standard CPU has its own set. They all server a purpose, so they are all worthwhile to crunch :)
hi all! :)
After recieving my quad core a few weeks ago, i thought i might aswell use 2 of the cores for a good cause, because i won't be using all 4 anyway all the time!
So i started up 2 instances of F@H, but the problem remains that i'm not certain if it is really working twice as fast as with 1 instance.
The reason i think this is because one of the 2 processes keeps disappearing and reappearing in the task manager and that it uses only 10MB's of memory, while the constantly running one is using 120MB's...
Anyone know if it is doing it's work?
TIA
Hi josty2 :)
Which CPU clients are you using, the console or the GUI client? If you are using the console, did you make sure to have two separate copies on your hard drive (such as C:\FAH1 and C:\FAH2) and set them with separate CPU ID's?
Thanks for the help, i managed to solve it by changing the machine ID for each core. It's running 4 cores now :) I hope to see some results soon
Glad it is working now :toast:
My question is what is your OC on the gpu and what is the host processor? I ran a 1950xtx with a 2.66 celeron and did about 800ppd with the gpu OCd to 702 core/927 mem (make sure to override the fan controls with ATItool). I'd complete 2-3 WUs per day (@330 pts each). I also had my best ppd with driver version 7.2
josty2, are you running the smp client or the standard client?
I just moved from team 33 to team 36362. There is much more usefull information here so my CPU cycles will count for another team now :D
I changed my nick so I'm just a ZERO folding so I need a new quad. Nice excuse to buy hardware :D
715 / 1150
fan control wont be an issue as it's on water.
But the problem is, that I can't force 3d mode because Vista x64 refuses to work with Atitool. I had it running at some point (well sort of), but now it wont even start anymore due to driver signing. It sucks as there's much more headroom above the current OC that I can't reach because I have to run stock volts. :(
Hello guys,
Now folding for xtremesystems.org with a Core 2 duo 2M @ 3 GHz. Probably will be running at least 16 hrs day. Thinking about adding another core 2 quad or core 2 duo 4 meg later.
:welcome:
Bit of a quiet group here but don't let that fool you, we can get a bit loud at times if we get ourselves into a little squabble with another team now and then :D
Great to see more people at the team from the same time zone ;)
:welcome: JVguest :wtf:
I'll be running a Q6600 on an IP35-E, and it should arrive for on tuesday. My army of 2 Core 2 based systems should indeed be sneaking up on some folders here on XS!
Hello !!! I'm wanting to join the ranks if that is ok - on the 3dMark team and figure I'll use my power for good not evil = lol =
I will be running my E6850 @4GHz and E4400 @ 3.2GHz round the clock and may go to the family business and install on machines there and at parents home.
hopefully I can catch up to speed on this topic! do I get the sig just by copying location and filling in the right info or do I get it from the F@H site?
how many machines can one person have under them... just wondering ?
Hi. You can run as many machines as you want although setting up a LAN and router to use them all might be a pain in the ass. Be careful with your 4 GHz machine, that might be too fast to run FAH, or at least the SMP client. Once you get it it all setup you will be generating a lot of points though, that's for sure.
LU0P10 - do I see that you've got a Q6600 machine setup?
It is always OK to join up, we turn nobody away
The sig comes from a few different places, depending on which one you want. AFAIK F@H doesn't have an official stats sig, so I went to folding.extremeoverclocking.com to get mine. If you want, you can copy the image location of my sig, then put it in your sig but just change the user ID in the string from SparkyJJO to yours. Be sure to get the image location, I have the image as a link to the team stats as well.
You can have as many machines on one name as you want. Just put your name and the team number in each one and F@H will take care of keeping them all straight :)
Your system at 4GHz should be fine, as long as it is totally stable. If it is prime stable for a 12 to 24 hour run or so it should be fine, I tested all my overclocks that way and have no trouble. Also be aware that temps can get a little warm too so make sure you are running cool enough
Hey Sir Loin, if I buy you a beer would you join us? :D
how long does it take for your first stats to normally appear?
Wow, I can't remember. It shouldn't take long though. I'd check the fah stats page if I were you. What name are you folding under? I'm sure the boys got you configured correctly, right?
Sparky, I've been folding for years now....and nobody has ever asked me that! LOL Good on ya for trying  but I'll have to save you from an expensive commitment :D
One beer is just enough to piss me off ;)
Yes, first of all... what is your folding name...
...Stanford's stats are updated once in a hour... and then EOC stats, which are based on that, are reloading every three hours. So I'd say on average ~ 3 hours after you uploaded wu to the CS (=collection server).
@JVGuest: The renegade has upgraded... yes, :D ...updated sig to correlate better the real loop order...
The pain in the Sparkys arse is rising :p:
About ocing and SMP-client. I think I had to back up fellow citizen and say JV has a point. Not very nice thing to start folding, with bad luck and unstable wu and beta client and yet few bugs, frustration could be behind the door if not careful  qfix is to save some points of course
Thank you for kind words again
I put the name as TheGoat _Eater
Have you completed any WUs yet? It may take a little bit to show up.
Sorry to hear that :( The smp WUs have tight time constraints, and if they're not met you get zippo. Your rig should finish easily enough even if it isn't folding 24/7. I'd rerun the config and make certain your name and team are correct (they should show up in [ ] when you rerun the config, if not, you're anonymous). Otherwise, exercise a little patience, and you'll show up soon enough.
Hmm weird.
Could I see a screenshot of the -configonly screen with the user name and team number showing? (hit enter for the first couple questions then take a screenshot). Thanks.
went back to the GUI client and all is good! :)
Whats the largest size the FAH directory can get? I was gonna put it on a few USB flash drives, and figured it would probably have no problem fitting on a cheap 128mb one, but thought I'd make sure. I know the advanced WUs can get over 20mb upload, but thats at the end, not while being worked on.
That upload was probably a SMP WU, I've seen some large ones of those. That was awhile ago though, I think maybe the current SMP units are smaller uploads, but I don't remember  Having fast internet is great, upload size does not matter :D Unfortunately when I'm home I'll have to pay attention to upload size again :(
i'm in too! :D
just a a64-3200 for now, but soon a fx55, and a p4-1.6 @2.5 as soon as i get a new router
Great to have you here with us best 486  What makes it best BTW, is it like the fastest one around? :D
naw man, it had to do with doing the best with what you had, I started building computers back around when p2's just came out, so i got a bunch of 486 parts free and was making he best out of them, this was when I was ~6 years old, my dad taught me all i knew back then, and he's a car mechanic, so when he couldn't figure something out that I didn't know we would look through the library for books, then 3-4 years later I found [h], thought it was a good name, so I used it, but now people probably think it's because i think i'm better than everyone, but that is far from the case
