I'm looking for a new Cpu/Mobo combo....It's either this Dothan or an FX-55.....I obviously know the dothan isn't as good...but it's almost as good, for less...would I be dumb to buy this over the FX if i game? I would be putting a 6800GT clocked past ultra speeds and 2 sticks of 512 pc3000 BH-5 into the mobo....
You should go for the dothan. It'l end up being way cheaper than an FX55 and from what I've seen it's going to be a lot faster, as long as you can run your memory 210mhz+ with the 3:5 (fsb:mem) divider on the dfi.Quote:

Looking good.. I thought that the dothan was severly crippled with memory bandwidth? 3100mbps isint too bad.

but this is with 'all-out-tweaked' Win2k. with normal WinXP installation its around 30400 or so.
3D2001 is not the test for Dothan. It does really low in Drago and Nature tests for some reason (lack of bandwidth and/or AGP4X?). But rocks in Car low and Lobby tests :D
3D03 is about the same as w/ FX if not better. Does also very well in 3D05 and Doom3.
Quickie first run w/ AOpen board and 1.7G dothan, alpha pal8942+80mm papst NGML cooling (normal room temp).

[poor time cos of lowish RAM speed - also very messed up OS (originally used w/ ATI RS480 A64 stuff)].
w/ 16x multi the board seems to max out already at 166. Need to up the Vagp/chipset voltage and improve chipset cooling I think.
not so bad , but a winnie can do better , of course it's not the same bandwith. It will be interresting to see if bandwith is really important on these chip.

/edit hm let's just say it IS patched :) - the * now marks patched results in general.
what we would need would be runs at comparable overall speeds and matching memclocks. this should somewhat narrow the spectrum that charlie mentioned earlier.
if you think multiple tables aren't necessary because they contain redundant data, just tell me which one(s) to remove.

I'm a little unhappy with my 2Ghz dothan :(
he manages max. 2300Mhz @ default Vcore but i had hope he goes higher.
It is possible to increase the vcore without mods? I hoped DFI release a new Bios where i can increase the Vcore, it is possible?

nope just mods can do that. 2.3ghz on stock is still pretty good tho. I'm trying to remember if there is some pin mod or if you can only do a mod like has been posted...with the circuit board, etc

Here is some SuperPI action at 2950MHz. I still dont haven´t done that vid mod, so currently I can feed 1.447V max to cpu. It took 1.427V to get up to 2984MHz, so there should be still some headroom left ;)

by Thermaltake Tower112 with Delta 90mm.
Maro is my pretty dog, now she lives in heaven, and also the name of
memory occupying program. Its purpose is same as MAXMEM tweaking,
but MAXMEM is dominant in my case, so...Maro is my talisman:)

I think that most FX can run @2.8GHz with stock HSF.
With good HSF and 10~20C degree air, it can run over 2.9G in my case.

Now you looks noticed it, recently I added Normal/SSE2/SSE3 identification
on SuperPI at binary level...yes, "belive or not" depends on you.
And when I use those patches, I say "I used the patch".
Basicaly, I think those patches are heteful, though it's intereting technically.

The AOpen board seems to take OCing w/ extra devices (audigy, sata controller, sata drives etc) a lot better than the DFI and so far I haven't had any need to increase AGP/PCI bus speed when past 133. Seems that the AGP/PCI lock at 66/33 is indeed working even thou SetFSB is showing AGP/PCI speeds of nearly 100/50 at 146FSB. My SATA drives would never run such high PCI clock - also very unlikely that X800 runs much past 80MHz AGP.
I have been watching this scene for some time now. I'm bout ready to plunge with a full setup (Dothan 2.1 + mobo + best mem for the job). These pieces will go into a backpack machine I'm building. It most likely has no overclocking options. Mini-ITX boards rarely do.
Commell has manufactured a mini-ITX P-M board for quite a while. They've just been super expensive.
I was worried that would happen. But hey its nice to confirm...o'well. wonder when an ATX P-M board will show up..

Thats the highest FPS I've ever seen with my aircooled rigs (that includes 3.4EE, Winny 3500, FX55) - and its the first boot up w/ this CPU ;)
edit: couldn't help myself and ran it again w/ 19x multi and higher RAM speed:
110.5FPS
makes me want one sooooooooo bad :( but it cost alot.

hm another thing i heard. people are experiencing problems with xp sp2 and the aopen board.. no matter what you set for vcore, multi, ... in bios is lost on boot. once you are in windows everything is back to default. sp2 is said to have a new intel processor driver included that you need to uninstall and replace with the default driver to be able to use changed biossettings in windows.

