If I'm not mistaken, Methane has a critical point of -82.7c, so it must be below this temperature to condense.
But even at that temperature it would still need to be at nearly 500psi to condense.
I'm Thinking that the HX for the third stage would have to be at about -125C in order for the pressures of the methane to be safe.

Probably argon/methane system is complete but I need to configure an evap for the two refrigerants as well as a phase seperator/condenser. I may have collapsed by plate HX with the discharge pressure when I tested it. (600 psig) we shall see... I have a three cascades to complete first.Quote:

I am bailing on passive oil seperators and going with heilical seperatores Henery S-5180 I will use 1 on second and two on third stage with a back flow trap after the last seperator.Quote:

what about blending the ethylene with the methane to lower the head pressure?

actually the methane and ethlyene mix may or may not decrease the condensing temperature of the methane it depends on how the blend works, Now if you have an autocascading condenser then that is another story.

i dunno, wouldn't argon be another good gas for this stage?, i mean it has a much lower boiling point than methane ( and prob much higher pressure) but if u could blend it with some really low gas(chilly 1, u said maybe it would be around 513 psi?) i dunno, thats lower than wat pc ice said of methane,

The compressors max pressure at bypass is 500 psi.
Won't that damage the compressor?
I remember runmc's Cascade went to almost 500psi with the ethylene when he started the second stage with his HX at 0C which opened the bypass in his compressor.
luckly, It caused no permanent damage (To the compressor, His heart rate went up cosiderably for a moment!LOL!)
Are you going to get a chance to test a ethylene/methane blend or try with argon/methane?

Do some 410A on a 110F+ roof... you'll see some 450psig+ pressures.
You haven't been to Las Vegas. R410 on a hot roof ambient 112 roof temp 138 discharge temp of teh R410 system 168F We have had some burst pipes in condensers. 600 psi plus and these systems keep on plugging.
The third stage is charged with 50/50 argon methane.
Only condensor tubing bursting we see around here is when the high pressure control was jumped out by some bone brain. Because he couldn't tell that the Valve was starving and over charged the system.
Oh ya we've got alot of those kinda guys up here.

What compressors do you use chilly ?
I have a number of compressors I use, Danfoss sc12mlx, I also have some tecumseh aea2411 axa and aea4440 as well as the larger awa2490 , I also have sonr Hupp 1/4 hp four cylinder rotary vane compressors (No noise at all well below 30 db) I have six embrack emi55her I am going to try in cascade. and a fer comeland cr0500 and cr1000 med temp compressors to use, I have a couple 60,000 btu (5 hp) scroll compressors (460V) that will go into a future project, I have six 1/3 hp emerson low temp r134a compressors for single stage systems, I also have a few 1/5 hp americold for either GPU or CPU use for -40 to -50 systems.
That is what i have on hand.
What I have used.
I have worked on Bitzer screw compressors for wharhouse cooling, a schnackie twin 100 hp for an apple barn a few carlyles for this also, A vilter single screw for a processing plant some carlyle compound compressors for R22 low temp, A few braun compressores for sulfer dioxide systems and methalene chloride systems, I have also worked on lithium bromide absorbers, and I have worked on Frich 350 ton ammonia screws (125 sqft freezer @ -20F) total of 1350 tons in motorroom.
What kind of compressor do I use? all of them and application has a lot to do with it

Well I have a danfoss sc12mlx that I used for a temporary recovery for some R410 and it was pumping into an iced recovery tank (For r410 at 825 psig and was drawing 12.3 A @115V they are rated at 9.?? fla so this one seemed to be able to do alot more. My next big thing will be putting these on a programmable variable frequency drive and running the freq. Up to 100 hz and see how many rev's I can push them to. Actually overclocking my refrigeration. Then I will connect it to the prommie and see if it too can be OC'd

I don't have the recourses to build my own design compressor "yet" specifically for computer cooling and cascade but I have a few designs that would work. Lighter/smaller and more powerful.
When i was asking what compressors do you use i meant "what compressors are used in your 3 stage cascade" ;) (the one you were talking about)
I have an aspera medium temp 3/4 hp for the first stage and the 2 danfoss sc12mlx fo rhte next two.

Now its up here I blew three compressors on this project so I shelved it in search of a few more parts I dont have them yse and also need a few more tools to make this work well at 200 watt load. almost got there though had it to almost 170C Only long enough to wipe just 1 more compressor.

Actually we ran into oiling issues witht eh R14 so this is currently running R1150 on the last stage, I will update it as soon as I get a viable solution to the third stage gas.. I am building another now
