totally agreed..
this is a thing i always wanted to know... do you guys think the special versions like MSI HAWK and ASUS MARS have hand-picked GPUs? or just normal GPUs?
Printable View
If you read the news thread on the MSI Hawk, you will see that we think that they have better quality PCBs and cooling, however the GPUs are not cherry picked. Review samples are cherry picked, the ones that are released to the public are jut normal binned ones with the same random luck for overclocking.
So I dont think its worth buying the Hawk over the Cyclone (£40 price difference), also that I Game version would make a much better buy as it is guaranteed to run at 900 Mhz, and possibly even 5000 Mhz ram, but its only being released in Asia.
My card is pure :banana::banana::banana:. It barely does 820mhz stable, and for that I need 1.062v. I tried diong 825mhz today, even with a voltage bump to 1.075 and it still locks up. I truly have the worst GTX 460 out of the hundreds I have read about all over the net. Extremely disappointed.
No ,got some artifacts after some tests.
This looks stable, check out the load temp!
Yups.....

Ive seen 58c here with a simple meter just hanging next to it.
got another hawk...I'd say save your money and get a reference one. Second piece of shit I've had the insurmountable displeasure in using.
*edit* Great! The card just imploded around the VRM's with only +70mv. STAY AWAY...VERY VERY FAR AWAY from these sad things.
Lol I'm on my 3rd set of cards now :/ .. First had the gigabytes then evga oced versions and now i have the msi cyclones coming in :) .. Gigabytes were awesome ! Just no full cover waterblocks for them ... Evgas? I'm not impressed with at all .. Msi? Well , I'm gonna find out shortly and plus I can put on full cover water blocks on them . Will have a vantage score this week sometime with the msi in sli mode on air ..
im going for the cyclones a simple design maybe not the greatest OC of all, but at 850 core will do the job in SLI an as open cards they are you can put a fan near and thats it or even put some enzotech ramsinks over the vrm zone
talking to a friend thats an Electronic Ing he said that prolly the vrm are soldered over a copper flat surface over the PCB to disipate as if you zoom that zone you can see something under the chips, i think just the problem becomes on going over 1.1+
cheers all
Sergio
not taking hte card apart so I can rma/get refunded.
Hey guys anyone tested the 2GB version of the Palit GTX460 ?

reviews of newegg complain on heat, maybe the added 1GB of extra mem ?

VRM Cooling
I am loving this Galaxy GC Ed.
2300Mhz on memory :D
Still no sign of any instability. Core is at its limit though thanks to core voltage limitation ( bios mod does not stick on these cards thanks to dual bios :( )

Unsolder one of the BIOS chips :D Card will be forced to only use one then. Just make sure you can resolder the BIOS chip if the card starts getting moody.
Woohoo, over 20k finally. This speed gets a zillion errors on occt but I can bench anything all day long.
little more.
still on stock cooling.

nice clocks you guys
Funky really impressive mem clocks!!! Ill try my cyclone how much goin....
Pimped out the VRM's with the Enzotech Ramsinks Sergio suggested, will do the other card tomorrow. The second row was a little wide to fit so it required some snipping but turned out pretty good.

Stock cooling, stock voltage limits. Got it upto 925/2340. I am freezing cold thanks to full blast of Air conditioning. That's it for today :P

And here is last run just before I hit the sack tonight.
This is on the absolute limit without the bios mod and on stock cooling. But I am mostly retiring this card as I have GTX 480 coming in few days. One more session tomorrow and I will be done with this gem of a card.

I did some benchs in my free time last month.
My gainward have good memory. I'm waiting for some fresh days to push the core and my cpu further. I've already flashed my 460 with a modded bios :D

And a Rampage 3 formula ...
Some big fun ahead ! :)
What do you guys think the best fan speed is in terms of noise vs cooling?
Im pissed by herd of elephants... Today was the supossed day that my importer will finally get my vga, but I don't know why in the hell of this world he hasn't got it and he think that it will arrive next week...
Im getting really mad about this freaking and stupid situation, using an old 7950GT wich is really slow even for gaming at low res with low settings.
Grr, if I only know how they buy to newegg the things I will manage the things for my own... Anyone know that?
Beside, great OC numbers!
1.150mV~ on Reference Board is SAFE to 24/7 ? ( Under 75c Load )
Who knows? Not many have blown their cards yet.
I would say the GPU is safe as the temps are ok, however i would be most concerned for the vreg/mosfets. As the voltage goes up so does the current draw, and heat on them. Just make sure u have some heatsinks on them, and good airflow.
+1
If you dont have heatSink on the Vreg, i recommand to add some if your running "high" volts.
Thats why i got a DirectCU, these have stock VRM sink. Even my incomming GTS450 have heatsink on the Vreg.
The 24/7 clocks for my three GTX460s. I can run furmark @ 980 core on all three but they always fail when doing F@H.
http://hostthenpost.org/uploads/31c3...4f022b520f.jpg
Woha lowfat, how do you manage to get those temps with that OC? Really amazing numbers!
Beside, isn't a GTX460 too much for Physx? :p:

MY COMPUTER WITH WATER COOLER MY VIDEO CARD CYCLONE1GBOC IS STABLE WITH CLOCK Vcore 950 1087.
For anyone using the Palit gtx460's, today I flashed to the latest bios from Palit and it fixed the issues with 260.63 Forceware, no more freezing or weird screen colors. Also FPS in BC2 are much better, at 1080res 8xAA 16xAF max settings I am getting anywhere from 92-105 fps most of the game, saw 80's once in one map but only in a couple spots and very briefly, 130's-150'smax in other spots in the map.
Thanks Kimo for the tip.
Hey OC Nub, thanks for the news. I couldn't find the bios you are saying..is it compatible with sonic platinum version as well? Could you link it?
here mate
http://www.palit.biz/main/faq_show.p...ate=vga&id=161
Maybe I'm being blind but was there a change log for the newer Palit bios?
is it compatible with Gainward GS ?
and voltage, its the same, 1.087V max?
Any running a msi 460 hawk card having issues running sli with another type 460?
i only been on sli for 7yrs or so but....
my palit card with either a palit sp bios or an evga bios dont play nice with the hawk?
Hmmm i should RMA my cyclones and pick up the Palis lol, but i wonder if newegg would allow it? This would be my 3rd RMA within like a month lol..
I'm sorry if I missed it/them, but has anyone gotten a 1GHz or more clock on the GPU? I hear the MSI Hawk is supposed to be able to do that on air, and the EVGA FTW seems like a contender, too.
i dont think anyone can do it stable on AIR or even Water.. But dont quote me as i might be mistaken...
1ghz is surely possible in water, even more like 1050 1060, theres pics on this topic proving the stability.
in LN2 seems that the wall is around 1.2ghz, but i aint sure.
in air, i think even with those superpower-cards like HAWK 1ghz is kinda hard to reach and a bit unsafe.. i don't know, it may be possible with a feel of them but is not guaranteed at all..
i would say that, over 80% of all GTX460s can get stable at @950 with air, but it's just a theory (my theory). Viewing from this point, 950 is not to far from 1ghz so..
+1, weird how people define "stable"...
For me, it's an hour of furmark, a day of benching, and a week of gaming
I would agree - given that you refer to nV cards only :)
Mine can do 930 @ 1.1v very stable on water ~43c, I havent tried any over yet.
Crazy- hehe it's just a thought but when I get my rig backup I will need you to hook me up with a bios :)
Now as far as stable , everyone has their own idea of stable but , I perfer to use program that hammer an push my cards .. When I bench with vantage I do it 3 times in a row , if I see the smallest artifact or tear I will consider it NOT stable . I fold at home as well considerig my comp is OCed 24/7 and on 24/7 .. I will also use a few other program to really heatup my cards and let them get hammered for a good hour min while maintaining effecient temps .
it depends on WHY you are stressing it, and what's your objective..
i like to call stable when i can play for hours like 4~5~6 without any problems or artifacts.. that's what i call stable, i really dont give a shi* about furmark/occt gpu/kombustor/etc..
sometimes i use the stress-programs but for 5 mins at top just to check the temps quickly, not an hour or 1 day... only because it's not stable on them doesn't mean that isn't stable on games too. you guys have to agree with me that any kinda of game is definitely less "heavy" than these stress programs.. so why not use a game that is the closest of 100% gpubound to test the overclock? i know this older way, takes more time, surely u will get more bsods, so what? At least you won't be hurting your vga.
some guys "play" furmark .. they have the furmark icon ready on their desktop ..im not saying you or you do it, but surely some do. the super stress abuses the card too much (it was made to do it), gpu and all components do suffer a lot when the stress is rolling mainly without pauses, it's like you contributing to kill your own vga minute by minute..
again, and just to let clear, that's MY point of view.
They tweeked the performance profiles, or clock domains if you will.
There are four levels labled 3(2d) 7(?) 12(3d idle), and 15(3d max).
On the old bios 12(3d idle) was missing (or all clocks set to 0), so Im guessing the when the driver tried to put the card in 3d idle, it actually caused an error, then it would jump back to 15(3d max)?
Just got a EVGA GTX460 768mb.....at 930/1840/2060 right now using 1.087 voltage.
Thats strange, i couldnt get 930 on my 1gb evga oc edition, i got too many artifacts in vantage
I may have just gotten lucky....some chips OC better then others. I wonder if there is any difference in overclockability between the 1gb and 768mb versions?
edit: Think my core is as high as it will go (940 gave me a openGL crash on kombustor). I don't think the memory is maxed out yet though.
I think the 768 version does OC better.. What did you use for stability at that OC if you dont mind me asking?
Vantage, no errors or artifacts. Did you bump your memory OC down some when trying for 930 on the core? I thought my core was the problem when it was actually the memory clock. So I bumped down the memory some and was able to get it stable at 930. I also made a custom fan setting through Afterburner so the fan ramps up faster then the stock, not sure if that made a difference or not.
Nah i never tried bumping the mem down but i do know the 768 oces a bit better... So when you ran vantage tho, you ran it on performance setting and while it was runnig you didnt see any lights break thru at the top of your screen? no green or red or yellow pixels come thr u?
Yes, I run the performance setting, no artifacts or lights breaking though at the top of the screen. I just tried 940 and got a driver crash during Vantage. But 930 runs no problem.
edit: I've tried everything I can to try to get it to artifact or crash at 930 but its rock stable during vantage, furmark/kombustor and games.
Are those square size sinks? I have some sinks that look exactly like those from back in the 7900GT silver paint volt mod days. Except mine are square and your looks like rectangle (or is that just the angle the photo was taken?). What did you attach them with? I just found my sinks and they still have the original white sticky glue sorta stuff on them.
I am very interested in using the sinks since they are sitting in my supplies box gathering dust and I wanna put them to good use.
i think those are the enzotech or swiftech heatsinks for the vrms
Right, I'm pretty sure I have the same ones as they were popular years ago to also cool the VRMs. I wanted to just confirm they are square shaped like mine are (the angle of the photo makes them look rectangular) and what he attached to them the VRMs with (mine have a white sticky bottom). I bought them back in teh 7900GT volt mod days on this forum, so long ago LOL>