Is it true that Intel will be killing off the line in the next year or two and will aim to have multi-cored dothan based desktop chips on their roadmap?? I swear I read something on this a few months ago but all of this multi-chip P4 talk has got me confused.
It makes sense because the dothan's are sooo much more efficient. I've got a 1.7 pentium-m (the one before dothan) in my laptop and it rocks - haven't attempted ocing it yet though - I was happy with it as it was up until now!!

I don't think they setup the A64 systems worth crap. They must be running 2T b/c memory bandwidth should be alot higher, which would then definately skew bench numbers down :(Quote:

I went up to 166 FSB 3:4 and @ 3:5 I have had the DDR booster up to 3.6v w/ the VX 150FSB (DDR500) trying to push it.

Unlike the 12/06 BIOS, the latest one enables automatic and correct detection of 533 FSB in both BIOS and on the POST screen. By keeping J3 “ON” (default), the system will automatically detect the CPU clock (100 or 133 MHz) without the need to manipulate other BIOS settings.
It’s an important break through for us, and we are excited about being the only manufacturer offering this support! This latest BIOS is being validated and will be shipping BIOS in a week or so.

Also keep in mind that Dothan is running with AGP 4X way less than half the bandwidth and yes, LESS MHz than the FX-55 and wayyyyyy less than the P4. It also sells for less than half the other two, what else is there to compare for games? This is at 2.53 533MHz FSB or about the same as a NW-B. I was just as impressed seeing the stock results.
Dewd, these little tiny coolers, 25W power draw under load (so they say), low latency, smart core and this thing rocks. Now it took me a while to get on the Dothan wagon but hey, I'm there. Just by costs alone, even if the Dothan was slightly slower, it makes it a much better deal than A64-FX or P4EE, as well as any processor from AMD or Intel that cost more than $400 or slower ones that cost more than $250. Why? They'd get blown away anyway.
Now, were these the absolute best scores for the Athlon64 FX-55? Maybe not, but were they they that far off?

So you find a better video card than the X800 Pro used and 1024 X 768 is a setting folks do use. Sure we know the value of removing the the Video card from the Equation but those are the only tests that shoulg be done.Quote:

I posted some measurements in this thread a few pages back, 41mm between bolt holes and 6.6mm clearance from the closes cap.
That's really like 0 to 4% but that's nit picking! The point was, the bandwidth, memory and processor wise is less than half, even if the A64 system wasn't optimal.Quote:

Hi I'm going to get the DFi motherboard and a 1.6ghz Dothan but i'm not sure what memory to get. I saw some Mushkin 333mhz ddr memory at newegg with some really nice timings (2.2.2). Any ideas ? Whats working well for you guys with your dothans ? Oh yeah I allmost forgot will a SwiftTech mcx159 work on the DFi mobo ?

I'm just debating the differences between mem sticks.
If these chips top out at 175-180, that's like 240ish OR 300ish...depending on divider.
So here's the question, will BH5 at 240, 2-2-2-5 be faster than 300, 2.5-3-3-7.....
My BH-5 will do 260 and my tccd will do 310.
These things are starved for mem b/w, maybe the big Mem MHZ will help.
I have 2 CPU's coming (one on Fri. and one on Monday) then I'll finally have a chance to play with it!

Has anyone actually tested upward dividers' efficiency? It doesnt make much sense to me at all. The fsb is the speed the cpu talks with the northbridge, thus with the memory, so running your memory at higher frequency than the fsb shouldnt be miraculous.

As said - It has a quadpumped front side bus wich gives it the abillity to transfer 4 bits per clock, so it practically runs 100MHz but is 400MHz effective. The bandwidth of this bus is 3200MB/s (64bit/8 x 4x100MHz). The DDR memory is double data rate (transfer 2 bits per clock cycle) and operates at speeds up to DDR600 today (some got better results) and here the memory would transfer 4800MB/s in single channel (64bit) and 9600MB/s in dual channel (128bit). The boards for Dothan uses single channel so not even the fastest DDR memory can feed a Dothan with the FSB overclocked to 166MHz (667QDR/5300MB/s) enough bandwidth...Quote:
